The Schweinfort ball bearing campaign, going after 52% of that German industry, failed because the Germans had stored ball bearings and continued getting them from the Swiss. After Ploesti was put out of the war, the Allies bombed synthetic fuel refineries, which were initially about 40% of the German supply and the source of most of their aircraft fuel because they could easier jack up the octane of synthetic fuel than natural petroleum. Success here was what put Germany out of the war in '45.
A typical German factory making tanks, planes, etc. had a high ceiling and a floor laden with machine tools. When bombs hit the factory the roof typically collapsed onto the tools below, which were largely not destroyed. The Germans then removed the debris, carted off the tools, and spread out the factory into units too small to be legitimate bombing targets. This means that at some point the bombing campaign would have been meaningless without an Allied capability of bombing the whole country.
The last major target of the bombing campaign was Dresden, a beautiful city at the time housing about 2/3 of a million refugees from other bombed German cities. Barracks there were the only legitimate military target. After the smoke cleared, on a hill outside the city a huge British Petroleum tank farm sat completely undamaged, so I dare anyone to tell me that politics were not involved in deciding what was to be bombed or left alone. One particular resort town was spared for later Allied use.
@LordGodofMercy, about the BP tank farm, I'm not sure where I found that, maybe from the Strategic Bombing Survey online, or a YouTube video, or in a book. I'm a former military pilot who has been researching WW II for years. You may try but you can not divorce politics from military decisions. The European bombing campaign cost more American lives than all the Marines lost in all the island campaigns. Before deep fighter escort by the P-51s it was something approaching suicide for the crews.
Europe is very respectful of authority and tradition relative to the U.S. After Hitler's October 1923 Beer Hall Putsch in Munich failed, during his prison time he decided to forgo trying to take over Germany by revolt and instead take control legitimately, which he did Jan 30,1933. At that point through fomenting pogroms against the hated Jews and the Germans voting to give him 4 years of dictatorship to change things, the Germans followed what they considered legitimate orders and directives.
Who has the heart to bomb 800000 civilian including babies, children, women, fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, granpas, granmas, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, entire famillies, entire neighbourhoods, and including all kinds of pets. You have to be worse than an animal to be able to do that. Hitler and his generals were hiding in bunkers safe and sound. is there more criminal than killing all those lives? Poor civilians, I hope u all in heaven, and the others are in hell.
Incendiary bombs dropped on hamburg were white phosphorus bombs. People with burn from phosphorus were plunging into the Elbe, and continued to catch fire whenever they go out of the water, they could choose to drown by sheer exhaustion and pain or let even a minor burn wound to eat them alive on the bank.
This weapon is so atrocious it was banned after the war... a "country" used it recently.
First her Hitler air force under cover of Franco air force was boming Spanish cities doing the civil war using the new Ju-88. Spanish C/V was verycrul.Noboodygive f.. about civilians german pilots where lorning how to bomb open citis. that practise "total war" they used on europe"s cities. Starting in 1939
Surely Germany's bombing campaigns against Poland, Russia Britain, Holland etc are also critical components of any consideration of WW2 bombing policies in general. The first bombing act of the war was the destruction of Warsaw in Sept 1939 which cost 240,000 lives - about ten times more than Dresden, the final bombing act of the war.
Napoleon thought like you. He was very clever and anyone whose views differed from his had to be an idiot. That's the way all the inmates in madhouses think too!

@tonnerrealg those civilians were responsible for the rise of hitler, and his continued prosecution of the war.
they could have protested in mass numbers to end the war. they could have refused to work in armament factories. but they didn't.
they were happy when the poles, greeks, british, french, dutch and norwegians were being bombed to bits, not so keen when it was in their back yard.

@tfifriday1
wow you are a retard are you?
you just dont protest living under a dictatorship, you vanish in the basements of the Gestapo or inside a camp
all the major opposition was gone after 1934, the night of the long knives
the democrats, social democrats, church men, communists and journalists were in the camps or dead

No, they couldn't. And that's why they didn't.
Would you have had any guts to resist if you had lived there? I doubt it.
Yet there was an ample underground resistance who hid Jews and others at odds with the Nazi government.

this is an amazing, and well thought out, deeply researched 'lil doco'.
As a 50ish history writer, this addreses so many complex considerations made by many 'desperate' people. Really great doco.
