  • Super interesting look into the world of 3d production

  • LMAO! 4:27

  • OMG...I cant wait to see this, roll on December.

Was funny, the artists doing the 3D stuff, and when the 2 pictures get overlaid...couldn't actually see what they were on about, but you could see the finished picture was not totally in focus. Like when i saw this one film and i at first was watching it in the cinema without 3d specs on. Was that Thor film, if i recall.

  • These guys actually care about the 3D part, unlike the CGI injected films like transformers and crap that convert AFTER filming

  • I trust Peter Jackson on the 3D issue. I personally don't usually like 3D, but I trust that it will be good if Peter/his team are in charge

  • John, Paul, George and Ringo?!! oh I love it!

  • is this only going to be in 3d? or 2d to?

  • I'm just gona watch it in 2d cause 3d gives me headache. Love 3D tho, awesome experience for those who doesn't get a headache:)

  • Wow Got painted in blue and red

  • Why is all the artwork blurred out? (around 8:32)

  • @rOcKcHiCk1062 spoilers i guess

  • @rOcKcHiCk1062 Well, they have to leave out some things, and not reveal to much

  • @rOcKcHiCk1062 they dont want to reveal any spoilers of the storyboard probably

  • December 2012 will be the End of the world because all the people who didn't get to see "The Hobbit" Premier will Riot!

  • Actually we see 60 frames a second TOTAL. Each eye sees roughly 30 frames each.

  • The problem with 3D nowadays is that 90% of movies are shot with one camera and they do half-assed post-processing making the 3D go INTO the screen and not OUT of the screen. That's just exaggerated depth perception and BULLSHIT 3D.

THIS, however, is different. You have two cameras, meaning it will come OUT of the screen like GOOD 3D is supposed to (like Avatar).

  • If it's being shot in 3D, do we HAVE to see it in theaters as such? To me, I don't really give two shits about 3D movies. Wearing the glasses gets annoying after awhile.

And if its in 3D, does that mean it'll be sold on DVD as such? I don't have a 3D TV with $75 glasses. Total waste of money.

  • @Anathar88 I do hope not.. But hey, I think for once this might actually be a worthwile cinematic experience, with all the efforts that's being put into it, it's just amazing. Best thing would be, and probably will be, a 3D release in theatres, and a blu-ray release with 2D and 3D options

  • I love lotr and i think the hobbit will be better omg cant wait for december

  • please tell me there non head inducing version of the film coming out

  • It's a shame they don't put this much effort into all 3D productions. I'm getting tired of lazy, post production conversions, just to cash in on it.

  • 03:55 this is amazing... omg want to be there

  • 3D is a gimmick that detracts from the enjoyment of film. Far from what Mr Jackson believes (or would like us to be convinced of), 3D actually inhibits immersion in a film. The whole 3D thing is utter tosh - image quality is worse, the technology is intrusive and adds absolutely nothing the story - there's always the obligatory "3D shots" - thing zooming at camera, thing floating about infront of characters - that is seemingly added just for the 3D effect. Again - intrusive and pointless.

  • @VainEldritch I think some of what you're saying is accurate, but it's a new medium just like CGI was when it first came out. Remember how almost every movie had ridiculously overused CGI effects circa mid 1990s? I recall being amazed that the movie Dragonheart was able to use the effects tastefully/convincingly (the dragon had personality and allowed you to connect with it). I think the 3D craze will die down and, concurrently, filmmakers will learn how to use it artfully to tell the story.

  • Cant wait to see a movie running at 48fps, must be better for stereoscopic cinema and 3D TV's, Love the video!

  • This is looking fantastic! Would they care if just one red went missing?

  • I've never seen a movie in 3D... and I want this to be my first! Can't wait!!

  • LOL GANDALF WITH 3D GLASSES whats next? lol

  • is it just me or does peter jackson always have coffee every video

  • I love seeing Tall Paul in a lot of these Vlogs.

  • Just fucking trust Peter Jackson to do this good.

  • I really want to see Hobbit(and its behind the scenes). I remember from LOTR Behind the scenes that PJ had a lot problems with a missing 3D film from his camera and that he got a 4D camera too.

  • man, I'm so fuckin' much waiting for this one...

  • At 8:40 - 3D concept art. YEAH RIGHT? So ridiculous.

  • Well If Frodo say it`s good, I`m sold:D

  • 3D Yeeees!

  • Unlucky if you only have 1 eye!

  • 02:37 lol, he is in it :P

  • It will be good in 3D as they are shooting it stereo as opposed to a conversion afterwards.

  • I feel sorry for the editor. I'm sure he's going to go mental after all the editing.

  • 2:36 jeej frodo! :DD And i think its awesome its gonna be 3D!!! i <3 LoTR!

  • i love how peter jackson always looks like he just woke up XD

  • Normal format >>>> 3D

  • i dun like 3D :(

  • RED cameras changed the industry :)

  • 2:32 Gandalf is watching in 3D

  • Comment removed

  • I hope they also release it in normal format, i don't care at all about 3D.

  • Badass gandalf with 3 - D glasses

  • i dont mind 3d. avatar was pretty sweet but this looks amazing

  • @wentchingirg Avatars special effects were done by Weta Digital, the same crew who did the Lord of the Rings and the ones doing the Hobbit

  • Graham McTavish plays a dwarf but he dwarves almost everyone of the crew

  • @Idsz Irony at its best, huh? ;)

  • Man I love watching Alan Lee and John Howe draw together :) As a young artist myself I am really amazed at their works ! And I am suprised how they can draw the exact same drawing looking at each other's work ! Just awesome.

  • @DrBlork actually, among the majority of the hobbit fans, this has been considered a well prepared prank by peter, john and alan on the fans ;-) But great how people still fall for that.

  • @TonyBarksWB

I don't think so. I have the sketch books of the Lord of the Rings trilogy including drawings from Alan Lee and John Howe and it's same style. They really draw good, I don't quite understand what you mean :)

  • @DrBlork They draw well, of course they do. But no way would they waste their time for 3D sketches. Even if they did,it would be much easier to let one of them draw one picture and then use a computer to shift the different levels in z-space. Besides, it is impossible to draw the exact same image twice just by the eye. It doesn't work, as an artist, you know that. And last but not least, it makes absolutely no sense wearing the red-and-blue-3D-glasses while drawing a one-colour picture.

  • jej new lord of the rings film :)

  • they named each camera? wow. does this commonly happen in movie production?

  • Concept art in 3D !!!! that's how you make 3D movie works.

  • nooo i dont have 3d glasses in ma home!!!!!! i will never feel the same again...

  • Silmarillion!!!:D

  • Holy shit! I rember that Jabez Olssen edited the two towers!!!!

  • I simply love watching Alan Lee and John Howe draw....they are awesome!

  • 2:37 ELIJAH!!!

  • 3d should only be allowed for movies that are going to be a visual masterpeice like the Hobbit. I'll be happy to shell out 4 extra bucks for this one.

  • that 3d artwork is bananas

  • 02:32 Gandalf in 3d glasses FUCK YEAH!

  • So they are shooting in the upcoming HD standard, nice!

  • I'm perfectly comfortable shelling out for 3D when the movie has been shot in 3D, or it's an animated film that can naturally adapt.

  • I have a pair of those red-n-blue 3d glasses and yeah, 9:45 does look cool. If you have them its important to know that the blue lens must be over the right eye and the red over the left. If its the other way around the image wont pop out in 3d.

  • EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if they will have any new music for this movie. Maybe some songs like in the book but the orchestra kind is what i really like

  • 1:53 BILBO WATSON \o

  • I don't know why everyone is freaking out about the 3D. If you don't like it, don't see it. But Peter Jackson has always embraced technology, and it's been for the better. Remember when everybody was worried about Gollum being completely digital?

  • @alto19 Indeed, if anyone would know how to do it right, it's Peter Jackson.

  • How do you acutally draw a 3d picture, im interested, and i like to draw, could you help?

  • I swore I'd never see another 3D movie after Avatar, but damn. Now I'm ready to buy my $25 IMAX ticket.

  • I am just astounded at how brilliant the individuals are who are working on this film. Any job openings? I will work for free.

  • he named his cameras. Genius!

  • when peter says "yes yes yes!"

iwas like is he watching 3D PORN? F_O

  • YAY

  • 5k??? damn, cant wait to have a 42" 5000p 3D tv so i can watch the hobbit in all it's glory

  • lmao @ gandalf wearing shades 02:31

  • on a location in new zealand... with my UNCLE :) yup, my uncle is involved in the hobbit. He makes props!

  • @Linfir cool!! I am at school for film and I love the prop department, do you think you could tell me your uncle's name?

  • @Linfir prove it. i dont no how but if you expect people to believe that, you are going to have to prove it.

  • @FantasticFilmMaker im not on location if thats what you thought... im in rainy england. My uncle is. His name is Tim Mckenzie-Watson ;)

  • Cant wait to see the battle of the 5 armies in 3D!!! Awesommee!!!!!! I just berd gasmed

  • Epic win

  • I have never seen a 3D movies that is actually 3D looking, but hopefully this movie would

  • love these blogs!!!

  • 4:32 -- 3D glasses on the skull, lol

  • Guys, they say a REAL trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will be released around Christmas! (Together with the new Sherlock Holmes movie).

    Awesome or what? Yeah man!

  • For some reason I feel like I could live on the set. I'm a medieval/middle earth nut

  • I love Peter and his teams style and philosophy for film making

  • Probably the only movie I'll actually see in 3D

  • Cant wait...cant...

  • "Are we having fun?" -"Yaaay!" 4:28 xDD

  • 2:33... gandalf with 3d glasses. 1 word, awesome!

  • I love these videos!

  • This is the first movie since Avatar that I'm actually looking forward to seeing in 3D.

  • @Pr1m3numb3r5equence

Yes, yes it does :-p I have a pair of 3D anaglyph glasses I purchased from Amazon.com, they have sunglass frames.

  • tylko nie 3 d ja pierdole !

  • tylko nie 3 d ja pierdole !

  • Alan Lee got his teeth fixed...

  • Gandalf with 3D glasses. Priceless

  • I can't wait.

  • OHHHMAAAAAAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDD

  • SWEET!!!

  • Did Jackson gain weight? Or is this old footage

  • I cant wait till I finish school i wanna work in the movie industry. Just the feel of being on the set.

  • This will be the Battlefield 3 of movies! Can't wait!

  • I HATE 3D!

  • @nemopac

Not a big fan of 3D myself either. All the other films that have been released in 3D have been conversions though, and the difference here is that it's actually being shot with 3D cameras and specialized equipment so it should actually look rather stunning. I'm rather excited to see The Hobbit in 3D on the big screen to be honest! :D 13 months to go...

  • @DistantDreamer93 wasn't avatar shot in real 3D tho, and that looked as poor as the conversions

  • @DistantDreamer93 Not only that, but the 48 frames makes it an entirely different viewing experience. I can seriously not find a film that has ever done this before, and I have trust in Peter Jackson that when he says something is visually stunning (so much so that they have to alter their techniques to shoot it), I believe in the power it can hold. Remember, these films use visual effects as a tool rather than simply being all it is.

  • @nemopac So... You hate the world? The world is in 3D. You have to say 3D Movies if you hate 3D effect in videos and so on... If you say that you hate 3D, you have to come up with an argument WHY you use a strong word as HATE. PS: Im not for 3D, neither against. Shoting in 2D and make it to 3D in post, is bad, but shoting in 3D is actually really good...

  • @nemopac latley 3d movies have been epic and theyre not the red and blues shit like thay used to be!

  • yeah thats right bitches new zealand rules!!

  • People need to stop bitching about the 3D. Peter Jackson knows what he's doing. This is how 3D should be made.

  • holy god, is that Frodo at 2:39 ?!

48fps and real 3d is gonna be epic

  • @Thejacktoth 2:36, he is Frodo!

  • Is this going to be a 2D Film also - I hope, Avatar was 2D and 3D, hope peter is doing the same.

  • 9:46 Holy sh*t it does work

  • I WANT A 5K TV!!!!!!!!

  • I've got some pairs of the 3D glasses here at home and Alan Lee's right - the drawing at 9:44 is totally in 3D with the glasses. Amazing!

  • frodo?

  • 08:43 goddamn now thats a lead

  • Bill is my dad!!!!

    funny..

  • when does the trailer come out!?

  • Two guys doing the concept art in 3D ... the same scene: one in red, one in blue, an image for each eye? As a tag team, or a jazz ensemble?! This is beyond crazy ... and I LOVE IT.

  • How hard is it for people to understand that no one is forcing them to see a movie in 3D. Its just an option.

  • Thumbs up if you're watching this over and over again :)

  • I thought at first he named me but he said pikinese. You are forgiven master Jackson

  • Gloin is fucking tall for a dwarf...

  • 00:48 I have those headphones. There the best, Trust me! ;)

  • I was so psyched to see Contagion just to see what 5k digital would look like. Now I'm imagining the same picture quality, but in 3D, 48fps, and in beautiful Jackson middle earth.

    /explodes

  • Tricky Woo!!

  • as a filmaker in training, i am learning so much more from a master storyteller like peter than my last year's class.....lol...this is so much indepth information, i am entrance by the art of telling a story by a director who is immersed in the whole process of film making.master at his best.i really hate 3d but in his hands i will give it a chance.

  • he is not a story teller . all he does is just create graphic imagery from a script. And you needn't suck up to him cos he doesn't know who you are.

  • Watching this I feel like Peter Jackson is the anti-George Lucas.

  • Disliked! Keep that 3D crap out of middle earth!

  • @Mikosch2 He's actually filming in 3d unlike 90 percent of the crap that's come out lately.

  • holy cow the drawn picture at 9:47 looks amazing with my 3d glasses on

  • people! we are watching MAGIC in the making !

  • i'm curious about what the dragon would look like... but that's gonna have to wait four blogs i guess

  • i'm glad they're putting this much detail in the film, this how 3d is supposed to be done, none of this shitty post conversion crap. higher than high res 3d camera's with film crews who are 100% committed to making the best film they can

  • december 2012? the question is are we gonna be alive by then...can't wait 4 the movie

  • I am outrageously excited.

  • 2:32 Elijah Wood is going to be in it.? How? Is old Bilbo telling him the story?

  • @onexero1

they are going to tie the movie in with lord of the rings with the birthday party for bilbo

  • @onexero1 I think he might have just been visiting the set, they seem to have an open door policy for all former actors on the set :)

  • @greizenbregen but he is dressed up like Frodo.

  • you hear all the star wars fanboys say that it was their childhood

well LOTR was MY childhood, and it looks like i will get what the starwars peeps allways wanted :) this just looks perfect

  • ....I cannot wait till December 2012!!!

  • Did anyone else spot Figwit?

  • Best Blog ever!

  • Didn't know Peter Jackson was on the 3D bandw... wait, never mind, I'm sure the movie'll be brilliant regardless

  • cool. hard at work. can't wait.

  • Only one more year whoooooooo!

  • I always wondered how they make 3D films. Thank you! :D

  • People from New Zealand are so chilled out. Are they all like that? In America we drink shitloads of coffee and stimulants and everyone's in a rush.

  • @Jahooba Yes. It's like that here in Australia, too. x3

You Americans and your busy schedules. ;)

  • i really dont care for 3D, but for u Peter ill pay for it (or ill sneak in lol)

  • fuck yea ive been waiting for this!!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this.

  • Please, no 3D!!!

  • Like if RallisP sent you here.
