He's talking about a contract between capitalism and the average citizen? Well, there is no such contract. Ensuring fairness is up to the GOVERNMENT, that's why there are elections. So the government acts according to the citizens' BEST INTEREST.
Those fools who call themselves conservative just keep demonizing government in general, so nobody would be held accountable. Not "big" government is bad, YOUR governance is bad. How many times are they going to get away with it?
You are absolutely correct. The "social contract" is a political theory regarding the relationship between government and citizenry.
How many times will they get away with it? For however long Americans allow themselves to be ruled by fear, Republicans will exploit it and blame it on liberals to get elected.
Conveniently, it is the GOP that prevents the easing of American fear through things like guaranteed health care, etc.
I am wide awake now!!! That's Why I voted for Obama & Biden. I believe a woman has the right to choose what she want's to do with her own body!!!And I am anti-war as well I LOST FRIENDS AND RELATIVES IN THIS STUPID WAR THAT BUSH BABY W GOT US INTO. You can say what you want. I want our troops out of IRAQ!
What is war but retroactive abortion? Who are those people dying in the war over there? They're somebody's children, right?
How is it a zygote has a right to life but an Iraqi child (or man or woman) does not?
I don't know why you think you can have it both ways, but that god you say you love so much (remember? "turn the other cheek" and all that?) isn't going to be fooled when you're hauled up before him to account for yourself.
Rest of quote from McCain in 2005 so he warned of an economic crisis democrats fought him tooth and nail!
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
This is the quote from John McCain during a Senate speech in 2005.
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Macknown as Government-sponsored entities or GSEsand the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEOs report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
What are you talking about nice outfits? 150 million? Are you talking about the 150 thousand dollar outfit for Sarah Palin which she is not allowed to keep anyway please get your facts straight Shisho2k
Fundamentals are strong corrupt agencies were the problem see quote of speech by Mcain in the Senate below:
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole
Sarah Palin and her husband were members of the infamous Alaskan Independence Party. That's how she was elected the mayor, and later the governor. She is unpopular among 50% of Alaskan women who are pro-choice! Can anyone question McCain about his choice? Even the media is ignoring it.
McCain again proudly showed off Palin's pregnant unmarried teenaged daughter, and her rapist! He's proud of her obviouslyThe poor baby(Does she hope to win sympathy?)and Todd who runs 50% of Palin's office!
Sen.McCain doesn't understand ANYTHING about ANYTHING! Economics least of all. That's not his department. But he has the NERVE to question Sen.Barack's judgement when McCain has a LOT to explain about his own judgement when he picked Palin as his VP. Didn't he know that she and her husband were active members of a terrorist group called the Alaska Independence Party? In 2008 she addressed a convention of this party. Her political career was launched there.
McWho doens't get it and neither does Nobama. Wall Street didn't betray us, our government did. They both signed the bailout, have to vote for someone else now. Save your breath, the smear fests are all a waste of hot air. Only one more month to get more of the same, from either dem or rep.
Obama should playback some of Johns coments about the economy over and over again in his comercials and people would have to realize what an idiot John is. Also regarding his Maverick status. He was a Maverick many years back but has gone back on most of the things that made him a maverick to get where he has gotten.
The truth about the Government and the economy is that the only thing the government can do to control the economy is impose more regulations. But no one want to do that because it comes off as being too socialist. Other than that, Real Estate, the stock market, the federal reserve and oil prices are all entities independent of the presidency. No president can give guarantees to curb recession. All they can do is regulate taxes and spending, which this administration has done a terible job of.
The dude never answered the question. He was asked (paraphrasing) "what other aspects of the economy besides the workers, contribute to the fundementals of our economy being strong?" He couldn't give one example.
niether of the candidates understand the true underlying problems of the economy...the only person in the mainstream media who does is Dr. Ron Paul and no one in washington will listen to him, both candidates WILL bankrupt the U.S. its just a matter of how they will do it...
Too bad he didn't make it. He is the only Republican that I could even begin to believe was not lying to me. They never seemed to let the man speak. During the debates I think he never got out a single thought before the moderator or another candidate talked over him. Seemed like a good man. Intelligent and had integrity. Left with McSame I am voting Obama/Biden 08
Brilliant commentary as always! Too bad the only ones listening to you already feel the same way.
Come election day, America has a choice between intelligence and stupidity. In most other democratic nations around the world, this choice would be easy. Unfortunately, not so in the U.S.!
A message to republican's like Bill O'Reilly: Embrace intelligence, it won't hurt you!
no New World Order, just politicians lining their pockets with bribes. Like the Young Turk says. These politicians are not THAT smart. Bush or Pelosi don't even know how derivatives work, they're puppets.
The system isn't working out very well for us. I'm a fiscal republican with anarchist thoughts of not paying these idiots with government money. :o)
"I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. McCain has 7 houses and 13 cars! Obama has 1 house and 1 car...which by the way is a HYBRID!!! You tell me who's more in touch with the average American! Kill the talking points why don't you....stop the madness!! He didn't support ANY of the 911 commission's recommendations..by the way!
Yeah and Obama makes at a minimum 250k a year, without options with a private security force, and every person on the planet kissing his ass. If you think this guy is 'in touch' with the average american, youre out of your mind.
@skorpionsks ACTUALLY he makes $400K/year with a $50K expense allowance which has been fixed since 2001. He's the freakin' president...don't you think he needs security??? More now that ever with people like you and these ignorant, racist nut jobs out here! And yes, he's more in touch with the common than any other president...he's been on the ground helping people in need and didn't come from some wealthy family like drunken Bush that put a platinum spoon in his mouth....you're welcome!
@bdockery05 When did bush even come into my comment? Everything is about bush and racism with this bunch. Fact is you dont get to be the president without rubbing shoulders with some really nasty people that dont have the 'common person' interests at heart. Take that however you want. The guy is clearly a plant by some group of powerful financial interests, not by the people. The only reason people get into politics is the massive ego trip.
@skorpionsks It's not about Bush and racism...it's about the FACT that we have a group of Republicans who have rallied behind the idea to defeat everything democratic. Not only that, the same issues Republicans raise so much hell about now are the same things that they were silent about when BUSH and the Republican lead House and Senate had power. Too many politics...it's all about getting elected & going with what will keep them in Washington vs. doing what's in the best interest of the people
Lol, I have to admit I was a huge fan of McCain. He's a great man. But a strongly disagree with his position to support continuing the Iraq war indefinitely. Bring the troops home!
We've already killed more than a million Iraq's and funneled over a trillion dollars out of the tax payers towards companies like Halliburton.
Who is REALLY responsible for the economic crisis? This is perhaps one of the most compelling time-line reference vids I've seen yet. (Watch out. It moves a bit fast. Get your Visine ready.)
> watch?v=H5tZc8oH--o
If you "get it", then pass this along so people vote with the facts, not their emotions.
----
"The best vote you can make is one where you can criticize and scrutinize your candidates and still vote for them with confidence after having learned all the facts."
"he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more."
mcCain has been fundamentally helping to creat this financial crisis. his banker friends have been thanking him, basically.
Yeah dip he understands alot, the man proposed S.190 to take control of FMFM and he got stone walled by the Democrats. Yes...the Democrats helped create this crisis over holding the party line. Don't beleive me... go to Bloomberg and search for article ID: aSKSoiNbnQY0. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Oh and your boy Obama voted against S.190.
The bankers are repubs & mcCain... ceo richard fuld of lehman bros. departs with $446 million , john thain of merrill lynch gets $83.million and stan O'neal previous ceo for merril lynch departs with $165 million package deal, former ceo james cayne of bear sterns gets $138 million - then before jp morgan chase decides to buy bear sterns cayne dumps his entire stock and pockets $60 million. How can the govt. doll out billions to welfare these corp. when bush/chaney have clean out the treasury.
I still can't believe he said there's nothing wrong with the economy. Hope he felt like an idiot after the Stock Market fell fast faster than Eddie Murphy's career after Norbit.
This guy is filled with propoganda. Republicans lead the United States??? Why is George Bush named a lame duck president? Who leads the senate? Who leads the congress? This man thinks he is a genius. He sounds like a simple democrat spinning everything negative onto the republicans and giving no credit to the Democrats. Simple, ignorant, somewhat truthful but entirely misleading.
Unlike John McCain, who hasnt held a press conference in 41 days, Obama faced the press today (9/23) to respond to Paulson and Bernankes testimony on the proposed $700 billion Wall St. bail-out. The Democratic candidate laid out clearly his short-term and long-term goals, and even took questions from the press afterwards. Now thats what I call real leadership.
McCain... where are you? What inane BS are you spouting today? You've lost it, old man. You're sub-pathetic!
firstly, WTF is that cryptkeeper guy TALKING about? Secondly, I used to like Joe Scarborough - like I used to like Dennis Miller - but both of them seem to have buried their heads in W's rectum.
Incredible...both McCain & Arlen Specter championed de-regulation of the banking industry for years (now conservatives see what happens when you let lenders make profit without rules). He also blames Obama's policies for causing this crisis; but how is that possible? I thought Obama "has no experience?" How can you be blamed if you "lack the experience?" Conservative logic is a trip. LMBAO
I don't understand. If you do business in US weither it is a small mom & pop shop or a company you have to follow rules, laws, & especially client protection. You get fined or shut down if you breaks rules. These compaines pay te government to break the rules and when they are about to be shut down they get rewarded with billions to bailout. Shouldn't these compaines at least be fined for breaking rules. Just like us small shop owners.
Ron paul schooled Mccain in almost all debates.........I just....don't get how........mccain is standing there instead of ron paul... How the hell did Mccain get this far god damnit!?
McCain favors corporations like FOX more, so the corporations favor him. Since the Amerikan people look up to biased, power-hungry corporations for truth and news, they believe the lies.
I can't wait to see the debates. I think America will finally realize that despite their fears and prejudices, Obama is the right candidate to pull America back to it's former greatness and beyond. Again, Obama's poll numbers are leading and now Palin's numbers are declining. I think after the debates, there will be no doubt who is better capable to represent the American people and this great nation. No more lies, No more Bush, No more Rupublican trash!!! Save America!!! Vote Obama/Biden 08'
People are still worried about houses not costing enough, when the whole US fiat money system is melting down before our eyes. This is far worse than McCain. Obama, or the Young Turkeys realize.
The problem is not lack of regulation. The problem is that the crooks are in charge of the regulation. I'm talking about the Federal Reserve and its co-conspirator the US Treasury. Congress - the Democrats even more than Republicans - are screaming for more: "Only National Socialism can save us now!"
McCain just isn't bright enough to realize that he keeps shitting where he eats. "Do as I say, not as I do" is a poor polciy.
It's OK for guys like George W. Bush and John McCain do be intellectually bankcrupt, but please don't keep selling us your Bush shit, insisting we call it Chocolate Moose!
We have eyes, John McCain! We see when someone is naked. Bush has been exposed for years, and has the good sense to stay out of the public eye and ear range.
no, mccain is an idiot in terms of the economy...someone go look at the republican debates where ron paul embarasses mccain...he gets fuckin owned lol
Cenck, Or whatever your foreign name is. The Democrats were in charge of congress the last 3 years they lead the congressional banking committee. What did they do?
"Wall Street" represents big business in "Corporate America", not "Main Street" or small business and the working or middle class. There has never been a "social contract" of any kind between the two. The "social contract" is between the people and their government.
People are not the problem. "1-person 1-vote" is the problem. It is the same old political ideas with different people. People suffer more and more, corruption and embezzlement is on the rise and the gap between the minority rich and the majority poor keeps on widening. I think the democratic reform idea that says: "the more you earn, the less your vote counts and vice versa" is the best for now. It is called VOTE SIZING and I recommend everyone to find out about this.
Yeah, you know, Obama isn't really for FAIR trade, he's for FREE trade and he supports NAFTA. If you want to elect a president that will repeal that treaty and bring the gov back to the people - then Vote Nader..
same ol' lame excuse that sore looser dems always give. fact of the matter is that Gore lost because he didn't convince the majority of the people, and many like myself would not of voted for either side of the same corporate "demopublican" coin. in effect, what you're saying is that, Nader taking votes from Gore is like Apple taking consumers from Microsoft. the fact is that many of the people that did vote for Nader wouldn't of voted had he not been on the ballot, so that cancels your argument
who created this mess? democrats, who were not in charge, or republicans, who were in charge? how can you re-write history just because it doesnt fit you?
I don't understand.. when you say the government is not smarter than the free market. Who made the market free?.. what is Phil Graham? Slipped in deregulation laws? Now banks are auctioning off themselves? I think that regulation just may work this time, no?. The Fed probably had to keep interest rates low because of the deregulation laws, no?
Only one problem with regulation. The government is not smarter than the free market. By the time the government even knows about a problem the market has already regulated itself. After Bear Stearns announced their losses in Aug 2007, the market immediately quit writing subprime mortgages. Why? Because there were no buyers for subprime MBS. The market always regulates itself. It's when government interferes that we have problems. The Federal Reserve is the main culprit by keeping interest 2low
lets face it: When Bush was Governor of Texas (and a lot younger) he clearly was a very fluent articulate speaker (watch some of those old state-debates: He was fast, precise and very articulate) and he knew what he was talking about...then came his Presidency and his skills and mind clearly deteriorated...
...You an see the exact same thing happening to McCain right now...McCain isnt what he was in 2000. And unfortunately access to power makes these things worse, as does ageing...
To John McCain, a strong economy means that the workers are willing to work. Only slave masters look at that as the one qualification of a strong economy
McCain doesn't know whats wrong with the economy because he's baffled in figuring out which of his seven houses he should take his private jet to so he can sleep at night
lets face it, the president is no longer occupied by the elite educated people of America AKA, Adams, Jefferson, Madison. Instead this movement to vote for the "average man" is leading america down the drain. Let's vote for the down to earth guy, lets vote for the average joe, fucking idiots.
With all due respect (and, I really MEAN that!)...it's a sad day when our news reporters AND EVEN I know more about "the Economy" than a potential Presidential candidate...WOW! OBAMA/BIDEN '08! VOTE! VOTE!! VOTE!!!
The workforce is most certainly a "fundamental" of the economy and this fact should not be overlooked. However, there are many, many more important "fundamentals" that McCain has NOT mentioned, although he's been given many chances to offer his understanding of those "strong fundamantals".
Social contract between Wall Street and the average worker? What the f%#@. Are you for real McCain? The doctrine of capitalism revolves around the generation of profit for the capitalist, period. Capital has no social conscience or believes in notions of nationalism. Electing this man would be an error of historical proportions.
Correct me if I am wrong .. but isnt there a female adviser on McCain's staff that used to be the CEO of HP... and left with a SWEET GOLDEN PARACHUTE!?
Yupp, someone should tell McCain that managers have the duty to make as much money as possible. They are accountable by their clients. If they dont make as much money as possible they could easily face charges for carelessnes. They must make maximum profits, wether they want to or not. Its their job.
Thats why a free economy needs checks and ballances.
Everyone take notice of how McCain laughs after he says he will make sure that this never happens again. He can't even say that with a straight face because he knows it's more of his bullshit.
Just like he laughed after telling Tim Russert that he will follow Bin Laden to the gates of Hell. McCain is an IDIOT!
"McLame" is right. Innovation has been stifled on the energy front, because the Republicans are all about creating a circumstance of energy waste. If we could suddenly use have the energy we do, they would oppose that, because it is all about wasting energy and the personal selfish power that goes hand in hand with that. See GeorgeWad spend millions of dollars in jet fuel to show his ugly face at the olympics. This is typical Republican tactics and ethics..
MCCAIN: "The fundamentals of our economy are strong. And I'm in love with Phil Gramm. He gives me head head head."
PALIN: (after pregnant pause) "..............in what respect Charlie?.... I don't blink, Charlie. Get it, Charlie? No blinking. Uh uh. My eyes are glued open. I'm confident even when I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. Like my HERO George Dubya Bush!"
IT'S CLEAR??? He said "look at my remarks". He said, "The fundamentals of the economy are strong"...how does 'workers' fit into that statement if the economy is bad because there are jobs falling off the market by the minute the SE crashing?
McCain has no idea about the economy, and for many of us who make less than $250,000, or $4 Million dollars as he said a month ago, his ideas have nothing to do with 90% of America.
mccain is a sleazy little turd. he has stolen Obama's message of change so that both candidates will appear to be the same except for race and he is counting on undecided voters as being fundamentally racist...
This is a really, really good point...I think this is exactly what mccain is doing, and it's something that's so subtle that a lot of people don't realize it's happening.
subtle to some but pretty obvious to others. It is like he is saying 'hey we are both for change so you don't have to vote for the black guy you can vote for me, the white guy' but in his case he is actually yellowish green (literally and figuratively).
It can be hard to read sarcasm online. I hope to god people don't really call others sexist pig in liptsick liberals when they are serious, but unforutunately, now I think about it, it could happen. I am so sick of McCain and Palin saying whatever platitudes they want, totally contrary to their positions, and having so many swallow it hook line and sinker. I am really worried about where my daughters and I are going to be in the near future. This is too serious to be stuck in folksy land!
Saying John McCain knows about the economy, is like saying George W. Bush will go down as the greatest president in the history of the U.S. And everyone knows that Bush fucked this country with a barbed wire dick and still banging it out, while we are going through a recession. Oh Yeah! let McCain tell it "The economy is fine"
I've never heard Cindy give a shout out to any of the employees who worked hard to make her father's business a success though I've heard all about how proud she is of them making successes of themselves. That's the difference with Obama. Both he and his wife understand that they worked hard, but also there's an element of "but for the grace of God..." They actually still remember good, hard working people who struggled so they don't assume that if you aren't making it, you deserve poverty.
Am I the only one who finds it odd that the same people who say that women can't be trusted not to frivolously choose abortion when it is major surgery with risks to them also say that the people on Wall Street can be trusted not to take whatever money they can get? Isn't John McCain enjoying his houses while other people live out of cars? How can he not understand the CEO's with golden parachutes not caring about someone's notion of implied social contracts?
The Republican war on the labor force continues. The reason they call it the American Dream is because you have to be asleep to believe it.
For the ignorant but verbal Tea Party apologists of free market capitalism, opposing corporate greed is heresy. In the face of growing disparity between wealth and mere subsistence, between corporate control of government and our own civic impotence, the wizards behind the curtain do everything in their power to keep us asleep.

@skorpionsks ACTUALLY he makes $400K/year with a $50K expense allowance which has been fixed since 2001. He's the freakin' president...don't you think he needs security??? More now that ever with people like you and these ignorant, racist nut jobs out here! And yes, he's more in touch with the common than any other president...he's been on the ground helping people in need and didn't come from some wealthy family like drunken Bush that put a platinum spoon in his mouth....you're welcome!
bdockery05 1 year ago
@bdockery05 When did bush even come into my comment? Everything is about bush and racism with this bunch. Fact is you dont get to be the president without rubbing shoulders with some really nasty people that dont have the 'common person' interests at heart. Take that however you want. The guy is clearly a plant by some group of powerful financial interests, not by the people. The only reason people get into politics is the massive ego trip.
skorpionsks 1 year ago
@skorpionsks It's not about Bush and racism...it's about the FACT that we have a group of Republicans who have rallied behind the idea to defeat everything democratic. Not only that, the same issues Republicans raise so much hell about now are the same things that they were silent about when BUSH and the Republican lead House and Senate had power. Too many politics...it's all about getting elected & going with what will keep them in Washington vs. doing what's in the best interest of the people

diane1261 3 years ago
Only one problem with regulation. The government is not smarter than the free market. By the time the government even knows about a problem the market has already regulated itself. After Bear Stearns announced their losses in Aug 2007, the market immediately quit writing subprime mortgages. Why? Because there were no buyers for subprime MBS. The market always regulates itself. It's when government interferes that we have problems. The Federal Reserve is the main culprit by keeping interest 2low
