Looks cool but why are you skimming the bacteria and nutrients from your refugium before they return back to your tank? Now it's just a sump. Try puting the skimmer as a first chamber then the refugium in the second and then the return.
I'm sick in tired of my rsm 130 skimmer and want to add a sump just like you. But i really dont know if it makes a difference how high the departments should be etc . I need help lol.
I'm lookin in to buy a Schuran Jetskim 120 and a little 60 liter tank as sump
Great vid...Looks like you have a marineland heater. Google marineland heater recalls there's a form you can fill out to get a refund. They have been known to explode cracking glass. If that were to happen in your sump there would be horrible results. Very nice looking tank btw.
awesome refuge. simple does the trick. doing the same to mine now. 3 chambers just like urs . questiin what size is ur main tank and are there any flooding issues if the power goes out by chance?
Nice set up man. But a quick question. What are the benefits of a refuge over a trickle with bio balls? I'm getting ready to set up a mini reef and was planning on using a wet dry with bio balls, but have been doing a lot of research and was just wondering if a refuge would be better for my application. Any input would be greatly appriciated, Thanks a lot.
@richtoker There are lots of benefits to having a fuge... the macro algae will use up the nutrients to avoid nuisance algae from growing in your display tank and it's also a great breeding ground for copepods/amphepods.
@KingBonacci I worked at a PetSmart distribution center for two years and I don't believe I've ever seen a filter sock in our inventory... try your LFS..
@MrMattNice haha it would be awesome if you can make a tut or an explanation on how you make it because in a few weeks ill be planning to do the same with my 20 fw tank
nice set up. . .my sump is almost the same design and size than yours .. so what light would be appropriate for my refugium in the middle section. . .please answer i really need to know''
nice....but I'd have to ask the same question.....about skimming the copepods, etc. out before they have a chance to reach the main display...If the skimmer was in the water returning FROM tank, and THAT water then emptied into the refugium chamber, the life that would normally be returning to the tank wouldn't be lost to the skimmer...and no KingBonacci, it wouldn't...again....nice though
i dont think it is a good idea to have the protien skimmer after the refugium, you are skimming off a lot of the benifits (copepods, etc.) of the refugium
u can use gel super glue to make the bubble trap and it works fine once it is cured it is completely reef safe

what you have in that bag hanging on the pvc?
karlek110188 1 year ago
@karlek110188 It's a filter sock or called a micron bag. The water flows through it filtering out stuff.

@karlek110188 I just use the stock hood light that came with the tank, I was told that would be just fine enough to grow macro algae.

Are you not putting plants in refugium

@kbrown5992 wouldn't the skimmer being in the system in general do the same thing?
