The film is a wonderful satire on modern life, its superficialities, its cowardices. And yet by the end it achieves an incredible pathos. The masters of comedy know the power of sympathy. Chaplin's mentor, Dan Leno, advised Charlie in his early days, "Pathos, Charlie, always pathos."
The motif of the hands in the film is great, and points the way to the theme of the film, the search for authentic connection of one human being to another. We are still searching...
I hated the trailer and I hated this movie in general. Even though I had a few Budweisers before watching this film, I still didn't understand it. There was one bright spot: Joseph Cotten's performance. I am shocked as to why the Academy didn't give him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor that year (1968). A classic example of why the AMPAS isn't hip.
@EricandDish No award cuz he's like Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance Chauncey Yellow Robe, became suspicious of Long Lance & alerted the studio.Long Lance could not explain his heritage. An investigation revealed that his dad had not been a chief. Neighbors from his town thought his background was African ancestry. Thou the studio did not publicize its investigation, the accusations led many of his socialite acquaintances to abandon him, they said "We're so ashamed! We entertained a n!gger!"
@EricandDish Cotton didn't get an award because he had African American blood. The Academy wasn't interested in the same controversy that happened with Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance Chauncey (he ended up committing suicide when they found out he had black blood).
Thanks for posting this, more a teaser than a trailer!
Along with liberals losing their marbles, Petulia features killer performances by Big Brother(Roadblock) - Janis wailing at the posh Fairmount Hotel, snarly riffs by James Gurley; + the Grateful Dead at their most photogenic, Pigpen in full SS biker regalia on the dance floor with a stand-up Vox Continental (or Farfisa) a great strobe lit fish-eye lens shot of Garcia's fret and Lesh screaming in synch with an ambulance siren...
Um, is someone forcing you to watch Petulia? Generally speaking, if a person doesn't enjoy a trailer, it is not advisable to sit through the full feature. Duh!
This is probably the worst trailer I have ever seen from any movie in any year. Because I didn't know what the hell they were talking about and the announcer says the movie begins in the MIDDLE of act two and ends at the end of act one! As a result, this is one movie I am not looking forward to.
A fabulous movie - and a virtual historic document of San Francisco during the "Summer of Love." Now if someone would post the entire Grateful Dead performance of "Viola Lee Blues" from the film, I'll be a happy camper.
INCREDIBLE! WAY AHEAD!

One of the quintessential '60s films, completely of the era.

The DVD has a good explanation of how the film works, which helps fill in the gaps after you have seen it. It's clever and fun.
