They went back to Japan safely after disarmed by Chinese army. If Japanese soldiers had killed many Chinese citizens on purpose during WW2, disarmed Japanese soldiers would have been killed out by Chinese citizens. I'm sure Chinese government has been concealing CCP's brutal acts by loudly claiming that Japanese army killed a lot of innocent citizens.

The Chinese Nationalists Party was led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek . He made huge fortress in Shanghai in 1936. General Alexander von Falkenhausen of Nazis taught Chiang how to make the fortress. Chiang's strategy was to kill working Japanese people in Shanghai in 1937, and was to lure main Japanese army into Shanghai from Japan.
