They didn't lose their punk side.Punk isn't something you magically lose when you "grow up", look at Milo Aukerman and Greg Graffin, punk as fuck. I really do appreciate a band I can listen to all the time, no matter what is going on or how I feel. Whether I am pissed as hell and want to slaughter everyone or I want something soft to listen to before I go to sleep. AFI has me covered no matter what, and for that I will love them always.
AFI is the first band I've actually been a true fan of. I can look up at them and say 'I want to be like them when I get older' and not be ashamed or laugh at myself for feeling silly. Been a fan of the AFI since around 1996. I remember going to a show of theres at The Galaxy Club in Dallas around 1999 and loosing my glasses. I was in the front row recording the show with my 8mm camcorder and my glasses fell off and thought they were crushed so I never looked for them(alot of people cramming and there was a pit too). About two songs later a guy started yelling "I lost my shoe"and Davey said"I don't have a shoe up here but I have a pair of glasses." I got them back unharmed!!

AFI does what most bands with a loyal following do, record what they want and let their fans decide, the mark of artists, not performers.

@josegarcia87 Exactly how do you expect fully grown adults to keep their deep punk roots? They were young, bands play music THEY like. Tastes change. They dont enjoy screaming into the mic, and thrashing out as much as they used to. That comes with age.
Not saying that they dont still enjoy it... I'm 21 now, that doesnt mean I dont enjoy a big bowl of Captain Crunch every now and then...but I learned to cook eggs. I'm over cereal.

That's also the reason I don't like ACDC that much, either.

If the most the goths can manage are a bunch of pretentious self-proclaimed music experts who overuse phrases like "sell out" and "boy band," and can't spell simple words like "sure," I'm sure AFI is not missing out on much. I'd rather have a band take a direction I don't like than have them rewrite the same song ad nauseum. They're trying new things instead of sticking to the same formulas over and over.

Wow, you people...you need to get over yourselves. Maybe i can clear up everything for you, considering i'm good friends withthe band. AFI cannot be classified as one genre. No, they are not punk and have not been since the 2nd album. They've always been different from one album to the next and will continue to be. There is A LOT of emotion in their music, yes. Dave is a very sentimental and emotional man. This does not mean they are an "emo" band. Hope that helps.
