You're quite right, but it is also b/c he doesn't love her. He is grateful, responsible, protective, everything but loving for her, b/c he's always had another woman in his heart. He thought he could, and tried to make a happy family happen---like the one his parents had, but he didn't have the love, which is clear to her. So she tried to control/change him her way, in the hope of seeing her importance for him. Of course that is simply not gonna happen in any marriage.
