  • 11 PEOPLE NEED HEARING AIDS

  • A tour de force .. there ain't no body but the Master can do it like that!!!

  • thanks... I'm breaking my hands :-)

  • @Modgie100 wtf lol

  • The cute detail in this is the song isnt by Ellmore James. The original is from around 1940 by Tampa Red, altho the version Eric covers is done in the style of Ellmore, the lyrics themselves are Tampa's tho.

  • Great song, but I'd have to say the Grateful Dead played it sooo much better. Pigpen on vocals and Jerry on guitar---check it out.----cannot believe not on person even mentioned Dead since they played it many times ('72 and earlier)

  • @BIODTLOTHER1terrapin prolly because the dead cant play the blues, the last thing i want to hear is a bunch of hippies singing a song stolen from a guy who lived nothing but hard times his entire life

  • @chalftits when pigpen was around he always sang the blues----you could at least give it a chance before you judge---the dead where always changing the way they played songs---songs were never played the same way. Anyway their version of "It Hurts Me Too" is very bluesy.

  • @chalftits i think it preserves the music when people play it all the time....that's respect....ouit being a cry baby!

  • @BIODTLOTHER1terrapin I gotta agree with you there, Pigpen wailed those vocals and you felt the blues in your toes.

  • @halcyonsgs GOD LOVE PIG PEN, I love when he sang, and god he could play the harp.

  • Wasn't it written by Tampa Red?

  • Actually Elmore James did not write this song....check out Tampa Red, Bluebird label, Chicago. 1932. 'When things go wrong'.....not sure why they credit this to Elmore James.

  • check another version from Keb' Mo'......

  • elmore usually played slide in open D on a really cheap acoustice like a kay with a single coil in the sound hole and low wattage amp with everything cranked on 10, and a slide made out of aluminum . he used the covers that they used on the old t.v. tubes.

  • @zfish1995 agreed, voice too actually

  • Great Slide... Just so damn sweet.

  • Great tone from Eric's guitar and the band swings beautifully, very close to Elmore's Fire recordings with Homesick James on bass.

  • ha. clapton talks smack lol. he's one of the best!

  • Elmore James Tone is totally distorted but very good distortion though, so EC could be wrong there..

  • 1:20 Dr. House with guitar :D

  • to me as a guitarist I listen to Clapton's early blues covers for his great gravelly vocals.

  • @paulme999 ...and you my friend need a hearing aide.

  • @paulme999 im sorry that the blues is over your head

  • Is that a Gibson Byrdland he is playing there?

  • @ukchris64 Yeah, he chose it to replicate Chuck Berry, I heard it's a really rare one because it has P90s on it.

  • Eric sounds great here. I'd agree with those who say he can sound tiresome at times. But he sings here with conviction, and the song fits his vocal range. I like the tone he gets on slide here as well. His brief discussion about how he chose to go in a different direction from Elmore for the recording of this song was interesting. His guitar actually sounds to me somewhat reiniscent of Jeremy Spencer's - a huge Elmore James fan - on early Fleetwood Mac recordings.

  • Way to cop out:)

  • Written by Tampa Red. Popularized by Elmore James.*

  • I really hate the sound of that rhythym guitar behind him, it sounds terrible lol

  • Yeah not a bad version, but I agree Jeremy Spencer pulls off Elmore much better than Clapton, voice and six-string.

  • does anybody know what movie this is from??

  • I love how even when he doesn't play a strat he doesn't use single coil pickups.

  • @Antonovich74 That's single coils, p-90. Sad but true.

  • It wasn't written by Elmore James - Tampa Red Recorded it in 1940 and its based on a much earlier song. Nice slide work. Check out Tampa Red's version - he's playing a guitar with an action you could slice cheese on and its is pretty amazing...

  • 2 TELL ALL EVERTHING CLAPTON PICKED UP ON THE WAY WAS GOOD & HE MADE IT GREAT ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

  • You know what is underrated about Eric Clapton? His voice. He is a RIDICULOUS guitar player, but I think his voice is about half of what I really love about him. You know, instantly, that he feels everything he's singing.

  • @imournhim

You mean ridiculous as in...ridiculously good ...I assume ?

  • Good blues is good for everything

  • 2700 of the views must be me!

  • damn his voice is good! and he play the guitar like a god

  • Eric Clapton having fun?? I was never saw this ahahahaha

    Anyway..the best guitarrist EVER!

  • I like when he pushes his voice cords like this, sounds great!

  • C'est vraiment dur de maitriser le Bottle neck à ce niveau ! J'adore la chanson

  • fuck nothing like a fat ass hollow-body for roaring slide tone

  • I love this song, this guitar, and this man! He is incredible!

  • Though EC is one of my favorite gun slingers, snakehips81 is right about EC's mischaracterization of EJ's playing style. EJ is KNOWN for attacking a lot of his songs. Not everyone can do that as sucessfully as EJ, but then, there's only one Elmore James. FYI the best song ever played on this planet is Elmore James's MADISON BLUES......don't even try to argue that....gotta go play it right now.

  • @buzzardbait99

    Amen bro !

  • awesome! EC does Elmore James. Real nice - thanks.

  • I don't agree with Clapton's comments mostly - he says Elmore's sound was quite clean and not loud etc

    I think that is nonesense.

However, he does a very good job playing the tune despite the band being a bit "cabaret" and in general, a bit "safe" rather than gelling together and making the tune much more organic, with feel to it.

  • tampa red actually wrote this

  • Yo Eric, now i dont feel like thailand.... hehehe..

  • What kind of guitar is he playing? I know it's a Gibson

  • A gibson Byrdland

  • Is he white black? :-)

  • @OlegDjan77 LOL What do you mean?

  • @magnum9987 usually white people don't have this deeeep blues feeling...

  • @OlegDjan77 Its not about color, its upbringing.

  • @magnum9987 Yeah, some black family upbringing... :-)))))

  • OMG, just great. I love Eric

  • CLAPTON>GOD!

  • Clapton is just too awesome!!

  • Will do! Thanks!

  • This is my ALL-TIME, favorite Blues Song! I like Elmore's original but, Eric's is just AWESOME!

  • dvd????????????

  • I supported Eric Clapton on his Scandinavian tour with a slot of my own songs. The whole experience was amazing. Watching him at close range is electrifying. I am so proud to have been his supporting act.

  • YOU ARE A LUCKY MAN!!!!!!

  • @franrayamusic What did you play? Spoons....

  • Love the sound on the rhythm guitar!

  • Damn, the men is so good, is there a better gitarist/singer, don't think so!!!

  • A good friend sent this song to me cuz going through a difficult break up. He was a spineless coward and jst stopped calling or taking my calls w/NO explanation NOTHING! These words fit all too well. I have been a Eric fan for a very long time:)

  • Eric Clapton is absolutely amazing! This is one of my favorite songs by him.

  • Nice slide guitar playing by Eric.

  • Love u so much!!

    Your Blues tooooooooooo!!

  • She's married to an abuser but foolin' around with someone else.

    Oy Vay!!

    Kingsuj(thanks Eric)

  • umm...this actually wasn't originally an elmore james tune. the earliest i've heard it was done by tampa red--same lyrics and all, just 20+ years earlier!

  • Indeed, glad someone pointed that out!!!

  • This is a clip from a TV programme of the final rehearsals for the From the Cradle tour broadcast on BBC2 (UK). I saw him at Sheffield in the UK on that tour - awesome old school blues and a welcome change from the Phil Collins produced commercial shit Clapton had been putting out for years before going back to real blues.

I've still got a recording of it on VHS - must get it transferred to DVD before I wear out the tape.

  • This is my ALL-Time, Favorite Eric Clapton song. And before anyone chimes in....yes, I know it's actually an Elmore James Song. I just like Eric's version a lot.

  • what kinda gibson is he playing ....

  • 1950's Gibson Byrdland Blonde :D

  • Comment removed

  • open e

  • what tuning is this in?

  • open C#, silly

  • It IS Open C# (or Db if you prefer). Tuned like an open E chord, but everything is 3 half steps lower. Really makes those tubes shake, baby!!

  • I must agree that it's no the tue elmore sound because with exception of peter green no one can get close but it sounds like the man if he would have disovered distortion or met with Jimmy Hendrix in his high days

  • what the fuck do you agree with? he says it in the begining its. there is nothing to dispute here

  • didn't elmore plug an acoustic guitar into his amp, and that, other than him being elmore, was what made his distortion so different?

  • no, god got owned in a miniature version of soccer. therefore, it doesnt even matter.

  • he should probably just give up guitar and play table football.

  • can ya play it..ehh didnt think sooo

  • @stringslayer you fail at having good taste

  • @stringslayer hey-foseball is no joke;)

  • @stringslayer and give me that Gibson first!

  • @stringslayer yeah he'll do one day... for now he's one of the best-payed old musician in the world...

  • he plays the closest to elmore i've seen EVER....

  • check out the version Clapton did with Duane Allman on the Layla album

  • @zfish1995 And you've seen Peter Green? Cause he was pretty good at it too..

  • @zfish1995 I'm not a big fan of Clapton but I'll admit this is a very good cover of Elmore. I would say that Jeremy Spencer of early Fleetwood Mac was the only guitarist who could replicate Elmore's technique.

  • @zfish1995 thanks that you stated that. most folks on here tend to bash clapton, for whatever reason. but he made so much possible for the blues and remained modest and classy.

  • @thailow117 so true my friend! Clapton is GOD! :D

  • @thailow117 true that Eric Clapton helped through his rock stardom to put Blues in the mainstream...but many overlook the fact that Eric is a rock star and his Blues style is generic and mediocre at best.

  • @MrDaemonB hmm, I'm back and forth on this one :-) of course he is no kid ramos or corey harris or whoever, but then yes: he is a rockstar, no revivalist, his blues may be generic but it works.

plus he has done a ridiculous amount of work and written/recorded some of the best known songs in the world. so, I believe he's done sth right sometime.

  • @MrDaemonB I'll agree there are artists better at some faces of being a blues musician then Clapton is, Clapton however combines sweet guitarplay with heartfelt lyrics he puts his soul into. This to a true guitarist is rare. In my oppinion Eric is one of my favorites to ever have done it, regardless of being the best or not.

  • @MrDaemonB check out have you ever loved a woman live from hyde park - that is not mediocre. i should add that clapton started as a blues guitarist then like most others took it into rock but has headed back. you cant be generic and mediocre if buddy guy and bb king amongst others rate you.

  • @MrDaemonB ,,, generic and mediocre...well I have heard it all..

  • @zfish1995 Agree!

  • Yeah! Great!

  • =) i like it!!

  • smack on no question, great blues voice acquired along the years!! thanks for posting you get the flavour of the rooms acoustics too thrown in.

  • an ass hole is better than you

  • Clapton is god

    ^ and hendrix

  • Nice!

  • wow sounds just like elmore to me, thought this was a song with Tampa Red but i guess i was wrong, just as good anyway :D

  • No, you are right. It is a Tampa Red song. But Elmore James did a great version of it.

  • clapton is god

  • I think I heard that somewhere before....

  • yeah, I think this is originally by Keb Mo...but, I could be wrong...and I usually am..lol

  • It is orignally by Elmore James :)

Keb Mo did it aswell, but to my oppinion it is a weak performance comparing to Elmore's performance.

  • Tampa Red....

  • ya its originally by tampa red and then elmore james ripped him off and wrote new lyrics for the verse, john lee hooker did that too

  • @MysteryHunterz It was NOT written by Elmore James. It was written by Tampa Red. It was beautifully covered by Elmore James though.

  • @untroubled Oh. Well then Tampa Red was goood. Great song.

  • Didn't know he played the slide

  • just llike playing guirtar lol

  • err.. Eric no sloutch...but even I could sound pretty decent in front of that band - wow the drummer, great feel

  • Clapton is god

  • Hendrix is god

  • The legend sings !

  • Great song. Clapton playing tribute to another of the guitar greats from the past that are no longer with us. Go out and buy the DVD "Nothing But The Blues" Eric Clapton. 30 terrific songs where Clapton pays tribute to those who if it were not for them, then there would be no Clapton, Page, Vaughn, Allman, Kossoff........

  • clapton rules

  • ya looks like something ted nugent would play

  • Is that an L-5 he's playing?

  • yes, it is

  • No, Its a Byrdland. You can tell by the tail piece.

  • this is acutally written by big bill broonzy known as when things go wrong(it hurts me too) before elmore james recorded it. also was recorded by tampa red in the early 40's. the slide version is particularly associated with elmore james

  • Dudes! Close your eyes and hear what's really important. You'll be pleased with the the audio and understand the visual is insignificant by comparison.

  • i just bought an ES-125 with 2 P-90s, i'm so excited now, just went to this vid to remind me how good they can sound :D

  • oh man they sound SO thick you're in for a bitchin tone!

  • well fair nuff its a nice guitar but this is a byrdland pal

  • Who is the freakin' pinhead that filmed this, cutting to the keyboards and drums during Eric's solo?!

  • No fucking shit -- that infuriates me. They do that on other Clapton vids during a solo -- what the fuck are they thinking!!!!!

  • Probably because EC turned his back to the camera. Unless you like looking at his ass, they had to change the shot. They managed to get a camera on him between a couple of cymbal stands, but it wasn't a good shot, so they moved it around. Makes sense to me.

  • There are only a handfull of musicians that I can listen to in mixed company unless they feel the music. Eric Clapton, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix,Danny Gatton, and Ray Charles.

  • ohh oohh oohh my god.. sorry i mean clapton, jesus fucking christ hes good

  • Great Eric.Great.

  • firt time i ever saw clapton use slide...

  • its a real treat. I love his acoustic slide playing.

  • I'm trying to verify (in my head) if this song is from "From the Cradle," which I found used a couple months ago-- excellent blues album; my favorite song (can't remember the title) has the lines, "I've been 'cused of children, ain't nary one of mine;" and "I've been 'cused of forgery, I can't even sign my name. . " (Sorry, those two selections don't even rhyme). It reminds me of how he keeps coming up with examples of dysfunction in "Broken Down" (different album).

  • Note: I know that Clapton wrote only the latter song, "Broken Down," or at least I believe he did.

  • Third Degree by Eddie Boyd

  • Yeah, you're right - I finally looked at the CD cover (it went straight from being unwrapped into the car).

  • Its called "Third Degree".

    Long live the Blues!!

  • song you are talking about is third degree, try listening to that selection by mountain, it's pretty good the way they did it too

  • yeah cool

  • one thing im sur we will agree on is dat its an amazing so im so gonna play this one live hope it goes down well, alto i couldn care less cause i ab love it!! lol

  • ok got it now it is in a# but play it in standered tuning it sound better!!!fingers crossed lol

  • no actually dat dosn sound exactly wright my head is wreaked tryin to find this

  • what is this Db open tuning?

  • this is in A#,he prob has it tuned up half step raised strings and plays in the A position, thats how i play it.

  • Wha? This version is in Db. Check it.

  • ur actually right i was so caught up in different tunings i never saw the obvious! silly me sorry bout that, i was going by wha the tabs on d net wer sayin(never again) wud u believe in the past hour i tried 3 diff tunings u had me thinkin it was in Db open tunning wen wot i think u ment was Db standered tunning their 2 totally different tunings, and i played it in the c# position was kind ok but still off, but yeah fair play never opened my eyes to the simple things!! doh!!!!

  • yea well I still think he's in some open tuning maybe but I'm just too lazy to figure it out right now!! At least you can play it:-p

  • the drummer at the end of the second solo makes a big mistake on the brak lol

  • ???

  • cmuray- your nuts- a big mistake would be to fall out of tempo while playing a fill or just falling out of tempo in a horrible way- at worst he plays a note on the side tom that doesn't need to be there or he wanted it to be somewhere else- it's still in tempo- ALL good and great musicians make mistakes- it's what they do after the mistake that counts.

  • he falled right on time but the compass wasnt like that and his intention was to play it like it was written u can notest, dont defend what u cannot fix. hey it was a comment, not an insult. im not nuts and if u are concient u can admit that

  • You called it a BIG mistake-it aint- your nuts.

  • fantastic!!

  • listen to Keb Mo's rendition of this song. He plays harmonica almost better than you plays guitar or sings. Simply Stunning!
