  • "you know.."

  • good tips very simple

  • Question!! I use the "average" size paper, but I use a ruler to make the pages smaller on the page.... is this okay? (I make it the size I would imagine the book to be)

  • Hey man, what pencil sharpener did you use?!?!

I'd love to get a point that long, would come in handy!

  • who the hell is that 1 dislike?

  • @mayonakanoromansu Honestly I think it was I lol. True story, I think it was like 3am in mornin' and I slipped and thought I hit the like button. It was either this clip or one of his, drawing Riley Freeman's clips, I can't member haha my bad.

  • WOAH UR THE THE THE CO DIRECTOR AND CHARACTER DESIGHN FOR THE BOONDOCKS I LUV THAT SHOW I SWEAR TY FOR THE IDEA IF THAT TY SOOOOO MUCH I LUV THAT SHOW

  • What kind of pens do you use?

  • you know:)

  • i think the #2 pencil is a 2b pencil, and i think when you said mechanical pencil, you meant a lead holder (mechanical pencils dont use that twirling sharpener). also, there are no lead pencils anymore, they all use graphite :) GREAT VIDEO THOUGH! just being a stickler of a commenter (i worked in pearl paint for a few years)

  • WOW thanks for the tips i have everything exept the light box~

i bet they are expensive and i kinda am young to start doing a manga but i will first think of the basics=D

i have toruble drawinf the really small backround people -_-

  • "uuh uuumm uuuuuuh um uuh uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmm hm*cough**cough*"

  • I'm sure other have said this, but I definitely feel inspired to continue working on becoming a comic artist, more so still working on traditional mediums instead of dropping it and going to digital.

Its refreshing to hear some different opinions on what "weapons" to use, I used to get some lip from people saying to use certain things, but most of the stuff, save the lightbox, I'm used to using regularly. Hopefully, I can get on the grind one day like you are, lol

  • thanks for the videos!.. love your work

  • yo bro...thx alot..xD

  • another black brother hop me ,you and cocoman get the best out of wat we do

p.s no idont have any thing but if u add me ul see my skillz soon

  • i was wondering, what kinda software are they using for key animation there in the Animation studio? i hope you can shed some light in that part.

  • @leseant What happened?Not making anymore videos?

  • "You know"

    yup i know :)

  • Comment removed

  • you can get that paper in wal mart lol

  • WOW!!!I HOPE THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO BE AS AMAZING AS YOU SOME DAY!!!<3

  • Keep on brother! You're an inspiration, hope to see more of you in the future.

  • Great artistic info & artwork. This is very inspiring.

  • Not to mention those 11x17 bristols are b*tch to scan properly without a super-sized scanner--I still use bristol sometimes, just not in that size... Bristol is nice as a paper 'cause it inks nice, but if you're not going to ink, there's really no point to it other than the weight.

Oh, and folks should know--don't waste your money on that blueline crap that's all ruled out for you--you should have a ruler, do it yourself!

  • Have to get me one of those clear rulers, not to mention a lightbox.

See you back at DA, and have fun in Korea!

  • 8.5x11 you say... That's what's up man. I always felt that with that size paper I had more control with the lines and shape than with the larger paper size as you stated. Saves time and energy for me. This just reassures me that I wasn't doing something "wrong" with comic pages.

Need to get a hold on them blue as I tend to have lines everywhere lol. Thanks for sharing :)

  • this is great advice dude, thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to give us young aspiring artist some knowlege on the trade.

  • It's astounding how you manage to make the time to respond and post videos in such an intense work environment!

Also great to have a foreigner working inside a Korean/Japanese studio that isn't a complete enigma to the public (e.g. Jamie Vickers).

I've looked on YouTube and your blog and I can't find any (key) animation you've done since that Nissan ad. There anything to point me at, or have you only been doing pre-production until now? Any idea when your current work will be screened?

  • @BruceLeedar Jamie Vickers and i are acquaintances. He is currently working at TItmoouse studios in Hollywood, working on a new project for Disney. We speak often and know the same anime directors that visit here in Seoul. Great talent. I think he's moving back to Japan, though. thanks!

  • yo, i was wondering you know since your a self taught artist, when did you start animation?

  • please look at my videos and interviews for past work inquiries!

    thanks bro!!!

  • thanks bro. keep watching!

  • the blue is great, especially for me, since i can be a bit sloppy in my initial pencils. i can hit it with inks or graphite, then scan it b&w

  • yeah , blue is my preferred choice. It just works for me.

  • @Vid

Thanks for the info on your tools of choice.

People always want to know about materials well versed artist use, I used to be the same... but one thing I have learned from all of my reading and watching of "How to?" topics is..

It's 95% skill.. and 5% material. If your a master, no matter what kind of materials you use, your works still going to look awesome.

  • yup.

Some artists let the tools define them. It's nice to have a dependency on your tools, but dont make them a crutch...

thanks you kindly for the comments.

  • Thanks for posting this. I asked about this not too long ago either on here or deviant art, but again, thanks. Knowing you can work on 8x11 paper is very reassuring. I was always told in school you need 11x17. I now feel that I can truly start on my comics now.

  • Ashely Woods draws on cardboard! Katsuya terrada draws on crumpled paper!

be an artist! not a slave to your tools!

  • Thanks man! I have so many questions for you but don't seem this is the time. I remember hearing that you did an animation yourself. I would love to see some of the animation if you still have any. Can't wait for CB!

  • thanks bro CB is coming.

    Animation work too!

    peace!

  • Lesean, this was very helpful. I can't believe you use a normal 8.5x11 paper, that's great. I am really interested in seeing on of you tight cleaned up pencil pages. I usually ink so I was just wondering how it looks when your finished. Also how do you not get a lot of smudging from the pencil lead on the finished product. Thanks!

  • Yep, 8.5X11. its that easy for me. I'll get into some clean up in future vids. I'll explain those tips in the next vid.

    thanks.

  • Nice how to video. I use all those tools BUT the blue pencil wan i draw.

  • Thanks for the vid. It's always a treat. Can you please bless us with a vid on *starting penciler pay-rates, industry problems and maybe how we can change the game.

    You can thank me later

    Khan

  • thnx alot for making this vid. i love ya art and watch ya stuff at DA as well , keep them coming and good luck in seoul...

  • thanks man, keep watching!

  • Thank you

  • Amen! Its so truthful about the paper. I used to use 8.5 x 11, but coming to Germany I started with A4 cause for me it fits right with drawing comic pages. But back in the day, I was always told, you have to use "Manga" or "comic" paper to draw comics on. And I thought it was BS, its really unnecessary. I felt better with the normal letter like paper and some places made me think that I'd never get out there without switching. Also about types of tools as well.

  • I would really like to see how you take the process into digital media<like with a tablet. Like what programs do you use? How important is photoshop to your work? Would you recomend a cintiq ( if you have even use one). Or are you a traditional samurai? SHOW US YOUR KUNG FU' lesean lol

  • this video is the process.

the only digital media happens with my colorist. I don't used digital media ( outside of scanning my images and sending them to my colorist). I don't need to. not for comics or illustration. not for my process.

I work with a colorist as i mentioned at the end of this video

    thanks!.

after me, my colorist does the rest. he does not do videos.

  • Cool vid man very insightful. I havent seen a lot people that uses a normal pencil when drawing, which is pretty cool.

Anyways I'll be looking forward to seeing your next video.

Oh btw, what other music artist do you listen to when you draw?

  • yep. simple. its about the artist not so much the tools.

i listen to all types of music.

  • Thank you once again but i do have a question y blue lead im noticing alot of artist use blue lead

  • no problem.

I explain why i use blue lead pencil at 3:36

    i hope that helps.

  • @lesseant

I thought that artist use a blue pencil SO wan they scan it into the computer it is essayer to clean ups.

  • Like i mentioned in the video, This is how i work. MY preference. I cannot speak for other artists.

I use the blue because of how it feels. It's just a coincidence that i can also use it inmy concept/layout/thumbnail stage.

    thanks.

  • Thats fare. Most tool i use are from the dollar store.

  • whatever works.

It's about the artist. not the tools.

  • Thats so true. It took me years to learn that Lol. I love your style btw.thats actually how i started watching the boon docks coz of the style.

  • dope!!! thanks homie,

stay tuned for more and thanks for subscribing,

    peace!

  • He prefers it because of preferable shape dynamics the pencil have also many artist use colored pencils as rough and they ink the finishing with black or they do it on digital media, like CS, then they just make the colored lines invisible. The rough sketch purpose simply.

  • many thanks lesean u hit on some really good points. you think you could do one on planning out issues or novels.

  • not really.

but i'll focus on pages and tips on drawing.

novels and stuff is too much time i dont have on showing.

    cheers!

  • I was wondering if I can also use a blue animation as well, but it turns out my sharpener was crap, so it'll kill the led of the pencil.

I'm pretty much stuck with the blue animation pencil though, it's pretty useful for now. I should see if I can get a blue animation pencil first thing at College.

Thanks for the clip dude :).

  • no prob, man. keep watching and good luck!

  • dude that would hella help to show us how to set up a page cause i get hella fustrated whith that some times

  • watch my last video :)

    good luck!

  • good stuff! definitely will post this on my blog!

  • thank you sir!!!!!!!!!

  • If you can do a video on analyzing movement that would be great. Good luck in Seoul!

  • Thanks again! :D

  • LeSean, making your own videos on youtube is awesome. I'll watch 'em all.

  • thanks man, i'll keep making them if people keep watching!

  • sick.. I still use pencils and ink pens..

Thank for all the tips!!! keep them coming!

  • yesssir.

  • I really enjoyed watching this leseant, ill try out some of these methods ASAP.

  • for sure, lemme know how it goes.

    peace and good luck!

  • Wow i cant believe you dont ink!! But it goes to show that its more about the artist then the materials. Great video keep them coming!! Qoute " standard ruler... um i mean eraser" Man that was so funny! your awesome lesean!

  • technology, sir :)

Inking exists so that the artwork shows up in the printing. Nowadays if you clean your lines up enough, you dont need an inker, just drop the levels on CS on your black lines.

    thanks!

  • I just use a wacom pen... thanx for the video les, looking foreword to the next video.

  • thank you.

  • I love your work. You are very inspiring for a young African American artist such as myself. Plz keep posting vidz =D

  • thanks, coco.

just spreadin some knowledge.... gotta keep the game moving!

  • @cocoman896 SHINTO896!
