Revealed that 45 percent of parking visits were unpaid.... sounds like an excuse for them to give more tickets/make people pay for parking... its just so the city can profit... fuckin' fatcats tryin' to find ways to squeeze every dollar they can out of us.
Police won't be happy about it since they generate revenue from meters. In NYC (meter)~cops have specific number of ticket to give per day now this method will make their job harder ;D
It would make their job easyier. Just because they have a number to reach doesnt make it hard. With this system they can go stright to cars that have over stayed and not paid, meaning that their could be even more fines, as people still wont want to pay, and will try to get away with it. If the system says a cars about to run out of time, the cops can go to it and fine them the moment it runs out.
@fotoventure - more likely they know the batteries' approximate life, or the thing tells the system the battery is low, and someone goes out and replaces the whole unit. A lot quicker and cheaper.
so let me get this straight,i can have two bottles of wine, and drive home with this contraption. I wonder will it pick up hookers for me too?or maybe score me some pot?
yeah there are some upside ideas... and also some bad... right now i dont know which outweighs the other, like its not gonna make MORE parking spaces available... and technology has a weakness and in its early stages alot of bugs
Not going to work. By the time you get there, someone else will park there....and your "reserved" spot will be blocked by some UPS truck or a long frame GM truck or even worse - by someone else's vehicle. The concept is interesting but it isn't going to work. Restaurants will lose business just because customers without parking reservation won't be able to park. Ridiculous.
With this type of technology, we could calibrate all VCR's all over the world at once, we could blend all fruit DNA into one, definitive fruit, we could build highway lanes 20% wider and in more appealing colors. The future is here, finally.
interesting concept, but i wasnt so stoked when the guy said you can tick around for the second bottle of wine and just add money to the meter... your suggesting finishing another bottle of wine then driving home? oh but dont worry at least your meter didnt run out..... how about the sensor picks up your drunkness and locks you out of your car.. now were thining!
That's right, suggest drinking 2 bottles of wine then drive home later!
Not a bad idea about the parking meters though. But this probably enables the bylaw officer to digitally see who hasn't paid. Which means the city makes more money. Not that it's a bad thing, but sounds quite sneaky.
It would also be good as the ticket people could see that a space was taken but the ticket meter not in session so the person was parking there illegally without paying.
cool idea. Except it's true. We need people to get tickets, where do you think city money comes from? :p that's why cops have a quote for the amount of tickets they need to give out/month.
...hmm good idea, but I realized after watching this that it would also immediately allow police to see which occupied spots are expired or unpaid.
They gave that away when they said "it allowed the city to see 45% of parking sessions went unpaid."
I'm not for this idea just for that reason. I think most of the time people should pay, but there are time in my city when I need to do something quickly and don't feel it's justified to pay 50 cents or a dollar to park quickly.
I understand your view but I'm not too sympathetic. My only gripe with this device is that it heightens gov't surveillance. If it doubles as a crime deterrent, then I wouldn't be so defensive. But it relates to your point, it does give authorities the edge to penalize drivers for insignificant errors.
Now as I see it, I agree with you. The law is mistaken.
Great idea, but do you really think the local government is going to support a device that reminds you to put money in the meter? They WANT to give you a ticket, that's how they make their money. They don't care about efficiency.
it should be more smart with the pricing to, newer citys dont need things like this because of the arrangement. seriuosly we are going to need larger scale changes in the future when it comes to simple things like this and more.
why not just have free parking? god damn capitalist society -_-

Wouldn't this just turn into a mad dash for either the informed parking enforcement or the informed driver to get to their cars?
That statistic mid-way through showing that the city found that 45% of parking was unpaid.....THAT'S the real reason for this tech.
Do you think a city would pay more money for technology to LOWER it's income from traffic violations?
The drivers can wirelessly send payment, but depending on the amount of that payment, most I'm sure would run to their car!

The town would still make a huge sum of money from increased payments.
And just think, now Cops too could know which parking spaces are unpaid.
