I had a 1990 V-Max that had this same thing done to it....removal of the plates on the back of the exhaust. I LOVED THE SOUND! The stock pipes look so sweet, and I absolutely HATE it when they are replaced by aftermarket exhaust systems. Great vid, thanks for posting!
Thanks mate. Have now completed this mod to get me by until i order my stainless system. MUCH better than the stock sound, and no power loss here either :D
You are right, I did remove the cap. I drilled 3/8" holes between the rivet holes then later opened them up to 1/2". I would suggest this method so you can see the sound differences. I also drilled the inside of the muffler. I used a 1" hole saw on a long extension to reach the baffle at the very bottom. Hope this helps. Enjoy!
Hello, I would like to know what you did to "modify" the stock exhaust. It looks like you removed the chrome trim by drilling out the rivets. Did you do anything inside the can itself? Please email me with help on this. I would love to talk to you about what I can do to my stock exhaust. Best regards.

Did you need to rejet / resync your carbs? Was there any power loss?

Did you need to rejet / resync your carbs for this? Was there any power loss?

@taavinen
No re-jetting needed unless you change the complete header system. Didn't notice any power loss or gain. Just more noise. Thanks.

You should put the "endplates" back. Just put few washers between the plate and muffler. That should do the trick.

@cumminski
I did re-install the end plates but didn't like the cracking sound I got. Not for me but I know others like it. Thanks.

At low rpm's sound nice but when you roll on the throttle...
That's a matter of opinion
