  • my favorite EJ song as a demo :) ahhhhhhhhh, magical.

  • Bootlegs exist of Elton performing the missing verse live, so I don't know about lawsuits..

It's amazing how the "Madman.." songs reatin their power, even without all the production.

  • I wish these Dick James Demo's would be released into legit albums. Great stuff.

  • What are they waiting to release a Deluxe Edition of MATW album?

  • "Slow down Joe...I'm a rock n roll man....." truer words have never been spoken.......EJ is responsible for the soundtrack of my life!

  • Mine too

  • the added verse is what composers write usually for first and provides just technical exercise for the musician to write music around it, it is formed by short and close words with the accent on the strong beat. that's why in many demos we have the 'added verses'. thus it is not added: it is written for first. bye

  • I don't think that's true because there are live versions of this song which include the 3rd verse.

  • Search you tube for the 1971 Live BBC version. It actually includes the "missing" verse.

From what I understand about Elton's and Bernie's writing approach was that Bernie put down the words and only then would Elton write the tune. It certainly doesn't seem that Elton needed any 'technical exercises.' Search you tube for "Elton ITAS Masterclass" or "Elton John Cooker Song" and you'll see.

  • you're certainly right, I've seen the masterclass as well as 'the oven song' but any I repeat any musician needs to do some practice now and then, elton is maybe the greatest living musician with a sensitivity and a feeling form melody and harmony rare to find. and hard to maintain... (see The Fox...) so, I think that he too has to do some practicing. And still remains the biggest.

    Bye,

  • thanks for this , excellent!! used to tribute this guy before i got fat!!

  • This is great!

  • Listening to this version makes you realize the brilliance of Elton and Bearnie.

  • Absolutley beautiful stuff. One of my favorite Elton songs of all fucking time. The extra verse is not only essential but awesome.

  • AWESOME! Thanks :)

  • Just a great song and yes it is easy to see why the final verse was omitted in the studio version.

  • Hi Duncan, I picked this up from your favorites. I love demos and rare recording. Very interesting. -Ron

  • Me too Ron , i think this is just great. I actually prefer the lyric in this one , i think. Both great. -Duncan.

  • What's the difference?

  • Apart from the added verse? Elton sings 'motel prison' rather than 'motel baby'.

  • It's easy to see why they decided to omit that final verse on the released version. They could've seriously gotten sued by the Holiday Inn corporation for claiming that their televisions don't work, the food is stale, and they have lousy room service.

  • not to mention that their hotels are "prisons" i love this version, even though i understand why they changed it

  • Interesting...notice the different lyric...instead of:

    until you've been

    in a motel baby,

    like the Holiday Inn

    he says:

    until you've been

    in a motel prison,

    like the Holiday Inn

  • I have always liked this song, but I really like the demo extended version.

  • it as an extra vers to the trak on the madman album

  • a verey good demo love it

  • Dick James Demos huh cool $tuff ill check it out thanks
