Monday was Sinatra's 96th birthday. As someone approaching 75 I cannot imagine a life without his brilliant music. He was the best, and when I hear him, as the song says, he makes me feel so young. Simply the best.
@LORDMCHUGH yh but you could argue that michael buble has turned into a corny 'pop' artist as most of his swing/jazz/big band music are just covers, his own music is always really cheesy
I USED to think Buble was OK but after some famous singer offered some tips on taking care of your voice, he lost me forever by replying that the difference between him and older singers like Frank and Dean was that they were singers but he's an entertainer!
Do you know who was the first "Pal Joey," and was the first to perform it on Broadway long before the movie? Quess. Times up. Gene Kelly. The Broadway Pal Joey was a lot more meaner than Frank played him.
The subject of the song is being called a "tramp" because she is down to Earth and doesn't do the "hoity-toity" routine that her detractors are probably guilty of. Listen to the lyrics, she actually being paid a compliment in the song. No wonder Vera starts to smile.
@subfixerlee if you watched the movie, you'd know that joey evans treats a woman like a dame and a dame like a lady. It's his philosophy/ joeyisms. so that's why he calls her a tramp
@MrBman39 I have seen the movie and I know Joey is a jerk, and even more of a jerk in the play. But the subject in the song, not the Rita Hayworth character, is what I am referring to. Are you implying that Joey is making up the song as he is singing it? Joey may mean to call Vera a tramp, but that isn't what the lyrics of the song are intended to mean. When I said "she" in my first post, I meant the the subject of the song itself.
ohh yess, mmmmm, marvelous, sing it baby, sing it loud,ha ha ha ha ,thankyou from the botom of my soul for posting this diamond,i only hope the you tube police dont remove this classic to soon.
For a man that didn't know how to read a piece of music he was amazing. It goes to show that it isn't just the great composition of a song but the performers and the lyricists that make a song great!
Lady Is A Tramp...Under My Skin....At Long Last Love....You Make Me Feel So Young....Fly Me To The Moon.....and on and on.....all would have remained obscure c show/cabaret tunes had Sinatra not made them would famous standards!
Do you know who played Joey on Broadway, when it first came out. Guess. O.K. times up. It was Gene Kelly. Joey is alot meaner in the Broadway show than in this movie.
Sinatra: (coolly sings) "That's why the lady is a tramp"
Rita: (outraged and thinking) Did he just call me tramp! Why that no good, rotten little... ah, well, ok then buster, your Sinatra, you have guts, and your the darn coolest guy around... Yeah, I like you a lot.
Ol blue eyes sure charms the dames... even if that means calling them tramps, now that's talent!
@ANASTASIACHAVEZFILM It was actually Tommy Dorsey that Frank studied. Frank was a tenor in TD's orchestra, and in similar fashion to Glenn Miller, Dorsey was the "front man" on the trombone; Frank (and perhaps the Pied Pipers) were often brought in mid-way through the show to sing a few numbers, then it returned to Tommy and the band, the real "star of the show". That is until Frank thought he'd try a solo career :)
But yes, Crosby was the king of breath control, bar none.
@ANASTASIACHAVEZFILM Agree with you about his innate sense...and he did take some time to nurture it by a lot swimming I might add. Now, he definitely didn't invent breath control...Bing Crosby was the real vocal master. He had impeccable technique. However, Sinatra put more focus on the clarity of the words and delivery, which is what he was known for.
End of my tirade LOL. As a musician I am very passionate about this subject. It's very difficult to find musicians who practice a holistic approach to there craft. This is why I have so much respect for Sinatra.
Unfortunately, this is what has become of music: just a marketing campaign. True, marketing was always a key tool for Sinatra, but it wasn't the forefront emphasis. It was about craft, first and foremost.
Another missing element from craftsmanship are good composers for original songs. This is a rare gift to find these days, musicians with the gift of melody who could also equally support/accentuate with beautiful orchestrations. It's either your a good arranger or a good melody writer.
I do not doubt Buble's passion, because he performs live very, very well. But when I hear him, I see an excellent marketing campaign of someone who got to singing this repertoire first. This is because Buble's mentor is Paul Anka, the writer for the english words of 'My Way.' Listen to him singing, & you'll see where Buble's singing style is really like.
@StriderBLH I like Paul Anka as a songwriter and vocalist (he's a very good singer), but he his singing does not compare to Buble, and certainly not to Sinatra. Buble and Sinatra both had much better tone than Paul Anka.
It was on this foundation, Sinatra began adding layers to his craft, by surrounding himself with excellent instrumentalists and orchestrators like Nelson Riddle to accentuate what he developed.
There will be. The key will be someone who not only accentuates what came naturally to Sinatra, but comes up with something distinctive and original that people can't compare that singer to Sinatra. This was the key to Sinatra's success: he learned from Bing Crosby his good qualities, and then set out to make sure he created his own distinctive singing style. But, what he always carried from Bing was that it was always about the words.
I would rather have quality rather than quantity any day. It's true that it's nice in some ways that someone like buble is singing this repertoire...but the question to ask is then is he doing justice to the music? If not, does that give him legitimacy to represent this musical style? I think not.
He hardly does word painting with the melody like Sinatra, no where near it. As a result, I think people are completely missing the beauty of the music, and simply falling for Buble's charm instead
@StriderBLH I've thought about this too, but lets face it, no one's going to have the same caliber as Frank, but we can't judge anyone who clearly has a passion for his music, is in a position to sing and allow people to hear their renditions, and if that somehow leads people back to the early originals, well thats fine with me :)
Great singing and great scene, but I think this song is from "Babes in Arms," *not* "Pal Joey." And it doesn't really make sense that Rita H.'s character would be pissed at Frank's character implying that she is a "tramp." "Tramp" in the sense of the song meant that the woman was a "vagabond," not a "slut" or whatever.
Definitely from Pal Joey and based on what occurred earlier in the film, Sinatra is using "tramp" as an insult. She was a former stripper (tramp) and now a society "lady" through marriage. Hence, the "lady" is a "tramp".
@LORDMCHUGH To a certain point you are correct...but I would want someone who brings back this music to do it well...rather than halfheartedly. Where I do agree with you is that Buble has probably the best band for this genre of music, hands down, and he has charisma...but his musicianship and vocal tone are REALLY lacking.
@fincaman2 ummm, no. Sinatra never "needed" the mob for anything, although its well documented he was cozy with the mob and used their influence to get the part in "From Here To Eternity" which landed him the Best Supporting Oscar. But both were trailblazers in the entertainment industry and had a lot in common, personally & professionally. But you need to check your math and facts re: #1 records. Quite clear on who's, pardon the pun, #1. Still, I love 'em both. RIP. Without a song...
And seeming as how much you like facts Fincaman2 -- Sinatra won 13 Grammys to Elvis' three. Record sales don't determine class. If you want to be a sheep or always follow the flock then move to China!
@Fincaman2--don't know what's sadder the fact that you speak so highly of drug addict Elvis or the fact that your so called "facts" couldn't be further from reality. You quote Elvis' number 1s versus Frank Sinatra's, but in what countries? A song which is number 1 in the US could be number 4 in the UK. Secondly What u have completely missed is that Frank could act AND sing. He won an Oscar as well as two competitive Golden Globes in SERIOUS roles while Elvis was bopping about in Jailhouse Rock!!
Rita was truly a beautiful and quite shy woman early in her career. She thought of herself as a dancer not an actress. She wasa good actress though. They dubbed her voice when singing. She did not like that. She had bouts with alcholicism as she aged. Her beauty really went south rapidly. they had to hide her lines etc. She died from alzheimer's in 1987. Many mega stars died that year including Fred Astaire 1 month later.Rita was Fred's favorite partner.
You always know when you have won an argument when the other person starts to resort to personal insults , what I said was FACTUAL try refuting what I said . Sinatra WAS helped buy the mob FACT !!! Elvis DID have 1000 no 1's worldwide FACT Sinatra had 2 or 3 no 1's FACT why can't you stick to the FACTS in stead of hurling insults
@fincaman2 Touche ! Have no problem you liking Elvis more than any other singer. As I say I like him myself. In my opinion Sinatra was the best interpreter of song of the last century , by a country mile. Just don't get the stuff about his private life. I am not a moralist. I just dig the music. Mozart was a freemason for god's sake. As for statistics did Westlife have more No.1's than the Beatles? Cheers mate. BTW really enjoyed the guitar tutorial.
This is truly a classic scene in American movie history- Frank was the "bad" boy of his time- and Rita Hayworth is just perfection- Pal Joey- TRULY underrated movie- one of favs of all time.
@blackycrawford a great version, but almost a different style, ya know? Always loved the energy in BC's songs & playing. FS had the energy in his arrangements as well, such as in this clip. Not that Sinatra didnt have spice to his voice, it was just different.
@houstonsatyr well, some of us are out there trying to keep the torch burning, keeping the spirit alive of The Great American Songbook, the crooner, being an Entertainer. FS was the standard bearer, no doubt about it. But its hard nowadays. In this clip you can see how this was kinda the norm, with the band, the arrangement and all. Now, need I go into how much crap there is, all computerized and over-produced. Us crooners need yer support, ya'll! Help the lounges, the legends still out there!!
This part of the movie is great, and my favorite...cause is funny
first the guy hitting his head against the pole,
and then her reaction towards "the lady is tramp" is funny and also has a classic charm that its so hard to see now a days, and
finally, but actually it was the first thing I noticed, Frank is hand faking on the piano, his hands are always in the same place and the guy who is really playing is doing scales up and down...
Well just thought I shared these things with whoever
I mean....FUCK! You hear Buble's shit come on....the opening (and pretty much the entire song) IS THE EXACT SAME MUSIC!!!! No variation whatsoever! Pisses me off when I get excited at hearing the opening and I get HIS shitty ass voice instead!
@mamboviv - mambo you are so entirely right. buble is commercially imitative of Frank but can NEVER EVER even begin to approach Frank. Even when he sang with Tony Bennett, Buble fell massively short. A cheap imitatation at best.
@mamboviv ..ha, funny stuff...I personally feel like Frank reached his peak [vocally] in the early-mid 60s - More body, strength, more control (of his vibrato, especially), swag, age, and life experiences to add to it. Have u heard "You Go To My Head" from the 'Nice & Easy' album? - Truly Amazing!!
@mamboviv Just because someone is comparing Frank with Michael doesnt mean you need to call him douchebag,I actually think that Buble has a great voice, but nothing compared to Frank Sinatra's lol, not by far.
legend- Remember the character Frank was playing in this film Joey Evans was supposed to be a second rate singer from San Francisco. But, Frank gives a first class performance as always. This is Frank at his absolute peak and his smoothness and perfect tone will never be matched.
Sinatra was cool before anyone knew what it meant. Watch him exhale the smoke as he gets up from the piano - thank goodness there were no health nuts to complain back then. Frank would have had a few choice words for them I bet.
I love this song. It can be found in a few of Frank's movies. I love these older movies - represents a simpler time. We should only be so lucky have so much charm and charisma. Thanks for posting this clip.
I have to agree with Lemmiming1; you truly are a pessimist, doggysector. I've been listening Frank for years, where I'm only 17 myself. Although I do not entirely agree with you (or rather entirely disagree with you), I do like the way you put your pessimism. Let's hope society will get less narcissistic and more cultivated!
One of the best moments of "Pal Joey." Just as it used to be said that Astaire's dance duets were seductions, Sinatra's wicked rendition of "The Lady is a Tramp" does the same thing to goddess Rita Hayworth. Watch her go from coy to amused to completely defrosted throughout this very smooth number. And the orchestra (Nelson Riddle?) is no slouch either. Love the little quick turn of the head @ 1:59. This is essential Sinatra.
MrGopera, Michael Buble, Raoul Malo are two that can almost compete with Ole Blue Eyes. No one will ever come close to Sinatra, but these two are pretty good, enough to compare anyway.
I have to agree with you. Music today is nothing like the Sinatra era...........ah, the good old days when you could actually hum to the music.....it had style, it had rhythm, it had soul like nothing today has. I will always love that era. Teaching my grandson too, and he's actually an avid fan of Gene Kelly and some others because I play them so much. He's 5 years old and already a lover of the 40's and 50's style music. (self pat on back)
I agree with you. As long as we have newcomers like Michael Buble and Raul Malo who re-create the music and kids realize they are remakes of the great artists from the past, like Sinatra, Hogie Carmichael, Glenn Miller, Lena Horne, the list goes on and on as you said before..............look at American Idol, they have a category where the singers pick old standards, they are bringing the greats back to life! I love it.
Isso é uma boa dose de cultura em tempos de conteúdos rasos.
Celebremos os bom tempos, pois estes não voltam.
P.S.: Adorei a versão com Tony Benett e Lady Gaga, quisera eu que ela fosse sempre assim.

@JadeTomZ Elvis got to the top with talent , Sinatra needed the mob , when he gets to 10 no 1's he will have achieved 1% of what Elvis did

@52musicccmannn
You always know when you have won an argument when the other person starts to resort to personal insults , what I said was FACTUAL try refuting what I said . Sinatra WAS helped buy the mob FACT !!! Elvis DID have 1000 no 1's worldwide FACT Sinatra had 2 or 3 no 1's FACT why can't you stick to the FACTS in stead of hurling insults
fincaman2 1 year ago
@fincaman2 Touche ! Have no problem you liking Elvis more than any other singer. As I say I like him myself. In my opinion Sinatra was the best interpreter of song of the last century , by a country mile. Just don't get the stuff about his private life. I am not a moralist. I just dig the music. Mozart was a freemason for god's sake. As for statistics did Westlife have more No.1's than the Beatles? Cheers mate. BTW really enjoyed the guitar tutorial.

This is truly a classic scene in American movie history- Frank was the "bad" boy of his time- and Rita Hayworth is just perfection- Pal Joey- TRULY underrated movie- one of favs of all time.

blackycrawford 2 years ago
@blackycrawford a great version, but almost a different style, ya know? Always loved the energy in BC's songs & playing. FS had the energy in his arrangements as well, such as in this clip. Not that Sinatra didnt have spice to his voice, it was just different.
makthnife 1 year ago
It's not only about the performance that makes this song belong to Sinatra, it's the attitude.

Frank has his DNA all over this song. I've heard other versions but they fall short of this amazing recording. Thank you big guy.

Fred Astaire had 29 different dancing partners in the movies. Rita was his favorite. I do not blame him!
hajune 2 years ago 2
Damn ! I wish Sinatra was alive today- this song just shows what he could teach singers' today.
houstonsatyr 2 years ago
@houstonsatyr well, some of us are out there trying to keep the torch burning, keeping the spirit alive of The Great American Songbook, the crooner, being an Entertainer. FS was the standard bearer, no doubt about it. But its hard nowadays. In this clip you can see how this was kinda the norm, with the band, the arrangement and all. Now, need I go into how much crap there is, all computerized and over-produced. Us crooners need yer support, ya'll! Help the lounges, the legends still out there!!

hollypower2 2 years ago
This part of the movie is great, and my favorite...cause is funny
first the guy hitting his head against the pole,
and then her reaction towards "the lady is tramp" is funny and also has a classic charm that its so hard to see now a days, and
finally, but actually it was the first thing I noticed, Frank is hand faking on the piano, his hands are always in the same place and the guy who is really playing is doing scales up and down...
Well just thought I shared these things with whoever

AMEN!
I mean....FUCK! You hear Buble's shit come on....the opening (and pretty much the entire song) IS THE EXACT SAME MUSIC!!!! No variation whatsoever! Pisses me off when I get excited at hearing the opening and I get HIS shitty ass voice instead!
draganryo 2 years ago 2
@mamboviv - mambo you are so entirely right. buble is commercially imitative of Frank but can NEVER EVER even begin to approach Frank. Even when he sang with Tony Bennett, Buble fell massively short. A cheap imitatation at best.

@mamboviv relax there completly different singers both good in there on rights

makthnife 1 year ago
@mamboviv ..ha, funny stuff...I personally feel like Frank reached his peak [vocally] in the early-mid 60s - More body, strength, more control (of his vibrato, especially), swag, age, and life experiences to add to it. Have u heard "You Go To My Head" from the 'Nice & Easy' album? - Truly Amazing!!

@mamboviv are u crazy? buble is amazing

@mamboviv yes!!!! Michael buble sucks !!!!!
Geminisneco 1 year ago
@mamboviv Just because someone is comparing Frank with Michael doesnt mean you need to call him douchebag,I actually think that Buble has a great voice, but nothing compared to Frank Sinatra's lol, not by far.
Popino09 1 year ago
legend- Remember the character Frank was playing in this film Joey Evans was supposed to be a second rate singer from San Francisco. But, Frank gives a first class performance as always. This is Frank at his absolute peak and his smoothness and perfect tone will never be matched.

Francis Albert...no one comes close...the greatest of em all.

This illustrates why compared to Frank Sinatra other crooners are tramps. Such phraseology.

Doggysector dont be so bitter I am 21 and I doknow Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. For some music the mind has to ripen.

This is essential Sinatra.
mca1218 2 years ago 2
mca1218, without a doubt, Sinatra played her like she had never been played before. She never knew what hit her! LOL
Great scene! Great movie!

its ashame their are no more musicians to match this great talent in the mainstream music scene.
MrGOPERA 2 years ago
MrGopera, Michael Buble, Raoul Malo are two that can almost compete with Ole Blue Eyes. No one will ever come close to Sinatra, but these two are pretty good, enough to compare anyway.
midlynn 2 years ago
Its true they are exceptions but in general, none compare to people like miles davis sinatra ray charles the list goes on.
MrGOPERA 2 years ago
I have to agree with you. Music today is nothing like the Sinatra era...........ah, the good old days when you could actually hum to the music.....it had style, it had rhythm, it had soul like nothing today has. I will always love that era. Teaching my grandson too, and he's actually an avid fan of Gene Kelly and some others because I play them so much. He's 5 years old and already a lover of the 40's and 50's style music. (self pat on back)
midlynn 2 years ago
I think people will eventually see how great all this old music is and get back to the real foundations of what a musician is.
MrGOPERA 2 years ago 4
I agree with you. As long as we have newcomers like Michael Buble and Raul Malo who re-create the music and kids realize they are remakes of the great artists from the past, like Sinatra, Hogie Carmichael, Glenn Miller, Lena Horne, the list goes on and on as you said before..............look at American Idol, they have a category where the singers pick old standards, they are bringing the greats back to life! I love it.
