@Paulsur and @Kathyrula My bonsai tree has no trunk it grows out of what looks like Bamboo and the leaves look like flowers but green please HELP WHAT TYPE IS IT>
Do you have any advice on caring for a Gardenia Bonsai? I don't think I'm doing a good job. The soil is always very dry, even shortly after watering it, but it seems that when I water it more often, the leaves turn brown and fall off. Help, please. Thank you.
@lizbethk1 Plum, cherry, apricot, quince, and pear are among the more popular bonsai subjects, and no the fruit are not smaller. In fact fruit trees tend to be bonsai subjects for their flowers. After flowering, the flowers are pulled off. The exception being crabapple and some trees in which the artist wants a fruit ot two to justapose the tree with. Do a Google images of the subjects I mention here to see.
@b4m1as im not a bonsai pro but i had this problem with my bonsai and then my gf took care of it and watered it less, every 3-4 days, and it did much better. Overwatering may not be your specific problem but very well could be...
@b4m1as .....less water esp in colder temperatures/seasons, also with it being winter months (depending on where your from) you may need to relocate its position to give it a little more light.(not too much direct sunlight though.)if you find that the soil is in need of water still every day or so you made need to think about repotting as bonsai stems can use up much of the valuable nutrients in the soil. i'm not an expert...these are just a couple of problems ive encountered with my bonsai.
verry cool indeed i just baught me some seeds for bonsai, and was just wondering what bonasi soil is...? ps cant you just use some kind of dirt or sand...? thanks
@EliteKozarcan Lol for a minute I thought you were making this comment in reference to the video; then I looked back a page and saw that you were just commenting on a comment. XD
The Ginko Biloba is cool. Ginko has no living relatives, and is considered a living fossil. Its existence in purely wild forms is debatable, as the only known wild Ginko trees, in China, have been tended by monks for a thousand years, and are suspected to have possibly been planted by them. The Ginko Biloba is the only extant plant of its genus, the last relative of which has only been seen in fossils dating to more than two million years old.
5GeardTrek - Any native plant, tree, shrub, that normally grows well in your area can be trained into bonsai without any problems. How well it will live or thrive....well, that's entirely up to you once you decide to put it in a container.
Chasnsx, you have no idea of what you're talking about. If you block others from posting comments on your videos then it's not right that you give yours on others videos. So please be quiet. All you do is harm the art of bonsai.
@redflame183 I think all bonsais can be kept indoors, since I have a Juniper Bonsai and it does a very good job inside since it's warmer in the winter. But all bonsais can be kept outside when there is no more chances of frost which is around May if you live in North America:) if you live in Europe, then I think the chance of frost ends in April since they have 3 months of winter but North America has about 5-6 months of winter.
@Myobokuuzan i just got a juniper yesterday but I'm not sure how much water it needs, can you tell me how much you water it? Also next spring I'm gonna replant, and if you know what type of pot is good that would be a great help.
@userbrn738 Juniper bonsais are exactly like the Juniper bushes. They are hardy and they are also evergreen :) Most people like to keep them in pots because it looks really good, but they can be planted outside where they can spread their roots out more. Oh, and the watering they just need to be watered when the soil is getting dry. Just put your finger into the soil like 1 cm and then if it's wet, don't water it! if it's dry water it :)
@userbrn738 You can if you want... but I only fertilize very sparingly... if it's not looking very green and the soil is all right, then I will give it some 20-20-20 fertilizer, but very little. Since they aren't very greedy about fertilizer and they just need a little bit :)
@userbrn738 Aha I don't think you should use the fertilizer sticks :) You should use those for your houseplants instead :) You should use the liquid fertilizer. It's a lot better in my opinion :) Just to be sure that if you want to keep them outside all year long just put them into the ground and water and fertilize once a week just so it wont get stressed out and the fertilizer will help it grow more roots. Then by the fall, it will prepare to be ready for the winter :)
@Myobokuuzan Hehehe I like in the center of NYC so I don't have an outdoor area, so indoor is where I keep my bonsai. I hope for winter it's cold enough indoors for it to properly go into dormancy.
@userbrn738 Lol they wont go dormant in the winter :P They are evergreens :) well the good thing about the bonsai is that you just have to re pot it every year or so because the rooting system gets really big.
ppl a lil advice dont buy a bonsai if you dont realy think that you can ceep watering it or youd forget to water it bcuz its so sad when ppl buy a bonsai and get bored of it and stop watering it for those who have a bonsai would you imagine doing all that hard work and then it dies and you have to throw it out :( it realy pissed me off when i heard that the oldest bonsai that was over 800 years old died bcuz of a careless owner who didnt water it
That's how bonsai works. The small container keeps it from growing too big. The roots are also trimmed to help keep the growth under control. Wires are wrapped around branches and the trunk to bend them to whatever desired shape.
There's nothing special about the types of tree that can be used for bonsai. Bonsai is simply a technique fro growing trees to keep them small.
I got kind worried from some of the comments people are leaving about dead junipers. I bought two ACE Hardware Nursery. They both have nice green foliage and seem to be drinking up more water than I was under the impression they requested..up to being watered like 3 times a week...do these seem like healthy trees from my description. I understand juniper can be dead for months before they show..? I love these things haha. I like wired them and all..can someone hit me wit some juniper advice?
No the tree isn't dead it still grows just has a patch that doesn't grow at all or extremely slowly. The rest of the tree grows and is green. It gets fed every two weeks and gets 12 hrs of light a day every day.
I have a juniper bonsai which I put in a bigger pot about two weeks after doing this I noticed a brown patch developing. I took a bonsai expert's advise and cut away the brn spots and put it back in the original pot. It is about six months later and the hole has not filled I keep this tree inside can anyone help me with this is there something I am missing. Should I put it outside? Seems kinda cold here for it to be out there. Any info is appreciated.
well, unfortunatly, if you have kept your juniper indoors it is probably dead by now, conifers can't breathe the air indoors, too much bacteria builds up and the tree can't defend itself, if you are interested in indoor bonsai, try tropical or sub-tropical trees like ficus, bottletree or acacia.
I'd advise you avoid that. I've seen very few of those live. They glue the rocks on the top, and therefore, no matter how much you water, it just runs off. Also, the ones you buy in the mall, especially junipers, are probably dead before you even by them (conifers can stay green and healthy looking for weeks after death). Want a cheap one? Spend $20 on Bonsai by Sunset (book) and spend about $10 on a small tree from the nursery and you can make your own.
indeed, I agree... bonsai with rocks glued to the top are called "malsai" and usually they are very young, dead and cheap, even the pots are usually plastic or of poor quality.
Correction. No self respecting juniper will last indoors all year. These species REQUIRE dormancy to live long lives. Grown indoors all year they will die within five years. DO NOT GROW JUNIPERS INDOORS!

Juniper can not be grown inside, it may be the level of sunlight, humidity, temperature stability, or many other variables that do that.. Care of bonsai is all about the consistent watering(mostly at least), and if you are a busy person you might want to take a class.. Especially if you live in the desert like I do.
