Autumn in New York with "Tenderly" and "Remember" is recorded in Los Angeles, April, 1952. Charlie Shavers (tp), Flip Phillips (ts), Oscar Peterson (p), Barney Kessel (g), Ray Brown (b), JC Heard (d).
The disc is re-recorded on "Giants of Jazz", 1989 as "Billie Holiday and her orchestra from 1952 to 1955".
Holiday at her best with Peterson. The greatest rendition, I think, of this elegant tune, that no one, before and later, made so glittering, shimmering, so mingled with pain, so jaded, roues, so divine, so good to live it again... First issued in RECITAL , the magnificent Clef/Verve album, produced by Norman Granz, recorded in 1952/53 featuring all jazz superstars. Absolutely Superb
A true classic, so moving, so beautiful-I can't get over how wonderful this recording is....Billie Holliday is a true legend who endured so much yet recorded some of the best music ever...Love it!!!
Also, a very calming and beautiful video to accompany this masterpiece, pure 100% excellence. the 3 who disliked this just can't appreciate how marvelous this truly us...pure heaven this was, thank you.
Beautiful song, one of my favourites, and great pictures of Cologne... even I am fron Duesseldorf, autumn makes even Cologne looking great... somehow ;-)
My favorite song from Billie; I heard a guy talk about this song and how he wanted it played at his funeral. I fell in love with it and since it's about my hometown, that's a plus.
@Cludence to know how horrible her life was for her, its hard to believe that something so beautiful could issue forth from pure tragedy... she suffered so we could enjoy.
This rendition is beautiful and sad at the same time. Between Billie's vocal, the spare burt relaxed backup, I don't know whether to dream or to cry.
i do believe Ms. Holiday's sound is so haunting on this selection because no one can match her "guttural" or throat-ish pronunciation of "New Yaaawk". I know that is what draws me to this version over and above any other. truly masterful.
This is the definitive version. The Sinatra version came on to my iPod shuffle and I immediately turned it off. Thats why I'm listening to it now and reading your ridiculous comment.
One of the greatest vocal interpretations ever... so full of love and tender, and yet she can't hide the uncontrollable pain and solitude that pursued her in her entire carreer.
@ConfortinDEADHORSE Yes. Her background really turns my stomach, though her journey fills me with great respect and admiration. She was a pure natural talent. And even though here fate must have been incredibly painful, she has brought much love to the fate of others. I'm very glad I found her music. If she was alive today, I'm certain she'd be very happy to know that so many people have fallen helplessly in love with her music.
Oscar Peterson's piano lays down a beautiful foundation for Holiday's genius. She was said to prefer Teddy Wilson to Peterson, hinking the latter played too much, but Oscar's work here fits perfectly. Two great artists at work.
Well Tatum played the notes, enough that Oscar was intimidated by him and felt uncomfortable playing in his presence. Tatum told Bud Powell that anything you can play with your right hand I can play with my left.
There are some recordings where OP is incredibly tasteful with elegant comping. He sounds nothing like the pianist in his own trio settings. I recommend Louis Armstrong with the Oscar Peterson Trio; incredible. The trio is sooo tasteful.
Everyone was intimidated, and is still intimidated by Tatum. His nickname given by other jazz musicians was, 'God'. That about says it all. Tatum was however stretching the truth with that comment (I've heard that too). Tatum couldn't really play bebop for one.
Absolutely perfect! Making a greatest job on her own greatest talent, miss Holiday confirm her greatness with this headwork, a masterpiece of synthesis and expression in music. Her musical intelligence is here at the highest level a talent can be.
I think this is the best take of all miss Holiday's Autumn in N.Y. recording... great autumn in N.Y. it's good to live it... again. Listening to the previous 2 or 3 takes, with Holiday building step by step her interpretation of the tune, we really can understand what a kind of headwork was coming out from her genius.
...and this is the difference between a 'diva' and an artist.
Whitney who?
