Well, Valve is a larger group than the Black Mesa Team, and imagine them REMAKING the whole Half-life, everything from scratch (not the engine). They have to maker animations,coding,textures,map­s,music,sounds,voice acting, voice recording, online multiplayer(DM), characters, designs, weapons, art, models, and etc, and making it good, and releasing it for free, and they arn't getting paid. How long do you think that would take?

It isn't a mod any more it's a "total conversion" - the next step up from a mod as you no longer need to have aready installed any of the source engine games in order to run black mesa - which is a bonus for some.

VALVe isn't a twisted company. They said it themselves that Half Life was to be remade by the fans. Not VALVe, but the fans. VALVe has been with the team every step of the way. This is a free mod and remains as such as stated by VALVe and the developers. VALVe told them to rename it to Black Mesa instead of Black Mesa: Source so no one would be confused into thinking that it was a commercial product.

There's something called Licencing.

For game makers to distribute a fully blown game at a price, they would have to pay by the bucketloads for the rights to sell.

But by distributing this as a free modification, it's easy to distribute their own content.

It's not Steam or Valve that develop this mod, it's a bunch of gamers, like you and me, that decided to put effort to make this :)

Valve have got more important things to attend to I think.

The mod isn't out and these guys aren't professional game makers, they are basing this game entirely off Half Life 1. They're just making look and feel a lot better than what the original did.

I do believe if Valve were to hire anyone it would be game makers that make their own games.

The reason is this: You think that Black Mesa Source Team is the same all these years? No... it's almost every month someone leaves the team and someone joins. That's how mod developing works. Just look, currently Black Mesa Source has over 70 developers, how could all of them keep an eye on each other? They don't work in a studio, so some of them get tired of the mod and leave, and a job is open! In other words, not every model (and other stuff) in this mod is done by the current modeler.

Do you know the reason why people leaves? Because they dont get paid and therefore either loose their motivation or just doesnt feel "compelled" to continue working with it. If a bunch of those guys joined Valve they probably wouldnt leave.
