I really like the anime. It's like the story of Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo," but the format is from Stoker's "Dracula." I do wish they had stuck to the ending, though. Wasn't the whole point of the novel that Dantès had been broken beyond any redemption?

At first, I found this song to be so corny and silly... but the more I listened to it, and the more I watched the anime, the more I grew to love it. </3 call me a sap, this song breaks my heart.
I also was startled at the inclusion of mecha in episode 18, but was pleasantly surprised at how well it was pulled off. They used mecha with the same dignity and seriousness that people in the past would have used with sabres and pistols. In the future, we use robots instead of guns and swords for duels. It's normal to them and they treat it as such. And the episode itself, especially the second half, was something special.
@AvatarYoda I liked the lack of bean swords and laser cannons. They may use that in their military use, but these guys are nobility; they're probably trying to keep that classic dignity combined with the battle armor that they were trained with. It was a nice touch and I'm happy that they didn't have a bunch of "we're in robots" kind of scenes. It was treated as any old suit of armor.

one of the best openings for sure, really awesome, but the problem is the anime which was epic until episode 17 or so and then the director raped the plot and inserted giant robots. in the original story albert is the count's son and they do get to fight and so on. but until that point the anime is breathtaking and ending and opening fit perfectly
I agree with the robots part thingy you mentioned, it was going so, so well until that part... but you know, just a clarification, cause I'm OBSESSED with the novel, in the book Albert is NOT Edmond's son, and there is not fight between them, you probably saw the 2002 movie which completely destroyed the story! :p so I had to clarify that because it was obscene for me :p
@CountessOfPluto can't have a japanese tale without the addition of mechs, you just have to accept that..its a guy thing, you wouldn't understand. it doesn't detract from the legitimacy of the story. but as far as adaptations i love the original as well, but they're NEVER as good as the book. the same can be said about EVERY PIECE OF LITERATURE EVER, ass. as far as capturing the heart of the tale, the 2002 movie did wonderfully, & is a great film. being elitist only limits your experiences.

For me the 2002 movie did not capture the heart of the tale at all, I liked the acting and Jim Caviezel was great for the role, but they butchered the story completely. It is very very hard to make a movie adaptation of that book because it's long and there's so many characters, but if you can't pull it off then don't destroy the ending to make it work with your movie. There is a reason why the book ends like that.
