@nocalsteve In fairness, keep in mind that because of the nature of the mistake, the explanation had to fill a precise amount of time. They had to stretch a little bit.
Wink may not have worked for Goodson-Todman, but they never seemed to have trouble booking him for their shows. He and Sandy were hilarious on TattleTales.
The only thing I can figure is that the losing contestant from the game had already left the studio, and in a world without cell phones, they couldn't get to her.
@henrytvwhiz NBC probably had some of the most stringent standards in terms of game show integrity of the 3 networks. They probably had to go through all that to explain what happned. Ahh, but Ol' Tom, master of polish, makes it look all soooo fun.
I like how they took the time to explain this, when they could have thrown the game out and re-played thus, screwing over Gene's partner (forgot her name) which many shows would do, but this is so much more fair and it gives fans a little insight into producing TV.
This is what I miss about game shows. Nowadays, all the game shows are big-money, prime time, polished productions. They almost never show anything that goes wrong, it's so highly edited that you lose all feeling of there being anything "real" about it.
Hey , GSN is playing these Episodes at 2:30pm this week so all you Match Game & Gameshow Youtubers ,set up your recording machines to catch Gene Rayburn & Wink Martindale on Password Plus .
Makes you wonder how Mr. Ludden would've handled this situation.

The tape was erased? Are you sure that the puzzle wasn't about Richard Nixon?

Very cool to actually see a puzzle card outside the gameboard like that!

@WhatsAYak And it was seen again during Super Password, at the end of the Tournament of Champions.

Geez.. I know those folks at NBC were quick to erase games shows back in the day.. but, hey, at least let it air once ...

Its cool to see game show host as panelists on other game shows
dboy122660 1 year ago
@dboy122660 That's how Richard Dawson got his start (as a panelist on Match Game before hosting Family Feud)

@TyVulpine LOL, he was a famous TV actor before Match Game. Remember Hogan's Heroes of the 1960's?

Could they have drawn that BORING thing out any longer? (Rhetorical question!)
msk7046 2 years ago
@msk7046 I think it drawn out 5 times longer than it needed to be because Wink Martindale couldn't just shut up and let Tom talk.

Why didn't they just re-enact the entire erased segment before this episode went on the air?

i thought allen ludden was the host?
DrSurprise 3 years ago
he was. he hosted from 1979 to 1980, and when his illness permanently sidelined him in late 1980 (which eventually killed him), tom kennedy took over
ieeeeeeeeeeeee 3 years ago
