@JasonJudas Incubus? No! Mars Volta is more punk driven with a lot of spanish influence and transitional material to call themselves a progressive rock band. Incubus? Again, I don't see the influence! They're more of a reggae meets punk rock band like Red Hot Chilli Peppers. To me, Karnivool has a lot of Tool influence, that and a lot of the thematic material they use marks a turning point for progressive rock and rock in general.

Keep in mind I had only heard this song and was talking about this song when I posted.

Yeah I see the Tool influence, but it's not as big as the Volta. Listen to the drummer. Def Mastodon influence there too. I mentioned Incubus because of the vocal melodies and the straight(er) rock groove. I love Tool but they would never write a chorus hook like that. Tool is like an intricate tapestry. Karnivool is more like a wolf on an acid trip. They're both beautiful.

@skoottar AMEN to that! There are so many other bands like Porcupine Tree, Isis, Mastodon ect...getting the recognition that should really be going to Karnivool. Its direct and makes a point, like Tool. Sure, the creative thing was to use ool in their band name and spell it with a K, but I'd rather go to a Karnivool concert than listen bands that lull me into a state of R.E.M. sleep. I wasn't diggin the screaming from Isis, but that component is best suited for a band like Deftones.

Nah man, actually I spoke to Drew he said Open Dm and now that I look at the videos now, you can see Drew playing the 2nd fret meaning a E note, which is what the starting riff is. Also I've heard that in most songs off Sound Awake, Drew plays Open Dm (D A D F A D) while Hoss just plays normal. lol Genius.
