It's about going to Manchester to see Beck's first ever U.K. gig which was at the university on November 24th 1994. I was also there. It was great. Love this track too. Glad to see they're still going also.
@dankw90 haha, football is there anything it can't do. I remembered the lyrics i heard from the premier league years and searched it on lyrics finder and here i am :)
@PD1968 Sheffield, I think, but they're singing about a day out in Manchester, hence the line "rolling into Sheffield tonight" towards the end. I'd forgotten about them through the 2000s, just listening again now and appreciating how good they've been for more than a decade. Massively under-appreciated in my view.
@PD1968 Yeah, right... Southport is not in Merseyside and neither is Matlock Bath. Bloody scousers they'll steal anything if you leave it around for five minutes.
Southport is in Merseyside you retard, get your facts right!! Half of the so called manc bands aren't from Manchester either but it doesn't stop them from saying manc band.Four of The Charlatans are from Wolverhampton,Ian Brown is from Warrington Cheshire, even The Verve have more merseysiders than mancs in them,The Hollies are from Lancashire, the Bee Gees from the Isle Of Man. The list is endless but I bet you haven't questioned that have you?
I think it has to do with the 2 complex ideas, one that you must smell the roses and enjoy music, but at the same time must learn to Carry yourself to work, because no one cares how you feel on the inside. Promote Good Music.
I love this song but i dont get the video. what does them busking and a man trying to get up an escalater have to with whippin picadilly? lol good song though
@sk8rzak11 the guy trying to get onto the ever moving escallator i think is a jibe at the futility of people always trying to climb social ladders.. maybe the message is, instead of following the masses up those social ladders/escallators, you should save yourself and listen to some music and enjoy yourlife, because in the end, no matter how hard people work to succeed, there never seems to be enough hours in the day :)
I'm related to tom gray from the gomez^^ :)

anyone know what they are referring to when they sing "academy cartwheel's breaking your hands"?? were they like gymnasts in uni or something???
timotep 1 year ago
or maybe capoeiristas?
timotep 1 year ago
@timotep The Academy is Manchester University's venue for bands, so I can only imagine it's a reference to going to see bands there.

Grande pezzo (it's funny). E bravi i Gomez....ce ne fosse però almeno uno di loro che abbia la faccia da rockstar! Aahahhaaaaaahahaa
