I think I'm realizing that with my Heirloom Tomatoes I need to make one of those fencing trellis. They're going crazy and a simple tomato cage is NOT working. Any other recommendations?
I use T-posts, a double row of them (one row on the front side of the tomatoes, another row on the back side of them) I then put 3 strands of wire on the posts and use old panty hose strips to tie my mater plants. Make sure you do not grow your maters in the same spot every year. You want a 3 year plan for growing them. After the first year, grow something like pole beans in the spot where you grew your maters the previous year.
Great info Pattie as usual. Can you do a video on companion gardening? I didn't realize there was a certain way to plant. I planned to just put vegetables in no certain arrangement. Thanks
your awesome your doing what i want too do i have 1 raised bed which is a plastic sandbox which i used for my veggies but i want more i want another raised bed i just wanna keep growing. iam so tired after work iam too lazy too build one maybe you will motivate me too do it.
Great overview video Patti! It's exactly what I've tried to do with squares as I don't have nearly the beds you have. Isn't it amazing what all you can put into one little bed! Very well done!
I may still plant pole beans when my corn gets a bit taller in front, but I'd "heard" that beans no longer companion with corn so I'm leary. Probably wrong info. /shrug
Beans grow awesome with corn! You plant your corn, let it get a couple of feet high, plant your beans, THEN you can even plant pumpkings! The foliage from the pumpkins shade the soil, preventing weeds from growing Patti knows her stuff, the process of growing pole beans with corn is a native American/and Mexican way of growing. It's ancient. If you plant pumpkins as well, you get 3 crops in one space!
I've inadvertently planted successively, mainly due to lack of time, although I can see it is a good mistake to make! I accidentally planted summer squash next to my trellis, and it is the bush variety! How silly of me. Looks good, I've been eating salad just about everyday now for the last week, it is neat.
That's great. Have you heard of the three sister garden? The American Indians invented it and you have part of it already. It's planting corn, beans and squash or pumpkins together. The beans use the corn as support, the beans fix nitrogen, and the pumpkins act as a living mulch.
