I used to love Astro Boy when I was around 4 or so, then one morning it simply wasn't on anymore. That was about 1968! I had the smallest of memories of it and was actually really happy when i heard that Adult Swim would be showing it again. I had to laugh at just how weird and goofy it was to see so many years later!
Just watching the opening made me think hard about what little I remembered about it. I was happy to see an old favorite show again though.
ahhh Astro boy..I was too young to watch the original series when it was first aired but saw it growing up in the 80's along side the 80's series..5.50pm ABC tv..dad would sit with us as watch it before dinner and the news at 6.00pm lol..yup life was run by the clock or um the TV in my house growing up lol..on another note..I really dislike people who over think childrens cartoons..they may be created by adults with subliminal messages but really who cares..we all loved them then as we do now
Growing up as kids dad use to pick up my baby brother , pretend he was Astro Boy, hold him high above his shoulders , like he was flying , he'd burst through the door , we'd clap and cheer , and sing the theme, great childhood memories, never forget the smile on my brother face , he was about 1 or 2 at the time , dad had to stop it when he turned 25 , ny brother got to heavy , nearly gave dad a hernia
Didn't the last episode of the 60s version of Astroboy have him sold into slavery by his father? But he was sold to Dr Elephant. I think the series from the 80s picks up from there.
I love how people try to act like the human-robot conflicts depicted here aren't EXACTLY like the slavery in the US. One could argue that robots aren't human, but people used to believe Africans weren't human :/
If there are beings with sentience of our level, they are about as human as you can get. Minus the destructive impulses.

I used to think Astro Boy was gay. Come to think of it, I still do. Think about it - the small, tight shorts, wears boots, shiny skin (makeup), perfect hair, pretty eyes. It's all there. He's queer!
Thank You! Along with the other early anime such as Amazing Three and Gigantor, this was a big part of my childhood. Watching this, just for a minute, lets me relive those memories......
I was born in 1966, and, clearly in what must have been syndication, I remember watching this in 1969, my oldest recollection of my entire life. Weird to have your oldest memory posted up on YouTube.
@blind51de Actually, the original Japanese theme was instrumental, it was only after the American version added children singing, that the Japanese added words to it themselves, after being so impressed with what was done, for the English version
check out , '' Planet X episode 35 on youtube, it has that ending. I didnt realize there were two endings in english, or maybe they just cut the ending off some of them where it says NBC.
Yes! I remember the same words as you do. 1964. Thanks for posting. What can I do to be like you and become a real Astro Boy. By the way, I'm a Girl!
My God! I haven't seen the intro to the old"Astro Boy"TV cartoons..since WNEW TV(Now WNYW TV)CH.5 in NYC stopped airing them. Thanks Astroboyworld for bringing this back to us all here at You Tube.

i just found out the was a color episode of 1963 Astroboy, #32 Moon Monsters . Its on you tube, one in b/w and the other in full color. I also checked it on Tezuka in English site, yep , there it was ,the only episode made in full color. You have to see this one, a first for all of us who watched the 1963 series in b/w only.
Memories. I used to run home from school to watch this and Prince Planet and Johnny Quest.... well I think Quest was on Saturdays... been a long long time haha.
I went to the see the new film version yesterday. @Cyke101 lol I'd wear that label proudly even if you weren't. :-) Astro was my fave cartoon as a boy. Used to run home from school so I wouldn't miss it.
Down, boy! Would the conservative agenda of "War is noble," "Only lazy people are poor," "Selling anything, no matter how defective, is the American way" and "If he looks different than me, then he's inferior" better for you and your psyche?

I think it comes from the kids of the 80s having those huge spiky hairs and mohawks and dressing like Mad Max and all that, that our parents have become highly fearful of everything.
I sort of remember that from somewhere, He either went to another planet full of giant snails or they came here to earth. The two if not all cartoons had the same dub voices...prince planet. astro boy marine boy.. kimba.. maybe I just imagined it. I believe diferent distribution companies were allowed to do what they wantewd to do with it. I remmember some name like HOOHO productins at the end or something like that.
Astroboy cartoon shows;; 1963 the original b/w cartoon, 1980 a new color Astroboy cartoon with all new episides;;; 2004 a new color Astroboy with all new episodes;; a new Astroboy movie is comming out soon. The 1963 Astroboy was in b/w and never in color, you can get all the original 152 b/w episodes with the original english dubbing on DVD as well as the 1980 and 2004 versions.
Yeah I have been reading the manga lately and I really believe the messages that it portrays aren't usually something directed at the younger audience, but maybe thats for the better. I like it because it has that in it. :) Plus, I have to admit, Astros the cutest little hero I've ever seen~
Astroboy was the first show that showed human rights! the episode about the little boy getting lost in the tunnels and the robots getting together to find him in spite of the humans hatred for all robots made me and my brother believe we were the same as everyone else....no other cartoon back then even touched on such issues back in the 60's
Everyone should demand to see the old episodes (black and white) of Astroboy.
@kellythesinger I wouldn't even say just cartoons, but T.V shows. Honestly, Astro boy was so ahead of it's times in celebral story telling and giving a message that I wonder just how much media really does owe this little rocket powered boy.
@prometheus126 I agree pro, I am obviously older. I have children, I forbid television. I have them watch video tapes of Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Astro Boy, Shirley Temple, Because I want my kids to be like their dad.
@kellythesinger Yeah! I have a couple of old episodes on VHS. They're awesome. Even though the quality kinda sucks. I haven't watched them on DVD yet. I'm hesitant because I know that some old shows lose something in the conversion. Like The George Lopez Show doesn't play Low Rider at the beginning of episodes and allegedly The Greatest American Hero doesn't have all the original music that were played throughout the episodes. Not sure if any of that affects Astro Boy or not though. Haha!
@kellythesinger Plus the one where Dr Elephant's trans-gendered father-in-law was concered about whether his attraction to Astro Boy was pedifial or not.
It seemed like most everything I watched in the early 70's was UHF including this, Ultraman ,Lost in Space Rifleman, The Avengers,to name a few. I lived just outside Buffalo NY then. I'm pretty sure the station was from Canada, they used to break in with something called News capsules,I hated that.
Dear God, the Japanese version of the intro is so much better. However, the translation of the show's name was good. You couldn't call it "Atom" in English.

1964 watching this as a new cartoon,it was great. it was a change from tons of popeye, loonytoons and the stooges. Truly the golden age for kids,im glad i remember this as a new cartoon.
did you know, that when this show was first aired in the US, it had only an orchestrated theme, both in the US and the Japanese? The American team decided to put in words to it, and the Japanese were so impressed with it, that they put it into their opening...
Astroboy is wearing swim trunks that were popular in the 1950s in Japan. The swim trunks with a belt.

This is a shortened version of the original minute-long title sequence. The missing lyrics {by Don Rockwell} in the middle are:
Astro Boy, as you fly,
Strange new worlds you will spy,
Atom-celled, Jet-propelled,
Fighting monsters high in the sky,
Astro Boy, there you go,
Will you fight friend or foe?
Cosmic Ranger, laugh at danger,
Everything is "go", Astro Boy!

Dear God, the Japanese version of the intro is so much better. However, the translation of the show's name was good. You couldn't call it "Atom" in English.

You are an idiot.
NBC did the choir-style intro first, the impressed japanese producers added a cover version to the show soon after.
That's where anime first started putting songs in credits. Even if Atom was the first big anime.
