I can tell this was live b/c MG sang this differently... as a matter of fact BETTER than the actual recording, TBH [like Stevie Wonder - yet another Motown alum still does to this day]. Very dated w/ MG's highwater drainie pants and the mid-'60s Zombie Mod style and the Bob Fosse-ish choreography. The Beatles [and the Rolling Stones] were hot then.
If your wondering about the guitarist(s) on this track it's likely The Funk Brothers team,Eddie"Chank"Willis,Joe Messina and Robert White. The Funk Brothers layed down all those vital music tracks for Motown acts in the 1960's.Check out "Standing in the Shadow of Motown" DVD.
The greatest guitar riff i have ever heard bar none. Marv Tarplin of the Miracles is my guess (it's a Smokey song/production right?). Listen to Marvin here and then listen to Mick singing the chorus of Satisfaction (which was recorded in Hollywood at RCA on the heels of this release).
UYea Berry Gordy made all the money. I read George's book as well. You missed the part about the "shady" contracts he had his acts sign & how disgruntled they became.
@sly821 You mean to tell me that someone says this is spam; after all the republicans put us through? Has to be a republican because they are the only ones who can't relate to anything especially Marvn Gaye.
Hi i had two black and white clipps of tempts singing my baby and dont look back but they went from you tube do you think we will get them back i was sick when they got taken off.
@anfieldroad2005 Go ask Barry Gordy's lawyers.Probably snagged on copyright grounds.Which is sad when labels like WEA do that as posting videos seem to me to only keep interest in the acts alive to younger audiences.
2:39, he clearly says "I fuck you n your ass"

Marvin didn't think he needed the 'charm school', and he was right. He was a stubborn kind of fellow.

Japan's version was great as well, although they pretty much made it their own, seeing as it doesn't share the same melody or tempo.

Yeah many artists today could benefit from charm schools like they had back then.

This song never loses its impact, or gets tedious, actually seems to get better the more you hear it. An uncommon feat.
