I wish someone would find the Zenith 1966 25 inch color TV model with the wood ralling in the back and flat legs (called "The Stockbridge"); square screen, and Space Command 600 remote control. That was The Taj Mahal of 1960's color TV's in my opinion!
does this picture tube have that same "cataract" thing going on you gave instruction on how to repair on an earlier model tv? Reason I asked, the edges all seem yellowed.
I heard that the discoloration around the picture tube is actually radiation. Seven years ago, I was given a Zenith tube type color TV and it had that problem. Sadly, I threw it away.
I still have my grandmother's 1966 23" Zenith walnut finished danish modern tube color console very similar to yours. It also has the discoloration around the picture tube. It has straw like speaker grill cloth instead of the wood panels. It has two 6x9 speakers, two tweeters, and separate bass and treble controls. She did not order the space command as it was a rather high option at the time. I think the tv was almost 600.00 with out the space command It still works.
that mahogany one was a mistake delivery and we just held onto it till one of the other ones showed up-the color kept going off-then there was the 8-mile wide RCA .....
much as i love zeniths(have 3-a '67 b/w,71 avanti,89 system 3)most stupid thing ever-the 1970 'color command' control, which was just a renamed contrast control, and the much-used color level was relegated to the 'enclosed area'
I agree. I too have brought up my dislike for that control. It was never understood by the customer and it killed CRTs by over driving them as the contrast would be brought way up in which to compensate for weak color. They had the "chroma level" control too in the other control panel, but I dont think customers ever knew what to do with it. I keep that color commander control as low as possible and then just adjust the chroma control to bring the color to proper levels.
so is the 'color command'control more than a renamed, relocated color knob?we had a mahogany 23"while waiting for our parade of avantis(broadway dept store messed up and we kept getting the wrong ones-and the new '71 chassis kept going out-our 3rd or 4th avanti was finally good.then there's the $3000. charge card bill(never credited for the broken/wrong tv's)
I remember that set well it had 2.2 meg resistors that would change value slightly and the set would loose color burst and go into rainbows. you change those three rsistors it would look great
Yep, the 12A12C52 was the beginning of the "dura-modules". This particular chassis has just one, the 9-27 chorma module. Its one of my favorite sets. Im watching it as I type this.
allso you get alot of local anlog stations were i live thers only 4 or five and they don`t all come in clear except ctv because the transmiter is down the street acouple of blocks from my house.
I used to have a Mitsubishi color TV made in 1984 which worked great for a while. After I dusted the inside of the TV, the picture turned blurry. Then I stopped using that piece of shit.
OK, I understand now. The clicking is the hammer striking the aluminum rod for the corresponding TV remote function in which an ultrasonic frequency is generated. Its an entirely mechanical remote control.
Wow! Remote control?!? That must have been super special back then. I like the style of these older consoles rather than the ones from the mid 70's to 80's.
My mother has A tv similar to this one and in nearly 40 years of use the only problems it had where dirty video controls and the picture tube needed A boost other than that it still works!:)
Its called "green halo". The camera immage makes it look worse than it really is. The PVA which bonds the lens to the face of the CRT breaks down in the presence of oxygen and the end result is the discoloration. You will see green halo on EVERY zenith Tv of this era that has its orignal CRT. It can be corrected, but you need to be very careful. This TV isnt that bad, so I left it alone.
We had a Panasonic color TV that was only a year older than this, but it had VHF/UHF knobs. It only lasted 19 years.
Some of the pricier models from back then lasted one hell of a long time. My grandparents had a VHF-only color TV that was still running in early 2003, when they actually managed to sell it.
Absolutely disgusting that PBS stations are keeping their logos on the screen now- they were supposed to be a relief from everything that's wrong with commercial TV! Sorry that your classic TVs have to see how bad TV has become; analog channels going off the air next year will be doing them a favor!
Mom & Dad had a Zenith console when I was very young. I thought it was ugly( was also quite scared of it at the time). I remember it having a large door covering the controls with a fake one on the other side. Had cloth in the doors that was yellow looking. Had a single knob tuner with those flash card style numbers.

With that remote, never quite sure if you've just lowered the volume or snapped something inside.

He/she is saying that the remote control clicking sounds like it breaking inside.

What with the discoloration of the picture tube at the beginning? I see that effect in old TV picture tubes on occasion.

After some 15 years of daily use it developed a black bar at the bottom of the screen. Mom & Dad decided to replace it so its long gone.
Wandering if you could tell me more about that set.
