Happy New Year!....BTW, I hope you go see the doctor. That cough is symptomatic of a smoker! And BTW, self-confessed smokers are equally affected....oh, I just noticed I'm a little late. I don't know why but I don't like him looking so old. He's no longer seems stupid, funny & accident prone. You can't be when you're like me, an old NSWelshman.
You're right about the patents. The oil companies owned the battery patents for the GM EV1 electric car and refused to licence it to GM anymore. They also own a lot of shares in GM and other car companies too. This is why the highly efficient EV1 was recalled and crushed! People were recharching their EV1's from various solar power technologies too.
By the way, it is an electric universe. Go to holoscience with a dot and a com on the end for the facts.

I want to see you on Top Gear chewing Jeremys head off. I hope your prediction is wrong on that one. Not too good at venom, I'll leave that to others more skilled in anger.
Sadly its not that simple. Batteries take a long time to charge ie hardly practical on a long journey. I guess thats the main case for hydrogen cells, you can refill quickly. I wonder if a hybrid of the two would work. Can hydrogen cells be made to store electricity from the mains?
I've read about the possibility of service stations which pump out spent electrolyte and pump in freshly charged stuff. Seems like a good idea to me... and it would give the energy companies something useful to do.
I've done some research on lithium iron phosphate batteries. An interesting technology for sure, but I've found no evidence of significantly reduced recharging time. Do you have a reference?
Similarly, you might want to look at silver zinc batteries, which look interesting, and don't rely on lithium.
The Obama era may go better than anyone thinks. Obama has a theory about political and human interaction that will be tested. Of course he is also a standard vanilla politician, but the U.S., and indeed the world, face huge challenges. Maybe, just maybe, people, even self-interested rich people, will respond to new answers, and not the same old crap. Let's hope.
I think you'd look a lot better with a shaved head honestly. Looking forward to some fresh Dwarf as soon as possible. I would have never known about you if it wasn't for Dwarf.
Don't geothermal do-hickies emit a fair bit of heat, We'd be taking heat energy from the earth's core and directly putting a small amount into the atmosphere, and indirectly putting all the rest in too??? At least it's renewable, since the energy comes from the sun's gravitational pull.
Unrelated side-note: I drove 300 miles in a little over 4 and a half hours on Sunday night, with my lights and windscreen wipers on. Roll on the leccy car that can beat that ;-).
I see where you're coming from but I'm going to bet against you on the blu-ray issue. The discs hold upto 50GB of data each, over 10X the amount held by a single layer DVD. With time the price of the technology will become as small as that of DVDs and therefore deliver incredible value for money on the data storage front. This alone will be enough to ensure they almost completely replace DVDs.
People said the same thing about DVD when SVCD were popular; "DVD will never take off" etc. But here we are now, DVD came and is now in the same boat as SVCD were back in the day.
I personally cannot wait until DVD is done and dusted, Bluray is the future.
What's wrong with Nuclear power? I love that, I love the fact that merely being over 50 makes me, by default, wise. I'm very pro-science and technology, I'm not an organic vegan who thinks we should live in a pre industrial fantasy. However, there are some major problems with nuclear power. They can go wrong, and when they do, they go really wrong. Now I agree the technology has improved, they are less likely to fail, and thank heavens for that, but the dangers are huge, and what about the waste
There has bee one fatal nuclear accident. And the oldest British reactors, which are still in use, and not nearly as efficient as a modern one, are immune to both causes of the Chernobyl disaster. You physically cannot cause a meltdown in ours without doing a good deal of damage to the facility 1st. The waste, takes bunches of 245,000 to become safe, it'll be done by the time the next dominant species rises to power, even if someone "cleans the test tube".
biggles: You could be right about that. In fact, naysayers could be right about a lot of things. But wouldn't it be most sensible to go ahead and try out all the safe, non-polluting methods before we get into clean coal, nuclear and other so-called answers??
Robert, Love ya, but one of teh biggest lies in American fiction is the "Three Mile Island disaster." People on teh street believe there was a leak, but teh fact is, no leak, no one hurt, there has never been a nuclear plant accident resulting lost radiation in UK or US. I suggest driving is much more dangerous than nuclear power, as more people die etc etc. If you have been, thanks for Reading.
Predictions for 2009, Israel will remove all of its settlements, return to its 67 borders, stop using disproportionate force, allow the return of refugees, knocks down its wall, withdraw its army from the West Bank and ceases to interfere with Palestinian politics, trade, water/energy supplies, and hell will freez over.
more war, more hunger, less money, more bail outs of richmens intrest's, more erosion of freedoms, more civil unrest. Just may be a pandemic or two, just to give us something to worry about, and kill a of the few surplus population off.
Well thats very grimm. Will no-one fall in love. No-one grow in spirit beyond expectations.I think the best and the worst of the world can be found in the human existance. If there is war someone will find comfort and peace. If there is disease someone will become whole and well.Take this line from a cartoon " yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mistery, today is a gift... that's why they call it the present." hoping you feel better.
Red Dwarf will find a way. I can't see them not cashing in on a Rd revival by not putting out a dvd special. Can you? seriously? When all said and done our TV shows run on money, are made for money and are continued for money. There are very few shows that aren't driven by money and these are shown as charity to make the viewing public like them more. Money = Rd on Dvd. About time as well.
Nice mix of predictions. About the swearing: I have a sister in law who listens to hardcore "gangsta" rap, and she has memorized the radio edits. In place of the cursing parts, she cuts the volume out while still mouthing the words, or simulates that record scratching sound, or in general copies whatever trick the radio editors used. is not getting on Topgear such a problem? i thought it would more than a relief i mean to be stuck in the same area with that that bloody idiot clarkson telling 99% of the male population that the best buys are cars that we cannot afford anyway in such an arrogant manner. I would rate him the most popular face to pin to a dartboard. love your videos.
Thanks for keeping me thoroughly entertained during 2008 with youtube vids, I watch them all religiously and love the rants, finger up from me on that one ;-) Go get them Top Gear tards, they want petrol injected in their anuses for only then will they be happy.

Love you Bobby, but with the continuing increase in numbers of scientists publicly debunking the global warming myth and the recent, albeit quet, exposure of Al Gore's con game of selling "global warming credits" (better than a ponzi scheme really) combined with the cold winter, Americans are forgetting about the recent "global warming" nonsense. Hopefully we will turn to green technologies such as nuclear power plants and so on anyway.
Great vid. How surprising I agree 99% of what you predict. Blue Ray will thrive, but with an upgrade and different use. Shocking that batteries could have been better. Energy as a rule should become a public resource and owned by the people and not controlled under private or corp concerns. I also agree to expand my vocabulary and use less expletives in order to upgrade my expression and feelings about what I really mean to say yes or no to.
Thanks for the new vid! Always glad to see them. The mental shift toward energy conservation and alternate sources in the U.S. is noticeable. It's encouraging (just took a kick in the rear to get us thinking). Don't swear less! The car pool project sounds like a fantastic idea. Happy New Year! Looking forward to many more rants in '09
Happy New Year Mr. LLewellyn (lol hope I spelled that right). We've still got 6:30hrs left here in Utah til Midnight. Just wishing you and your family the best.
Hope you have a great New Year Robert! Thanks for all your videos. I'm always entertained and educated by them and look forward to all your new projects in the coming year.
I herby pledge to join you in cutting down on unnecessary swearing.
Frank Skinner took all of the swearing out of one of his recent 'comedy' tours to see if it would still work and is doing an episode of panorama about it in febuary.
I think that Blu-Ray might catch on, but only when the cost of the equipment and the discs go down in price. That's always the first hurdle for new technologies. Wait a few years and Blu-Ray will be on par with DVD's. And Happy New Year to you too (in 9 hours and 31 minutes).
On Barrack Obama, I suspect you may be right. I am a big fan, but I do realize that there is only so much he can do. Ultimately congress, which is HEAVILY controlled/influenced by corporate dollars, has more to do with what goes on here. People who think President Obama will wave some magic wand and make everything rosey will be very disappointed indeed. As for Blu-Ray, you MAY be right again. People watching their money will be unlikely to want to spend an extra $10/DVD plus new equipment costs
Suspect you're wrong about Blu-ray. It's defeated HD-DVD which was it's main challenge. Sales of Blu-ray capable equipment will continue and the market for the discs (which I for one can't play) will get bigger.
I predicted the same for Blu-Ray as you have, Robert, but I was wrong. And here's why:
When America made the big push for its audiences to change to widescreen digital TV, instead of doing what we in AU and the UK did, which was have an intermediate stage of Standard Def Digital TV, the US pushed HD, Digital TV, and Blu-Ray concurrently.
And that's why Blu-Ray will continue to sell (until downloads become feasible, though the anti-torrent faction makes me doubt even that).
Have a great new year-give Global Warming some serious research-it's all bullshit, sure the environment is a mess and needs attention (i have worked in re-cycling for 20 years) but global warming is a massive hoax.
reign: human capacity to screw things up is limitless. you're an idiot. in fact, people like you believe there are no limits to ocean and air to support the bad behavior of humans. please read something worthwhile, get a life, wake up. thanks.
reign: Wonder how many years of research is represented in all those climate scientists who are saying we've got a problem with your carbon emissions? 20,000?? All peer-reviewed! 20 years isn't much by comparison. If you've done any serious research, you should know that we've actually demonstrated what our emissions are doing to the air - it ain't pretty.
Have a great new years Bob. I spent Boxing Day traipsing round the city of Florence(beaut of a city but bloody cold) and had cause to look at caricatures being done by some artist flogging them to the tourists. All sorts of pictures of Pitt, Clooney, Cruise all the Hollywood A-List youd expect, but right in the middle of LAs finest who do I see but your mate Danny John-Jules.The artist said that his pictures of you Dwarfers were very popular and were his highest sellers.
In response to your comments on the UK slang for cigarettes, you reminded me of an incident that happened to a mate.
A friend of mine was in JFK airport. He wanted a cigerette. He went to some police officers and asked 'Im gasping for a fag, is there a quiet corner where I can have one?'
It took thre of his mates to persuade them he wasnt soliciting for gay sex :S.
Ive enjoyed your videos since subscribing x months ago and look forward to more in 2009.
The power companies will only fully back renewable energy sources when the fossil fuels or within years of running out. Money talks the loadest in the this world.
I look forward to the new Red Dwarf hope you and the rest of the cast and crew have fun making them.
bring on battery cars, i was also aware of the larger corperations buying up clean and cheap ideas for powering cars but was unaware that their patents would run out. good news!

I hope you're right about BlueRay I don't want to buy ALL my movies AGAIN! I only just finished replacing my Video tapes with DVDs!
Where did you find info on Battery patents? it'd be interesting to see what else is "up for grabs"

i need to stop swearing as well.
I have always been a swearer but my current job has made me a huge foul mouth. My wife is starting to break my balls about it.

W00T Bobby!
I take it the saved head is ti fit under the kryten mask, if so PLEASE do a llewtube in said mask because I'm so looking forward to the new episodes!
Aside from that, a battery that goes 200 miles on 5 mins is astounding, and we all need one now!
have a happy new year, to you and your family!
I'll keep watching as long as you keep posting!

*slams head on desk* If it looks too good to be true, and smells too good to be true then maybe it is too good to be true!
I don't see any point trying to use facts, figures, or evidence to sway someone with such an obvious initial bias.

Nuke is the future; clean, cheap and efficient.

HurricaneHawk 3 years ago
On Barrack Obama, I suspect you may be right. I am a big fan, but I do realize that there is only so much he can do. Ultimately congress, which is HEAVILY controlled/influenced by corporate dollars, has more to do with what goes on here. People who think President Obama will wave some magic wand and make everything rosey will be very disappointed indeed. As for Blu-Ray, you MAY be right again. People watching their money will be unlikely to want to spend an extra $10/DVD plus new equipment costs

I don't know if you've heard Rob, but videos that have swearing in will be be algorithmically demoted by youtube, whatever that means.

Suspect you're wrong about Blu-ray. It's defeated HD-DVD which was it's main challenge. Sales of Blu-ray capable equipment will continue and the market for the discs (which I for one can't play) will get bigger.
Whouk 3 years ago
I predicted the same for Blu-Ray as you have, Robert, but I was wrong. And here's why:
When America made the big push for its audiences to change to widescreen digital TV, instead of doing what we in AU and the UK did, which was have an intermediate stage of Standard Def Digital TV, the US pushed HD, Digital TV, and Blu-Ray concurrently.
And that's why Blu-Ray will continue to sell (until downloads become feasible, though the anti-torrent faction makes me doubt even that).

Have a great new year-give Global Warming some serious research-it's all bullshit, sure the environment is a mess and needs attention (i have worked in re-cycling for 20 years) but global warming is a massive hoax.

reign: human capacity to screw things up is limitless. you're an idiot. in fact, people like you believe there are no limits to ocean and air to support the bad behavior of humans. please read something worthwhile, get a life, wake up. thanks.
nicholas9999 3 years ago
So 20 years research and practical experience makes me an idiot?.go fuck your self you narrow minded cunt.
reigninspain 3 years ago
reign: Wonder how many years of research is represented in all those climate scientists who are saying we've got a problem with your carbon emissions?

Weird but true
:)
