Now KDE is controlled by Microsoft so open source supporters shouldn't use it. Gnome has an extremely good library called GTK+3 that now can perfectly compete with QT (the library used by KDE).
@DAGONLINUX I'll be promptly moving to KDE as soon as this shit hits my distro. I might even move pre-emptively. KDE is actually pretty usable now, it's just lacking the level of contribution that Gnome gets. Hopefully this will piss a few devs off enough to switch over.
Ubuntu is getting more bloated and commercial with every release too. What the FUCK is Ubuntu One all about? Get the fuck out of my distro you piece of shit.
@Jester995 Can't see what all the fuss is about its new, new things are always quirky stange and unusual to us all at first,. and since one can add any desktop to any distro, it makes that complaints I see here pointless. I think its made for far larger screens and will incoporate touchscreen tech at a later date in which case its layout makes perfect sense. Of course it also kicks Microsoft in the nuts lets see them rip this off and try to get away with it in court.
@darkhorizon1066 If this is the future of Gnome then what distro you are using makes no difference, all the development time will be going into the latest version and Gnome 2 will mothball. Just because it has Ubuntu in the title doesn't make it relevant only to that distro.
@DAGONLINUX I actually tried it recently. While I love the idea of leaving Mark Shuttlecock's distro in the dirt, I just can't live without some of the usability features they've added to Ubuntu. I'll just be removing Ubuntu One and the rest of the junk until something comparable comes along.
@sebbeks If you bothered to read properly he actually said "very few bugs" not "zero bugs". We don't need your expert advice to know that every piece of software on this scale has bugs. Perhaps a few English lessons are in order?
@Jester995 I have a hard time seeing Debian TESTING having "very few bugs". Whenever people say some software have "very few bugs", for instance Mac and Linux fanboys, they actually mean that there aren't as many bugs as there were before or that the bugs aren't equally superficial as there were before (BSOD). Perhaps you should learn about the differences of Debian sid, Debian testing, and Debian stable?
@sebbeks I was just clarifying what someone else said. I never claimed that Debian testing had "very few bugs" I just pointed out that you were misquoting him. Perhaps you should learn some basic cognitive skills?
@sebbeks Someone who comments when people try to put words in someone's mouth and then correct them on something they never actually said. I think that's a pretty concise summary of who I am in this context.
I don't like the gnom3 shell or virtual desktops, virtual desktops are not a natural concept. It makes much more sense to have an infinite zoomworld ala pad++
It looks like Gnome is trying to be more organized. I think Gnome Shell looks nice. I personally don't care about wobbly windows and all the sparkly compiz crap. I just want an environment that will stay out of my way and increase productivity.
GNOME shell looks diabolical. The KDE community's vision and willingness years ago to bite the bullet, rip things up and re-lay the foundations is paying off today in a big way. KDE SC 4.4 is here and its rocking. Its not perfect (is anything?) but its awesome to be sure and its full potential still has not been fully realized. Good things to come.
I really didn't like it when I first tried it out, initial videos make it look really goofy. However, after using it for a few weeks I find productivity from improved desktop organization.
The lack of menus with sub menus bothered me at first, but it has much more the feel of being able to get right to what I want to do. Managing different projects per work space or different windows for Firefox per context is much more practical. Bet great for touch screen too, but not at any sacrifice.
gnome shell looks like poo.... its just crappy javascript combined with clutter chucked on top of gnome.. what a mess... and looks like shit. Personally I think kde have the best innovation at the moment and If this is gnome's idea of innovation.. then i'm moving to kde
i love gnome how it is. it just has one problem, it's slow ass IMO. idk whats to blame for this. maybe metacity or gnome itself. no idea. i dont care though, just needs to be faster and not uhm.. THIS as seen in the video. (which probably is even sower..)
@SeltsamerAttraktor He he, thanks. Long time ago (in RedHad 6.2 era) I was a KDE user too. Then, after some time Ubuntu showed up and... voila, so much hated Gnome became my main desktop environment. Although I never realized what happened to KDE, it use to be all about functionality now it's something else... did their focus change or it's just me :D
@mytube232 Even if it would, you can still fall back to your loved compiz, just write compiz --replace and it will be done... (eventually add it to your default session, but I believe ubuntu developers will create some BFUid GUI for BFUs)
Gnome Shell sucks.

KDE is a bucket of nicely painted crap that can't even run two sound cards properly. I'm staying with Gnome.

Not entirely sold on this functionality, not sure what it adds to the system or someones productivity.
Various desktops on Linux and my iMac sound good but still to this day I have never found a need to keep switching from desktop 1 to desktop 4 etc.

This looks pretty dumb, and most of the functionality is already in compiz. The more I use KDE the more I feel like making the switch.

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
