@Sirflatch Thanks dude I definitely agree about the preamp, however so far out of the ones I've tried in my price range (new or used), this old Soundcraftsmen has been the most natural sounding. I've tried an older Bryston, Rotel, NAD and Perreaux. So far this one is the keeper :) I will see about the CES but I cant promise anything due to lack of time.
@svtcontour Awwwe C'mon man make the time!!! It will be running for 3 days!!! :o) I have a very nice Yamaha C65 that U can have if U want 2 try it out, very natural sounding!!
@Sirflatch Hmmm well I'll have to see, is it ok the weekend or weekday. I guess I can look it up. If its the weekday, I'm totally out due to work :( Also thanks about the Yamaha :) I did try a Yamaha long ago and it was nice too. Some natural sound preamp or something like that. In the end I stuck with this preamp. The one I thought was second for me was the NAD believe it or not. The Bryston was the worst of the bunch that I tried. @musicman195959 Thank you :) I really fell in love with the red color as well. Its very well finish with a high gloss. For the money, I think you cant beat the little Usher S520 speakers.
@Jacksongla Sorry for the late response but thank you for the compliment on the stereo. Its quite modest and mostly everything was purchased used to keep cost down. Its been a labor of love and patience :)
There is a hum or some kind of white noise that is present in the audio. It is impossible to put this up on YouTube and expect that it serves an example of high quality audio. Personally I think it sounds horrible and it has too much room sound to make any clear judgment about cable.... Who cares in this case since all we are hearing is the hum of the room sound.
just dont get the logic in going very crazy on interconnects and speaker cables,everything in moderation. not that i'm cheap,mid you,but i think some of the cable upgrade fundage could be better served towards component or cartridge improvement.love the watermark album,hope those monitors are not too taxed when that nasty organ kicks in!
@DAVEDOUGHY Ya after making my cables (RCA and speaker) I've learned through some blind listening tests that cabling is not as critical as some people say it is. As long as the cables are good enough, then all is good. No super fancy cables needed. Oh well :)
The little monitors actually did ok because its a fairly small room so I was not driving them very hard. Since this video, I've added two subwoofers that I made and now I have zero problem with deep or strong organ notes :)
@nazanruzie Ya it gets pretty damn crazy. I guess in the end if it makes people happy spending money, its fine but the companiess that sell those cables and make outlandish statements about them just make me sick. Many of the claims are outright BS! LOL.
@player1CR I'd say they are about 6 feet apart and because the size of the room is only a 10x12, I'm only sitting back about 7 feet so given that its a close listening distance, its not too bad. If I was further back, then it probably would be a bit too close.
@craneywatch Well its funny, since making my own cables, I did a blind listening test and to my surprise, the short dollar store cables and the 'good' ones I made sounded the same to me. I had a buddy swap cables while the volume level was set in the same position and yup, couldnt tell things apart. The only time things were audibily different were on a 20 foot pair of dollar store RCA cables - so the only thing I can conclude is that audio cables of normal lengths all sound similar to me :(
@svtcontour You're right. There have been studies showing speaker cables make NO difference except at long distances because of noise. Even moderately priced cables work 100% fine.
I believe I have the same speaker stands used when my B&W 705s. Well, at least they look similar. Never did fill the stands. Was thinking about using shotgun pellets, not sand.
Very nice and neat setup. I'm glad you are enjoying it. For those that are giving you grief, it's just the jealousness coming out. What one hears is subjective. As long as you enjoy it, that's what counts. Check out my stereo. This is a very time consuming and pocket emptying hobby we got here.
@RayPaganJr Thank you. I agree. Hearing is as subjective, if not more than sight because the brain and imagination get more involved. I definitely do enjoy the hobby and seeing your video, I can tell you're passionate about your music as well. Good stuff :)
glass and metal low fi stand....tut tut...no no no..it will reverberate and bugger the sound up...I thought you know what your on about glass and empty metal tube...dear oh dear...as for those tiny little speaker stands....lol....there not going to stop them from wobbling about..lol....your low fi is a joke...
@SMERGHEED There is no glass on that stand. The tubes were filled with sand when I was assembling the stand. Nice try. Stands are full welded steel and spiked so they dig into the floor. They dont wobble one bit.
@albolooki Thank you. I'm really happy with the sound especially given the budget. I didnt mind buying most of the items used. I just made sure they were physically clean since I'd have to be looking at them too :)
@svtcontour jerry jerry jerry.......if you want this to stop cunt stop gobbing me off on other channels....your the wanker pedo that keeps writting essays...
@svtcuntour er ok?..lol....what ever helps your ego.....if you want a tip put blue tac under your speaker that are sat on the subs.....or do I need to explain?.
@SMERGHEED I would do something like that but right now I cant because the speakers are sitting on some 3cm tall dense foam to get the speakers to the right height. Eventually I'll be raising the subwoofers off the floor with some tall spikes so once I do that, I will need to use blue tac. I've also seen people use play dough but I think playdough will leave an oily stain because of the material its made of.
@melenmike I dont think watts matter so much because of the way loudness works. It takes 10x the power to make it feel to the human ears like something is twice as loud. So that means a 100W amp is really only a tiny bit louder than a 50W. Most of the time when I listen to music, I've calculated that I used around 3-5W :)
@malnacs Thank you sir. It was my goal to set up something on a budget (old and new stuff) to finally get me happy. Didnt cost way too much and I couldnt be any happier. My favorite pieces are the Threshold amp and the Usher speakers. Both are gems IMO :)
Hi drumitar, I could probably do something like this down the road...but in the meantime if I find a link that might show it (at least via pictures), I will send it to you :)
The one on the third rack is the Pre-amp...basically a volume knob and input select for my amp(s). my other video shows the subwoofers I've built and the secondary amp I'm running. Search for a vid on youtube called "listening to some tiesto" :)
Top unit is a Threshold SA3 class A amp for my mains. Just below we've got my vintage soundcraftsmen preamp then we go to my squeezebox and MSB DAC. Below what powers my subs is a crappy Radioshack amp and an Audiocontrol piece that has a 2 way electronic crossover - set at 50Hz right now. The main speakers just play full range and bypass the crossover electronics.
The speakers are Usher S520 and subs are Vifa based which I built. They play flat to 22Hz and usable to 16.
Enya's got a great voice and the recordings are pretty decent. I dont really find them sad - well some are like this one but others are a bit more upbeat. Anyway about other songs, do you have any requests?
nice system!! but the music made me feel like dancing naked in the moon light with Frodo but thats just me. i love good small spks no box or baffle to cause coloration, but i think your beast amp is over kill. Check my set up on here.
LOL that was funny. The amp is only 50wpc so I dont really think its overkill. Well I mean yes I guess it would be because only a few watts are needed for normal listening but the extra power is there if I really wanted to hammer them (the speakers) which I have done before once or twice and they seemed to handle it surprisingly well :)
thats wierd my video isnt listed on my profile...Yeah pass labs are wicked my dream set up would be Wilson Alexandria seven of them or MBL with Krell mono blocks ,Lexicon processor and Wadia blu ray. As for NAD masters we are talking 8 granf U.S for pre power they are nothing like their midrange stuff. My vids under Justins home cinema computer 01..its in 2 parts.
Skip ahead to 3:17 in this vid and its all there :) I should add that even though I listed a CD player, I only use the Squeezebox player. All my CDs are ripped as WAV so its all uncompressed audio.
The only addition I've done since this video is a pair of subwoofers I built, an amp to drive the subwoofers and a dedicated crossover. If you do a search in youtube for "My new subwoofers", you'll see it as the 3rd or fourth item...or you can just go through my vids until you find it :)
Those speakers are awesome and less than a couple years old. I have not found anything under $1200 a pair thats sounds better.
ALso, IMO most popular music sounds like ass due to poor mastering. I think part of this is kids growing up with no reference as to what actually sounds good. Most are used to MP3's on some crappy computer speakers or headphones so there is no incentive for record labels to actually try and do a good job. Average current listeners wont know any better.
LOL what does looks have with how something sounds? Before making rediculous comments, you should find out what brand and model the speakers are and google a review or two and read. I've actually stated what they are at the end of the vid incase you didnt know.
Also your statement about at least listening to at least 128kbps mp3 on your ipod touch and bragging about it says a lot. You really should go to some proper stereo stores and sit in their listening rooms and listen to real stuff.
LMAO. You're an idiot if you think the wattage rating stamped on your amp actually matters. Please DO go into details about your system. I want to hear this. LOL.
By the way, the large amp you see in my video which is sitting on the top of the rack is rated at only 50 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms yet regarded as one of the best amps of all time. Google it. Educate yourself. Threshold SA3 designed by Nelson Pass.
@svtcontour LOL!! Ok, so you gave me a rundown of your system, I'll give you a rundown of mine. I have a Peavy 400 series 800 watt bass amplifier. It has 2 outputs both at 4-2 ohms, 30 VAC. That pushes 2 Cerwin Vega 12 inch subwoofers in custom made reflex boxes. And I don't have a 'stereo', I have a 9.2 surround sound system, but when listening to music, I prefer Quadraphonic. So for that 9.2, I have an Onkyo TX-NR5007 9.2 Channel A/V receiver.
@americaneagle791 Oh. By the way , I never said that my system made 128 bit, or compressed audio sound great, I just said thats that 128 is the minimum bit rate that I can stand. And I will make a video after my birthday. (To see what I get to improve my system)
So if you find 128Kbps acceptable, why do you dismiss others opinions about it not being acceptable? Before you say you didnt dismiss anything, look back at this thread. You were attacking right from the start.
No matter though, I will explain why you feel the way you feel.
@svtcontour Let me just reiterate myself one more time. I NEVER, EVER SAID 128Kbps SOUNDED GOOD! I NEVER SAID IT SOUNDED GOOD ON MY SYSTEM! Now that thats cleared up... If my system has anything, its clarity, resolution, ambiance, and sounds crisp and 'professional' even at high levels of volume. And yes, I will admit it, I am using a guitar amp to power the vegas right now, BUT, I DID just order a Crown XTi 6000 stereo 2 ohm amplifier. I also ordered 4 12 inch Rockford Fosgates.
All we're saying is that even 320Kbps is not comparable to uncompressed audio on the right stereo. I'm sure you can agree with that.
Also you came into this throwing insults. I think it was probably your first post
"...Sooorrry, those speakers just LOOK like there a 100 pair from radio shack or something like that. Plus, the drivers look well, crappy, and there is no way you can get any lows out of them"
You dont even know what I have. Just going by looks?
Just to clarify, that what we're talking about here (the rest of us that have commented on this vid) is sound quality and not low loud things go. I think you're mistaking wattage and power for how clean something is and the two cannot be any more unrelated.
Your big Crown bass AMP will be great driving a pair of big heavy subs, but I guarantee it will not reveal subtleness in music even compared to Crown's own studio series of amps which are much lower wattage.
BTW your equipment and the fact that you get everything with high wattage ratings implies that maybe you listen to your music real loud. You should consider that hearing is delicate and that you might be killing your ears. If you dont listen very loud, then you could be buying lower wattage stuff thats far more musical for the same money.
Most people never exceed 90db even when turning up their stereo because its too loud. 90db can be achieved with only a few watts.
@svtcontour This might sound like I'm, well, IDK, cocky or something or, well, IDK, but I like having that extra wattage and quality and knowing that I CAN turn up my system and know that I can keep on turning that dial and know that It's not going to sound like crap or get unbearable amounts of harmonic distortion. It just feels good. And I don't mind spending that extra money or doing that extra work to get that equipment. And, well, ya. I went off of looks and made un-legitimate...
@americaneagle791 assumptions. Now that I play the video again and look at listen to it, It does sound good and crisp and clear. And I don't listen to really LOUD music, but I do like having crisp clear sound and a nice setup. And I do like professionalism and a lot of people call me a perfectionist. So, I guess this is the part where I apologize and rate your video 5 stars and subscribe to you ;)
I like doing this to people after an argument, guess my age...
See now you're just being hard on yourself. You were not an asshole. We had some differing ideas which is fine. Plus some debating on youtube is always fun too.
@svtcontour Ya, I guess. Would you recommend the Vifa speaker brand for a person like me?? I've been in search of a really, nice speaker company for years now but have not found something that has really impacted me yet...
Its really hard to say because it really depends on the room and acoustics of the room. Its possible for an awesome speaker to sound terrible on one room and great in another. Some speakers are a bit more dull sounding but they might work fine in a room that has a lot of hard surfaces. Some speakers which are a bit too strong on teh highs might work well in a heavily carpeted room. Best thing is to try many which is why i always purchased all my stuff used and of course cheap :)
One thing I can say is that I was fairly impressed for the price when I heard the Monitor Audio Silver series of speakers. I came close to buying those for at least my setup but I finally ended up with the little Usher speaker because it seemed just a tad more natural sounding....so if you are able to hear the silver line from Monitor....then do so. They are very clean and clear IMO.
Ya that would help tons. Where I am, there are at least a dozen higher end audio shops I can go into and audition equipment. I recently had a chance to listen to $14,000 PMC speakers on a god knows how expensive Krell amp, CD, preamp combo. It was sick. So incredibly detailed, tight and at sound levels that rivaled a live performance. What I heard there is my reference. I keep that memory to judge everything I hear :)
@svtcontour I get what your saying. I live in Canada, Ontario and Ontario was lucky enough to have one of only two performances by the top 10 from American Idol, and I have to say. Absolutely incredible! I've been to other concerts before and they don't even come CLOSE to what I heard. Of course, I don't know ALL the details of the system they used but I heard a few of the tech personal talking on the way in and they said It topped out at just over 2 million watts, and yes, I know, wattage...
@americaneagle791 is not everything. But the bass, just hit you like a a punch in the chest and there was a full frequency range too. I like to use THAT to judge everything I hear.
Well the nice thing about wattage (true wattage, not the inflated stuff consumer goods somethings present) is that it allows the music to be very effortless even at low volumes. When the music demands a peak, it can deliver. True high wattage amplifiers have a very high current capability and thats why they cost money I guess. It takes a big power supply and a lot of output transistors to allow for that.
I see where you're going with hit but you'd be really surprised how loud and strong some amps go even if not rated so high. I think the most important thing is not the wattage but current capability. I always go by the weight test and power supply size :) For example my 50wpc amp on top is 65lbs of silky smooth but powerful machine. I think wattage is like horsepower but current (amperage) is like torque. Wattage looks great on paper but I think in the end, the current does the work.
Missions are ok but they are far from good as a "stereo" speaker. So why am I coming down on what you have? Well its to remind you that what you hear as "acceptable" sound at 128Kbps is due to the fact that the resolution is just not there in your equipment, so when you switch to lossless, you hear a small change. When resolution IS there on higher end equipment, the change is drastic. Thats why MKB and I dont like compressed audio.
Given that you have not given the exact model number (only a series), I will say that the series you have said appears to be a guitar amp so its not going to be very good at "sub" duty which is fine because the CV "subwoofers" have never really been able to go very low anyway...30Hz at best and thats at like -10db and thats for the 15". At 12", you're probably scraping the upper 30's and lower 40's for flat response.
The AV receiver doesnt have a lot of resolution either
Compressed music is crap. Even 320Kbps vs uncompressed is audible with the right music and stereo. If you have never heard a difference its because your stereo is sh*t . I know that because you're willing to listen to *at least 128*. .
I cannot stand 128k, I use simaudio amps dual-mono rated at 250wpc@8ohms 500@4ohms 1000@2ohms. The speakers I got are very revealing along with the accurate Amp that produces a shitload of current. Flac vs mp3@ 320 is quite noticeable. better DACs would also result in much better quality. Im running figital from AES to prism DAC -> simaudio through XLR -. canton spkr.
very nice. Simaudio stuff is great. I've never heard any Canton speakers in person but I do know they are supposed to be very accurate and detailed.
My next purchase is a better DAC (or maybe upgrading this one). Its just a standard issue MSB DAC. Its old but its an upgrade over my built in Squeezebox DAC and outputs...thats for sure :)
I actually perfer the sound of the cantons over the b&w I find them to be a little more detailed then them highs are amazing. My sound card is lynx aes16e digital only, a good DAC You can try for computer is the aurora16 from lynx too 16 chs of good conversion! Many studios use it! very good entry level although it cost around 2k. btw it is Balanced (XLR)
I have never been a big fan of B&W myself either. My favorite speakes so far which I've heard were a very big set of Theil but they were like $12K a pair.
I'll be checking out some DACs soon but 2K is definitely above my budget :( The most I can probably go for is a Benchark DAC which is around 1K in price I think.
My friend and I did a listening test. I took a detailed WAV music track and converted it to 128 and 320 MP3...then burned those two and the original WAV back to CD. My friend knowing which track was what would play something and I had to guess. The 128 was clearly audible with grittiness in the highs. The 320 vs wav was harder but I picked it out finally.
Sounds like a high current amp, probably tube like becuase it sound like it could be huge in current. I don't think mics are very good and youtube may compress audio making it not as good. Anyways teh setup looks good lots of current in that system. Im currently using BJC cables @americaneagle791 Compressed music will never sound great, Once the digital is compressed information is lossed permanently, no quipment will magically add that back in!
the loudness war going on right now is the best example of this. they don't care how the recording sounds as long as it plays loud on an ipod with a sucky amplification stage.
some people just don't know what they're talking about.
Ditch the headphones if its your primary music listening method :-) You're missing all the tactile sensations on the skin and internally in your body that would normally be there if you go to a live show or concert.
...not that it would make any difference in this case since we're listening to mono audio from a canon camera which in turn is compressed some more as it goes to youtube.
Of course in the end its preference. Headphones do have the advantage of being portable.
I know :) I was just speaking in general incase you listen a lot on headphones instead of loudspeakers.
There are a lot of debates about speakers vs headphones and there are some incredible headphones with amazing sound quality but the most amazing thing I've ever experienced was a pair of pretty massive PMC brand speakers in a large room powered by some wicked Krell gear. Not cheap but damn it was just astonishingly good.
Whats the point in buying highend audio and cables if your gonna listen to music like that. that has no instruments. its a waste of money. unless your gonna listen to rock, jazz, or rap that has more sounds to be produced. a pair of klipsch and a denon amp will do fine for that kind of music.
Voices are more difficult to reproduce accurately than instruments because the human ear is much more sensitive to its errors. Its not about how much noise you need to reproduce, but its the quality of what you need to reproduce.
Most of my rock CDs are mastered like utter crap and I dont even consider rap as music. Why have an expensive stereo if the recording label making the stuff barely makes an effort...
By the way, there are more instruments in this song :)
@ACDCPSP obviously you know nothing about highend audio or music, if you listening to rap,,, picking up a couple Dr. seuss books and sampling other peoples music WOW !! thats real talent
I think the Ushers will have no problem going down to about 50Hz properly and maybe down to 40Hz at lower volume levels.
As far as the wattage goes, I dont think the number of watts matters so much, but the quality of those watts are important.
If you're on a budget and want something brand new, I'd go with a Yamaha 2 channel receiver such as the RX397. Its 50W RMS per channel which is just fine :)
thanks for the recommendation. I will try them on Usher S520 before deciding which one to buy.
Again, thanks. For the cable, as your suggestion I am going to buy the Beldon 14AWG (very cheap at electronics shop) and some banana plugs and make them by myself.
Thanks man. I have just DIY the cable. I have bought 2.5m pair (pure 14AWG) and 8 banana plugs (pure bronze). The sound much better, more detail, now I can hear all the different instruments clearly.
Thats awesome to hear. Glad you're enjoying the sound :) Next will be your RCA making journey I'm sure. Just a little more work but not too bad still. Even more gains there :) We will definitely be in touch. Always glad to talk to people who enjoy their audio.
I have also just bought 3.5mm to 2 RCA (24k gold plated) for my Airport Express (japanese brand, not so expensive about $11 only but I find that it's better than my normal $3, haha).I am not using CDP. My present setup is like that:
Macbook Pro (streaming music wirelessly) to Airport Express -->Denon M37(waiting for Marantz PM7200 or Arcam Alpha 8 integrated amplifier) -->Usher S520. I am now ok with the setup, will be very happy when got the Amp :)
Hi my friend. What can I say? Arcam Alpha 9 is very powerful, can blow any bookshelf speakers away. I never turn the volume more than 1/4. Very good sounding I can tell. I like Arcam, very good and cheap now, haha. I got it for $230 only, of course it is 2ndhand. Classic guitar and flute on Usher S520+Arcam Alpha 9 is just simply amazing :). will try biwiring in the near future to see any difference or not.
Hi, i have just bought Usher S520. Very happy with it. Now finding the speaker cables for it. What speaker cable brand you are using? Any recommendations? For me price is <70usd per pair is affordable. Thanks
After much testing, I've concluded that expensive speaker cables do nothing. The most important thing is the guage and the length. I'd recommend 12 guage and if you can keep it under 10 feet in length per speaker, you're good to go :)
Oh by the way, the speaker cable doesnt have to be special either. Home Depot would be great to visit. From their electrical deptartment, get some 12 guage SOO rated cable with two conductors and its all good. Its flexible and good quality copper.
I tried one of those monster power condititoners that were like $500 but my sound stage collapsed and bass impact went away. I took it back. Maybe a different model would work better.
You know, I had heard about Threshold way back in the day and knew they were good but I didnt know much else. I had a souncraftsmen power amp before this which I didnt mind using (IMO its better than a NAD or Rotel for SQ). Anyway I wanted to try a class A amp, saw this on ebay about 5 years ago and picked it up. I was FLOORED at the soundstage, depth, resolution and control of this thing. It totally woke up the system.
I also love the warmth around the amp - literally the heat. LOL
Hi joshi2560, on the top of the stand is my amplifier and on the back wall, I have a picture of space. I think maybe it looks like a big wide screen TV but it should just be a picture.
Thanks dude :) I'm glad you enjoyed the system and song. I've spent a lot of time to try and get a really nice system without killing my bank account. I have nothing against used items and more than half of the stereo is quite vintage but hey nothing wrong with that :)
PS. Enya...what can one say about her voice. Wow what a voice it is.
Thanks for the comment. Sorry I didnt see this long ago. I definitely do get lots of enjoyment from sitting and listening and in the end, it wasnt that horribly expensive to set up (many parts were purchased used). Great way to fight stress at the end of the day.
Welcome to the wonderful world of cables.

DAVEDOUGHY 1 year ago
@DAVEDOUGHY Ya after making my cables (RCA and speaker) I've learned through some blind listening tests that cabling is not as critical as some people say it is. As long as the cables are good enough, then all is good. No super fancy cables needed. Oh well :)
The little monitors actually did ok because its a fairly small room so I was not driving them very hard. Since this video, I've added two subwoofers that I made and now I have zero problem with deep or strong organ notes :)
svtcontour 1 year ago
@nazanruzie Ya it gets pretty damn crazy. I guess in the end if it makes people happy spending money, its fine but the companiess that sell those cables and make outlandish statements about them just make me sick. Many of the claims are outright BS! LOL.
svtcontour 1 year ago
Aren't those speaker too close to each other?
player1CR 1 year ago
@player1CR I'd say they are about 6 feet apart and because the size of the room is only a 10x12, I'm only sitting back about 7 feet so given that its a close listening distance, its not too bad. If I was further back, then it probably would be a bit too close.
svtcontour 1 year ago
I guess you will not get the same fine sound imagine with cheap dollarama cables.
craneywatch 1 year ago
@craneywatch Well its funny, since making my own cables, I did a blind listening test and to my surprise, the short dollar store cables and the 'good' ones I made sounded the same to me. I had a buddy swap cables while the volume level was set in the same position and yup, couldnt tell things apart. The only time things were audibily different were on a 20 foot pair of dollar store RCA cables - so the only thing I can conclude is that audio cables of normal lengths all sound similar to me :(
svtcontour 1 year ago 2
@svtcontour You're right. There have been studies showing speaker cables make NO difference except at long distances because of noise. Even moderately priced cables work 100% fine.
SpectralUnderground 1 year ago
I believe I have the same speaker stands used when my B&W 705s. Well, at least they look similar. Never did fill the stands. Was thinking about using shotgun pellets, not sand.

Very nice and neat setup. I'm glad you are enjoying it. For those that are giving you grief, it's just the jealousness coming out. What one hears is subjective. As long as you enjoy it, that's what counts. Check out my stereo. This is a very time consuming and pocket emptying hobby we got here.
RayPaganJr 1 year ago
@RayPaganJr Thank you. I agree. Hearing is as subjective, if not more than sight because the brain and imagination get more involved. I definitely do enjoy the hobby and seeing your video, I can tell you're passionate about your music as well. Good stuff :)

@SMERGHEED There is no glass on that stand. The tubes were filled with sand when I was assembling the stand. Nice try. Stands are full welded steel and spiked so they dig into the floor. They dont wobble one bit.

svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcuntour er ok?..lol....what ever helps your ego.....if you want a tip put blue tac under your speaker that are sat on the subs.....or do I need to explain?.
SMERGHEED 1 year ago
@SMERGHEED I would do something like that but right now I cant because the speakers are sitting on some 3cm tall dense foam to get the speakers to the right height. Eventually I'll be raising the subwoofers off the floor with some tall spikes so once I do that, I will need to use blue tac. I've also seen people use play dough but I think playdough will leave an oily stain because of the material its made of.

melenmike 1 year ago
@melenmike I dont think watts matter so much because of the way loudness works. It takes 10x the power to make it feel to the human ears like something is twice as loud. So that means a 100W amp is really only a tiny bit louder than a 50W. Most of the time when I listen to music, I've calculated that I used around 3-5W :)
svtcontour 1 year ago
very nice system

Oh, btw, is that another amplifier or a crossover on the 3rd rack up?
americaneagle791 1 year ago
The one on the third rack is the Pre-amp...basically a volume knob and input select for my amp(s). my other video shows the subwoofers I've built and the secondary amp I'm running. Search for a vid on youtube called "listening to some tiesto" :)
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour Ya, I just saw those, they look pretty good, nice job.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
Whats the equipment there btw?
MKBEntertainment 1 year ago
@MKBEntertainment
They play flat to 22Hz and usable to 16.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@MKBEntertainment
Oops I didnt realize this video didnt have my sub amp and subs. Thats in my other video... look for the video called "listening to some tiesto" :)
Subs are set up to just fill in where the mains drop off so while they look big, they dont jump out in anyway. I really like the setup.

nice system!! but the music made me feel like dancing naked in the moon light with Frodo but thats just me. i love good small spks no box or baffle to cause coloration, but i think your beast amp is over kill. Check my set up on here.
sodiumwinter 2 years ago
LOL that was funny. The amp is only 50wpc so I dont really think its overkill. Well I mean yes I guess it would be because only a few watts are needed for normal listening but the extra power is there if I really wanted to hammer them (the speakers) which I have done before once or twice and they seemed to handle it surprisingly well :)
Now I will check out your system :)
svtcontour 2 years ago
oh and leave a comment! That is one big 50 watter!!

thats wierd my video isnt listed on my profile...Yeah pass labs are wicked my dream set up would be Wilson Alexandria seven of them or MBL with Krell mono blocks ,Lexicon processor and Wadia blu ray. As for NAD masters we are talking 8 granf U.S for pre power they are nothing like their midrange stuff. My vids under Justins home cinema computer 01..its in 2 parts.
sodiumwinter 2 years ago
Do you mind listing what all is in your set up?
DallasfuckingTT 2 years ago

@americaneagle791
Threshold SA3 designed by Nelson Pass.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour LOL!! Ok, so you gave me a rundown of your system, I'll give you a rundown of mine. I have a Peavy 400 series 800 watt bass amplifier. It has 2 outputs both at 4-2 ohms, 30 VAC. That pushes 2 Cerwin Vega 12 inch subwoofers in custom made reflex boxes. And I don't have a 'stereo', I have a 9.2 surround sound system, but when listening to music, I prefer Quadraphonic. So for that 9.2, I have an Onkyo TX-NR5007 9.2 Channel A/V receiver.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791 And for speakers (for the receiver) I have:
Mains: Mission 2-way, Reflex Loaded 100 - 150w RMS 701 Model. x2
Front and Rear Centers: Mission M3C1i 2-way Reflex Loaded 100w RMS
Front Tops: Custom built 2-way, with 2 mission drivers (1x Tweeter, 1x Midrange)
Sides: Custom built 2-way, with 2 mission drivers (1x Tweeter, 1x Midrange)
Surrounds: Custom built bi-surrounds with 6 misson drivers (3x tweeter, 3x midrange)

@americaneagle791 Oh. By the way , I never said that my system made 128 bit, or compressed audio sound great, I just said thats that 128 is the minimum bit rate that I can stand. And I will make a video after my birthday. (To see what I get to improve my system)
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
So if you find 128Kbps acceptable, why do you dismiss others opinions about it not being acceptable? Before you say you didnt dismiss anything, look back at this thread. You were attacking right from the start.
No matter though, I will explain why you feel the way you feel.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour Let me just reiterate myself one more time. I NEVER, EVER SAID 128Kbps SOUNDED GOOD! I NEVER SAID IT SOUNDED GOOD ON MY SYSTEM! Now that thats cleared up... If my system has anything, its clarity, resolution, ambiance, and sounds crisp and 'professional' even at high levels of volume. And yes, I will admit it, I am using a guitar amp to power the vegas right now, BUT, I DID just order a Crown XTi 6000 stereo 2 ohm amplifier. I also ordered 4 12 inch Rockford Fosgates.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
Just going by looks?
svtcontour 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
Just to clarify, that what we're talking about here (the rest of us that have commented on this vid) is sound quality and not low loud things go. I think you're mistaking wattage and power for how clean something is and the two cannot be any more unrelated.
Your big Crown bass AMP will be great driving a pair of big heavy subs, but I guarantee it will not reveal subtleness in music even compared to Crown's own studio series of amps which are much lower wattage.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
90db can be achieved with only a few watts.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour This might sound like I'm, well, IDK, cocky or something or, well, IDK, but I like having that extra wattage and quality and knowing that I CAN turn up my system and know that I can keep on turning that dial and know that It's not going to sound like crap or get unbearable amounts of harmonic distortion. It just feels good. And I don't mind spending that extra money or doing that extra work to get that equipment. And, well, ya. I went off of looks and made un-legitimate...
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791 assumptions. Now that I play the video again and look at listen to it, It does sound good and crisp and clear. And I don't listen to really LOUD music, but I do like having crisp clear sound and a nice setup. And I do like professionalism and a lot of people call me a perfectionist. So, I guess this is the part where I apologize and rate your video 5 stars and subscribe to you ;)
I like doing this to people after an argument, guess my age...

svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour Ya, I guess. Would you recommend the Vifa speaker brand for a person like me?? I've been in search of a really, nice speaker company for years now but have not found something that has really impacted me yet...
americaneagle791 1 year ago
Its really hard to say because it really depends on the room and acoustics of the room. Its possible for an awesome speaker to sound terrible on one room and great in another. Some speakers are a bit more dull sounding but they might work fine in a room that has a lot of hard surfaces. Some speakers which are a bit too strong on teh highs might work well in a heavily carpeted room. Best thing is to try many which is why i always purchased all my stuff used and of course cheap :)
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour All right, thanks for the reply.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
Anytime.
They are very clean and clear IMO.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour Definitely will. But first I need to find an professional audio store, I usually order all my stuff on the internet.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
I keep that memory to judge everything I hear :)
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour I get what your saying. I live in Canada, Ontario and Ontario was lucky enough to have one of only two performances by the top 10 from American Idol, and I have to say. Absolutely incredible! I've been to other concerts before and they don't even come CLOSE to what I heard. Of course, I don't know ALL the details of the system they used but I heard a few of the tech personal talking on the way in and they said It topped out at just over 2 million watts, and yes, I know, wattage...
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791 is not everything. But the bass, just hit you like a a punch in the chest and there was a full frequency range too. I like to use THAT to judge everything I hear.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791 And it was just SO clear and... to tell you the truth, I was speechless at the end. I had goosebumps near the end.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
And you know, thats the most important part of music. The goosebumps. The emotion it brings is what its all about.
PS. I'm in Ontario too :) Hello fellow Canadian!
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour I cannot agree more. HOLY! OMG! YOUR IN ONTARIO!!! Can you pm me where about in ontario?
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
It takes a big power supply and a lot of output transistors to allow for that.
svtcontour 1 year ago
I see where you're going with hit but you'd be really surprised how loud and strong some amps go even if not rated so high. I think the most important thing is not the wattage but current capability. I always go by the weight test and power supply size :) For example my 50wpc amp on top is 65lbs of silky smooth but powerful machine. I think wattage is like horsepower but current (amperage) is like torque. Wattage looks great on paper but I think in the end, the current does the work.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
BTW wattage is not an indicator of SQ
svtcontour 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
The AV receiver doesnt have a lot of resolution either
svtcontour 1 year ago
@americaneagle791

MKBEntertainment 1 year ago
@MKBEntertainment AT LEAST 128 bit. AT LEAST.
americaneagle791 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
Compressed music is crap. Even 320Kbps vs uncompressed is audible with the right music and stereo. If you have never heard a difference its because your stereo is sh*t . I know that because you're willing to listen to *at least 128*. .
svtcontour 1 year ago
@americaneagle791
MKBEntertainment 1 year ago
@MKBEntertainment
very nice. Simaudio stuff is great. I've never heard any Canton speakers in person but I do know they are supposed to be very accurate and detailed.
My next purchase is a better DAC (or maybe upgrading this one). Its just a standard issue MSB DAC. Its old but its an upgrade over my built in Squeezebox DAC and outputs...thats for sure :)
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour
MKBEntertainment 1 year ago
@MKBEntertainment
I have never been a big fan of B&W myself either. My favorite speakes so far which I've heard were a very big set of Theil but they were like $12K a pair.
I'll be checking out some DACs soon but 2K is definitely above my budget :( The most I can probably go for is a Benchark DAC which is around 1K in price I think.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@MKBEntertainment
I'll agree with you on that :)
My friend and I did a listening test. I took a detailed WAV music track and converted it to 128 and 320 MP3...then burned those two and the original WAV back to CD. My friend knowing which track was what would play something and I had to guess. The 128 was clearly audible with grittiness in the highs. The 320 vs wav was harder but I picked it out finally.
svtcontour 1 year ago
@svtcontour
Sounds like a high current amp, probably tube like becuase it sound like it could be huge in current. I don't think mics are very good and youtube may compress audio making it not as good. Anyways teh setup looks good lots of current in that system. Im currently using BJC cables @americaneagle791 Compressed music will never sound great, Once the digital is compressed information is lossed permanently, no quipment will magically add that back in!

amen on both counts bro.
the loudness war going on right now is the best example of this. they don't care how the recording sounds as long as it plays loud on an ipod with a sucky amplification stage.

I can really tell the difference, from the video you made......
wait, I'm listening to your speakers on my headphones.... wait...wait....
DallasfuckingTT 2 years ago
Ditch the headphones if its your primary music listening method :-) You're missing all the tactile sensations on the skin and internally in your body that would normally be there if you go to a live show or concert.
...not that it would make any difference in this case since we're listening to mono audio from a canon camera which in turn is compressed some more as it goes to youtube.
Of course in the end its preference. Headphones do have the advantage of being portable.
svtcontour 2 years ago
@svtcontour Yeah I was being sarcastic
DallasfuckingTT 2 years ago
I know :) I was just speaking in general incase you listen a lot on headphones instead of loudspeakers.
There are a lot of debates about speakers vs headphones and there are some incredible headphones with amazing sound quality but the most amazing thing I've ever experienced was a pair of pretty massive PMC brand speakers in a large room powered by some wicked Krell gear. Not cheap but damn it was just astonishingly good.
Anyway thats that. Happy New Year by the way.
svtcontour 2 years ago
Whats the point in buying highend audio and cables if your gonna listen to music like that. that has no instruments. its a waste of money. unless your gonna listen to rock, jazz, or rap that has more sounds to be produced. a pair of klipsch and a denon amp will do fine for that kind of music.
ACDCPSP 2 years ago
Voices are more difficult to reproduce accurately than instruments because the human ear is much more sensitive to its errors. Its not about how much noise you need to reproduce, but its the quality of what you need to reproduce.
Most of my rock CDs are mastered like utter crap and I dont even consider rap as music. Why have an expensive stereo if the recording label making the stuff barely makes an effort...
By the way, there are more instruments in this song :)

@ACDCPSP obviously you know nothing about highend audio or music, if you listening to rap,,, picking up a couple Dr. seuss books and sampling other peoples music WOW !! thats real talent

how many watts per channel for the amplifier would you recommend to power the Usher S520. I want the bass is deep and managed well. Thanks
emotions07 2 years ago
I think the Ushers will have no problem going down to about 50Hz properly and maybe down to 40Hz at lower volume levels.
As far as the wattage goes, I dont think the number of watts matters so much, but the quality of those watts are important.
If you're on a budget and want something brand new, I'd go with a Yamaha 2 channel receiver such as the RX397. Its 50W RMS per channel which is just fine :)
svtcontour 2 years ago
How do you say about Marantz PM5003 or 6003? compare to yamaha RX397, which one is better?

Someone suggested me to try Arcam Alpha integrated amp so I will test it with Arcam Alpha 9 int amp on this coming Wed. Will feedback to you later :)
Cheers :)

Arcam stuff is pretty great. I'm sure you will like it! Let me know when you listen to it. I've never listened to one personally.

Take care, friend. Keep in touch :)

Hi, i have just bought Usher S520. Very happy with it. Now finding the speaker cables for it. What speaker cable brand you are using? Any recommendations? For me price is <70usd per pair is affordable. Thanks
emotions07 2 years ago
After much testing, I've concluded that expensive speaker cables do nothing. The most important thing is the guage and the length. I'd recommend 12 guage and if you can keep it under 10 feet in length per speaker, you're good to go :)
Oh by the way, the speaker cable doesnt have to be special either. Home Depot would be great to visit. From their electrical deptartment, get some 12 guage SOO rated cable with two conductors and its all good. Its flexible and good quality copper.

What is the guage?

I'm using 10 guage right now but I've also tried 12 guage and there was no audible difference.

How do you like the Usher S-520's. They sound very nice...detailed and smooth. I would have them mated with a Rotel integrated.

you would be suprissed the difference with sound when you get a power conditioner.

I tried one of those monster power condititoners that were like $500 but my sound stage collapsed and bass impact went away. I took it back. Maybe a different model would work better.

no im using a midatlantic in my studio. my father uses adcom one's from the early 90's.

Its my squeezebox network music player. I've ripped all my CDs as WAV and this streams it from my computer. Best thing I've purchased :)

Thank you :) Definitely makes me happy after a stressful day at work.
svtcontour 2 years ago
Thanks friend. If you a do a vid of your system one day, it would be cool to see. We need more Threshold on youtube.
svtcontour 2 years ago
You know, I had heard about Threshold way back in the day and knew they were good but I didnt know much else. I had a souncraftsmen power amp before this which I didnt mind using (IMO its better than a NAD or Rotel for SQ). Anyway I wanted to try a class A amp, saw this on ebay about 5 years ago and picked it up. I was FLOORED at the soundstage, depth, resolution and control of this thing. It totally woke up the system.
I also love the warmth around the amp - literally the heat. LOL

great sound, but is that a tv at the top of the stand
yoshi2560 2 years ago

Enya is good. =)
Try some Imogen Heap, especially track: Hide and Seek.
