In that same section, in October 2003, Tony Renna had a similar impact in private testing. The results would have ended things at Indy as we know it. To say there was blood is an understatement.
I was the fan who ended up with a 2 inch piece of carbon fiber sticking out of my cheek. Could've been much worse. Still can't wait for next years race.
@araregoodguy Yeah they are designed to break apart in an attempt to absorb the impact. The cockpits are reinforced so they hold together.
It's kind of like the crumple zones they build into cars, they are intentionally weaker so you when you hit something the you stop moving over a longer distance.
I agree. The ones who have done that so far, like Kenny Brack and Mike Conway, have gotten so lucky. One of these times though, a car is going to fly into the fence wrong, and it will end tragically
Was sitting above you, section 44 row H. Was looking towards the finish so I did not see Conway go airborne, but heard the crash and saw the thousand parts fly up. Surprised if you did not get hit with the debris!
You get a sense of the force of the impact of 1500lbs of Indycar flying into the fence at over 200mph when you see the fence where you were standing, which was a ways from the crash, start to shake violently then the tub skids by. Great footage!
If you look at the crash video a tire goes through the fence and hits a pillar on the other side, where you were. Conway suffered Fractures in his lower back and multiple in his leg, he wont return for at least 3 months, Ryan Hunter Reay suffered a thumb injury as well, he will race this weekend at texas though. Mike will be missed for awile. :( this is real not a rumor.!!!!!
Wow! Too bad the camera it wasn't pointing up the other turn. Which view would have been more shocking, the people right in front of the car exploding, or the people seeing only the tub skidding to rest. Glad he'll be ok. You can see the shredded carbon fiber pieces between the fence and stands.
Just to be a little more specific, you come up right to my left at 4:41 and you stood next to me for a while, sorry if me talking ruined your video i was really intoxicated! But i love your view of the initial crash, great job!
This is so fucking awesome, no joke i am the dude you were standing next to while you were filming. Nice to see you posted your video quick! Hopefully i will get mine up soon!

The way the cars disintegrate in that fencing is really dodgy. Someone else will be killed like that before too long.

@araregoodguy its the way the cars are designed. Theyre designed to coe apart in a crash like that.,

The PA guy (Dave Calabaro) didn't know who was involved for a long time. With something like that you want to be sure. He did fine.
