  • obey is political and if u can pay attention he hints a lot of other stuff in the video

  • I love and when i say i love i mean LOVE the art work and the message behind OBEY. It gets people thinking and opens peoples eyes to start questioning things. They have my full support.

  • It kinda annoys me how he wears his own clothing. Its like wearing a shirt with your face on it.

  • @ccalamuss artists cut their own hair, write their own music; why not wear their own t-shirts? He is representing who he is. He is not wearing a $400 shirt made by some guy.

  • @ccalamuss why would he rep another bs clothing line you dumbass he gets cash everytime someone sees obey and he also gets advertisement so why not get ur own advertisement by wearing ur own shirt and not give some competitors brand free advertisement think first

  • can someone please explain to me what obey is?

  • @1234storkuk

It was an underground graffiti campaign, using stencils of Andre the Giant.

  • Henry Rolllins IS A LIAR!!! :D

  • thumbs up if you hate people writing thumbs up

  • He's put in work, he can talk about his venture without being a sellout...what is he supposed to do, post stickers until he starves to death?

  • @MyTrevorb

Its called Graphic Design for all you ignorant people, and he gets more money than you'll ever see in your entire life. I admired his work its very inspiring for us young Graphic Designers.

  • @27lilone1 You completely missed the point of my comment you virgin. Grow a sack.

  • wow i hate this guy now, he has become what he once was against, and now i hate hate my username

  • @OBEY119 Dude, shut up. He's doing what he's gotta do. I have no doubt in my mind that his stance on art and society hasn't changed a bit since he was 18 and slapping stickers around Rhode Island. Don't be ignorant. Like @MyTrevorb said, is he just supposed to slap stickers and wheatpaste on billboards until he starves to death?

  • thumbs up if you hate gang related tags

  • @2ndXary Your god damn right

  • nearly lost respect for rollins when i saw he had this corporate fuckin schill on his show but the look of hate in his eyes when he figures him out towards the end restored my faith in him

  • Sell out

  • @pinkeraserpet12 is he or are you just too illiterate and dumb to not know that we all follow an inspiration so how much of a sellout is he the fact that hes famous well then everyone in movies, music and art is a sellout huh? think dumbass

  • i made a OBEY skate-bored and there tini and repting

  • he takes himself so serious

  • When did this air?

  • Rollins looked pleased to have Shepard on the show at first, but am I the only one who though he didn't seem pleased with Shepard's answer about commercialization?

  • @kblavie

serious. I was thinking the same thing.

Rollins look like he was personally offended

by the last answer. I think I know why though.

  • @atthespeckofdawn I think Fairey is definitely an intellectual, I found this video searching for him, not Rollins, but he just seemed like a stuttering buffoon in his answer. With Rollins' own very strong opinions on consumerism and commercialism, I think he really botched his answer, and frankly, appeared uneducated, or at least unsure of his stance, on the subject. Especially after his "camel cigarettes" remark, Rollins looks like he's just rolling his eyes at the whole answer

  • check the new wall painting ARABIC VEGAS by 1905 on my profile

  • When did you do this interview?

  • You see Henry's expression, he looks pissed near the end there...

  • He was never a graffiti artist, he's a complete sellout

  • @PtAltmVansanTarr apperently youve never seen exit though the gift shop he was a graffiti artist you dumbshit

  • i thought you were graffiti artist

  • these cocksuckers need to actually utilize creativity, as opposed to taking pre-conceived images or artworks...do not show me a manipulated real person's face...do not show me someone's artwork with a twist...put down the spray paint and actually create a genuine work of art, fags

  • @Hellzyead this upsets me seriously.... the Mona Lisa ? not a genuine work of art? you may want to "rethink" your comment a little bit. IN OTHER WORDS BE MORE GENUINE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE REAL ARTISTS AND MAKE ALOT OF MONEY AT IT!!!! SHYT FOR BRAINS IS YOUR PROBLEM.

  • @ryansgonewayward1 What the hell are you babbling about? Re-read my comment and piss off. Stay off the crack too.

  • @Hellzyead YEP ...I RE-READ IT...my comment sticks. and i quote from you "hese cocksuckers need to actually utilize creativity, as opposed to taking pre-conceived images or artworks...do not show me a manipulated real person's face." THE MONA LISA WAS A PRE-CONCEVIED IMAGE AND IS A MANIPULATED REAL PERSONS FACE.....so before you go off and shyt out of your mouth again shove some toilet paper in that mouth of yours. *wow your breath sticks*

  • @Hellzyead dude, fuck you id like to see you be successful with graffiti. lets see you do another mona lisa

  • @griltz1

    Shut up.

  • @griltz1, You have no clue

  • @griltz1 Whoa dude....his whole OBEY thing is more or less a sarcastic thing LOL

  • @griltz1 thats fucked up dude... thats totally not fucking true... you could look at pretty much anything and say its satanic for whatever dumbass reason. i believe in jesus and stuff but so does shepard fairey...

  • totally not true? You can believe in Jesus and not have him in your heart and have accepted him, Hitler even proposed to be a Christian, If you look into the Illuminati and how they work they subliminally put things into your mind without you knowing. He said he is trying to get you to look at it and look at his artwork that is obviously new age Illuminati influenced. Ignorance comes when one supposes they already have the truth. Open your eyes and look within!

  • Comment removed

  • @griltz1 look within what? your fucking asshole to shed some light on your vagina? fuck you, shepard fairey is not part of the illuminati.

  • @griltz1 you are such a fanny go suck hitlers gay dick you facist fag

  • @rudepenis69 hows banksy any less of a sell out?

hes making a living doing what he loves and gets to trow in a message while doing that. whats wrong with that?

  • Voices of Black

  • itd be nice if the "movement he pioneered" was his own movement. i can copy and paste images too..

  • He's a plagiarist, it doesn't take creativity to steal from other artists. Wake up people! They aren't even his own ideas!

  • He's a plagiarist, it doesn't take creativity to steal images from other artists. Wake up! They aren't even his own ideas.

  • That's what I wanna look like when I'm 40! holy shit, he looks like he is in his 20's!

  • any idea what an

"OBEY WITH CAUTION" sighned print is worth

  • does he use stencles r stickers

  • @dannypollard12 Both

  • Loving his work!

Why not make some money on the way?

  • love shepp

  • TAZ OK WE GET SOOO FUCK OFF

  • my biggest issue with Mr. Fairey is his Obama "HOPE" poster. i am not against the message, i like the image, and i have nothing against the poster. what i have an issue with it is that his art before Obama's candidacy was all about questioning authority he even said it himself "obey what? obey who?" when the image was making it's way around, it was a total "fuck you" to his previous messages.

  • the worst part is he doesn't call himself a sellout. it's one thing to say "if i don't sell this, i have no money, that means no food" but it's another to have over 20 employees, and a huge show that shows all his past work next to the new work. sure it's a retrospective, but don't say your a sellout when you change the message of your art to correspond with someone who could change things a little more to what you want

  • and by the way, i did post the "HOPE" poster around the city. i was 16 and couldn't vote, so should that be a reason to rub it in the nose of everyone who can vote to vote...yes. i am anarchist, i don't choose sides with who should rule the country i live in...but if someone next to me has the power to change when i don't...you bet your sweet ass i will wave it in there face on who the obvious pick is. i didn't sell out my ideas for a person, i just wanted it to be herd that i am pissed off

  • 1. I didn't know in the U.S., you have to obey your presidential candidate or even the president.

    2. His works had always been art itself, about the power of an IMAGE.

  • 1. your right, we don't HAVE to obey our president, but, that is because there are so many issues, that he could controdict himself. that is beside the point

    2. yes, it's the power of the image that makes the statement, but how can you post an image with a powerful "anti-establishment" message, than for personal reasons come out with another strong composition with a message 180 degrees different from the original message and not call your self a sellout

  • i bet you secretly his favorite book/film is george orwells 1984, im sure most of his ideas for OBEY came from the roots of this film, big brother, is watching, !

  • @tazmon122

I think the exact same thing. he likes to pretend his against big governemnt and corporate control but as he's gotten older (and richer) he's changed his tone quite a bit.

  • @tazmon122 ummm.. his original intention was simply to help obama campaign against mccain, you know. not to become obama's poster boy... as a self-proclaimed anarchist, i'm sure you weren't that hot for mccain at the time either. or?

  • @mundusabsurdus i'm not hot on either side...i think if every single person were to know and respect moral good (determined by basic principle) than cut out government all together, and people will carry on...that's true anarchy. i don't think his intentions were so simple...in this day in age, you can't be so politically aware, and determined to look at things so simply.

  • @tazmon122 maybe not... i'm not from the US and have little knowledge of Fairey's actual level of political awareness apart from the street art "mission". i completely agree with you on the nature of true anarchy, though, wish i'd live long enough to see that happen.

  • @mundusabsurdus you don't need to be in the US to learn about stuff...just do some research...real anarchy starts with you. you need to spread it around, everyone has to be willing, and knowledgeable of an idea before it can be truly achieved (religion is blind faith, and with all the extremist, and idiots who do certain idiotic acts in the name of their religion...such as the guy who wanted to burn the Curran...or members of the tea party, or rush...ext. no knowledge doesn't work)

  • @tazmon122 well of course not, to learn about "stuff" you might be better of here - this was in context of Fairey's motives and intentions. Kinda tough research subject though, if you can't base your conclusions on his actions and / or expressed views (in other words, assume he's lying). & Anarchist ideals aside, there IS a certain simpleness in the two-party system, at least when observed from a country very different political structure. And this doesn't mean it's not complex as hell, too.

  • @mundusabsurdus it's not a 2 party system, it's 2 main party system...it's a democratic republic so the people vote on representatives...they don't have to be within one of the 2 main parties to be elected. whatever...it's messy. those who are creating the mess are the politicians, and those who have been charged with the clean up are the people. shepherd works in tandem, yet claims to be with the people. it's how the mess makers get everything messy.

  • @tazmon122 well yes, i meant to say "two-main-party-system" if that makes a difference for you in this context... but i still maintain shepard's siding with obama during the campaign could be seen as a kind of damage control (not necessarily succesful, it seems, the way obama's regime is going... but that's hindsight) rather than applauding the system. he actually IS encouraging people to reclaim public space, question authority etc. even if he isn't your perfect anarchist.

  • @mundusabsurdus your right, he's a great artist...but i get confused when someone creates a globally known, copied, borrowed, and stolen campaign that is designed to question everything, and have every viewer question everything (especially politically) AND THEN tell it's audience that one man doesn't need to be questioned, no, he should get respect...shepherd is the same as every hipster/punk/artist that i've met from RISD...stuck up, and a hypocrite

  • @tazmon122 maybe so. and i agree with you, it sure is opportunistic to "play both sides" like he does... but i also get the feeling that while he's charismatic, verbal and kinda smart, perhaps in the end he isn't that intelligent? i mean, great graphic skill for sure, but all these propaganda posters with imagery like flowers coming out of gun barrels... obama = hope... strikes me as naivete more than anything else.

  • porfavor que alguien lo traduzca !!!

  • We all know the steamy underbelly of F's continual usage of regurgitated art from the greats of the past. F. states that he has been arrested over a dozen times and goes on to explain that being arrested is part of street art... really? Come on now. F, I think, puts himself out there to purposely be seen/ caught so in his next interview he can up the number. It would just be refreshing to hear the icon of todays pop-art-icon give credit when credit is due.

  • fart on my tits

  • sure...

  • Its ironic that he says that he at first his art was questioned because he wasn't trying to sell anything and it wasn't apart of anything besides his own imagery or trying to sell something but now it has become completely for advertising and trying to sell his work and for that I believe that Shepard Fairey has sold out because he has gone against exactly what he started.

  • youre the smartest 13 year old in the room. feed yourself with your art

  • I'm older than that.

  • no Shepard Fairey is still himself. You see I bet Shepard Fairey also wanted to bring influences to people and so he didn't sell out. people just started representing him and expressing their belief by wearing obey propaganda. The thing i hate though is how alot of people and kids wear obey and don't know sh*t about it. they dont even know who Shepard Fairey is. And those people have made obey go mainstream and now you see Obey at Zumiez. That just kills what obey is...

  • Okay, thats true, but still he is still putting his stuff up to not only influence people but as an entrepenorial stand point, which goes against himself, I like Obey and Shepard's Art but I do think he sold out. I also don't agree with his political stand points, but thats besides the point.

  • @kingcoopa2323 sold out ? hes a true graff head got up everywhere and anywhere, he needs to pay bills like anyone else. life is tough. he still busts illegal work when he can. i wouldnt be so quick to bash a true Graffiti artist like him when your guna be no where near remembered like he will be

  • @applecri5p First off Graff isn't about being remembered its about creating your art in your style (Shepard Fairey does). If you look at the history of Shepard Fairey's work he even says that he never into it as graffiti, he got into it as a way to spread his "propaganda" around, he is an amazing artist. The new Obama stuff has just pissed me off as one who supports his work. I apologize if I didn't make myself clear.

  • He influenced me to take up art.

  • f--k you fools graffiti has a culture deeper than anything you are a part of. Shepard Fairey has come up with his own style his own brand, he is more than an artist he is an innovator! much love from salt lake shepard!!!!

  • @novakied Yo im fron slc too bro.

  • @novakied nope, he copies alot of shit from other propaganda, not very creative, still more about the message tho, jus not as original as i tho;ught he was.

  • dope. Get obey and many more on karmaloop(dot)com. Get an extra 20% off with rep code DN37568. Tell your friends too, fresh clothes.

  • WOW. i am a print maker conceptual and political. my teacher compared me to shepard. i am honoured.

  • Try 39.

  • @mikeofcetacea Try 9001

  • all you haters are a bunch of fags! this dudes a legend

  • you can tell shepard is so excited to meet henry

  • wat did andre do?

  • I saw that all his stuff is plagerized.

  • No....its not plagiarism. It's appropriation it's kinda a play on copy right and stuff using something that already exists to create something else. Plagiarism isn't a word you should use lightly...there is a difference between appropriation and plagiarism...you used look up the two before you make such a comment.

  • i never knew the obey pic was andre the giant

    :]]

  • its buket not bucket

  • ghost da shit!

  • Anyone saying that Fairey is a plagiarist think about this phrase.. 'reinterpretation is the greatest form of flattery' in the art world, originality is an elitist concept because 'originality' leads to kids being holier than thou about everything. Plus, I'd like to see one of you guys come up with something 'original'

  • oh man fix the spelling please ~ it's fairey not fairy
