Look, India is a multi-religious state, multi-sectarian state, which means that folks kinda have a clue about the real basic tenets of other religions even if they don't subscribe to them. Regarding Hindi, if you're really into it, check out some great soap operas from the TV network Sahara 1. That's one of the Hindi language channels over there. It was a real trip to go to my aunt's house and flip the channels and hear half a dozen different languages from channels 2 -40...lol!!

@indischt I have not learned Sanskrit, but I have learned ABOUT Sanskrit...and Prakrits. In Singapore (where I lived for a year), I learned some Malay words. Malay has a lot of words from Sanskrit. In fact, the name of the country comes from Sanskrit Singa = lion, Pura = city. I also learned some others, like Sundara = beautiful, Vijaya = success/victory, Bhasa = language, etc. But I still need to learn more Japanese and Chinese, and Sanskrit has a very complex verb system like Latin.

You're right about Singapore and the meaning behind the name of the city. But I do not think the name is is derived form Sanskrit. Rather from what I heard it is derived from Tamil, along with another country in the region-Malaysia. Malay comes from the Tamil word, Mallai. So Malaysia is like Land of Mountains or Hills.

As I noted, "Singa" (in some variant spelling, including "Singha", as in the Thai beer) means "lion", and "Pura" means "city". Of course, ancient Persian and Sanskrit are very closely related, but Sanskrit is also related (quite a bit more distantly) to Greek (and English!). Sanskrit "Pura" and Greek "Polis" are related, as I think is English "-bury"/"borough".
Interesting how all of these things work together. The idea of ''Pur'' and ''Polis'' being two suffixes of the same root is pretty fascinating. Learn something new everyday!!

Look, India is a multi-religious state, multi-sectarian state, which means that folks kinda have a clue about the real basic tenets of other religions even if they don't subscribe to them. Regarding Hindi, if you're really into it, check out some great soap operas from the TV network Sahara 1. That's one of the Hindi language channels over there. It was a real trip to go to my aunt's house and flip the channels and hear half a dozen different languages from channels 2 -40...lol!!

@indischt I have not learned Sanskrit, but I have learned ABOUT Sanskrit...and Prakrits. In Singapore (where I lived for a year), I learned some Malay words. Malay has a lot of words from Sanskrit. In fact, the name of the country comes from Sanskrit Singa = lion, Pura = city. I also learned some others, like Sundara = beautiful, Vijaya = success/victory, Bhasa = language, etc. But I still need to learn more Japanese and Chinese, and Sanskrit has a very complex verb system like Latin.

Interesting thing I learned is that Ancient Persian and Sanskrit are sister languages, infact almost like mutually intelligible dialects really....
You're right about Singapore and the meaning behind the name of the city. But I do not think the name is is derived form Sanskrit. Rather from what I heard it is derived from Tamil, along with another country in the region-Malaysia. Malay comes from the Tamil word, Mallai. So Malaysia is like Land of Mountains or Hills.

As I noted, "Singa" (in some variant spelling, including "Singha", as in the Thai beer) means "lion", and "Pura" means "city". Of course, ancient Persian and Sanskrit are very closely related, but Sanskrit is also related (quite a bit more distantly) to Greek (and English!). Sanskrit "Pura" and Greek "Polis" are related, as I think is English "-bury"/"borough".

@Rationalific Continued... Also, the German "-burgh" comes from the same original word that led to "-poli(s)", "-pura", and "-bury/borough". So, you could call "Edinburgh" or "Pittsburgh" -> "Edinpura" and "Pittspura", or if you want to anglicize them, "Edinpore" and "Pittspore". There are so many variations with just this word! Also, did you know that "wheel", "circle", and "chakra" are related? Maybe you'd guess the latter two were (seeing as "c" had a "k" sound, and "l"/"r" are similar).
