how the hell do people bleed when they get hit by a canonballs. unless it shoots a leg or arm clean off your not gonna see any blood splatter. the sheer blunt force of getting hit by a cannon ball is what killed those guys. so the added puffs of blood are kinda weird
@TalonMercenary still im pretty sure you dont shoot out blood if you get hit by scrapnel. maybe it it go as fast as a bullet and wouldnt not only penetrate but leave the body aswell. and even then its not always the case. perhaps the enemy crew managed to make a shitload of headshots and the red goo you see is bits-o-brain
@strontklont dude lol it seriously would, if a cannonball burst through the ship's hull in front of you the amount of wood flying would tear a man to pieces. Theyre are not just tiny splinters either
@strontklont Watch Master and Commander, you'll see most wounds are from splinters, large and small. Blunt force wounds more often came from falling masts and pullys then from direct cannonball hits.
@ltflak Not to mention grapeshot. Imagine being hit by shotgun pellets the size of a walnut. Blood splatters is all you could scoop up from the deck if a man was hit by a few of those flying around.
@strontklont dude think abuout it if u get hit by something with tht velocity it doesnt matter if its blunt or not its gonna tear up flesh and spill blood. its just like a msuket ball, thts round but it still penettrates the flesh.
and then yea u get the splinters ud get splinters so big tht they could tear a man in half.
@shiyboy4 actually im pretty certain that if a cannonball hits you straight in the stomach it wont cut a gaping hole straight through you. i can agree with the splinters and i do think a cannonball can rip of arms and legs
@strontklont Some cannonballs had jagged edges, and some were designed to shatter on impact, sending out nails, jagged bits of metal or grape-shot. I live quite close to Portsmouth, where HMS Victory is permanently moored and have done a few tours of the ship. Trafalgar was one out country's greatest moments. x
@strontklont well there were different cannon ,,,, actually cannon is the name of one very particular gun type ,,, but any ways there were ' cannons that shot many shot or fragments for clearing decks and for dealing with infantry ,,,, as well the wood chunks that were hit by regular cannons wood fly and hit men while they were working or fighting ,,, perhaps this could be an answer for the blood pa terns ? i don't know but that could be one possible answer
@strontklont The air between decks was effectively filled with knives - flying splinters up to a few feet long - when the hull was struck. Only the odd ball coming in through a gunport would cause what you describe.
Yep, french navy was quality and well trained also, but the leadership was crippled because of the french revolution and the upcoming execution of people of noble lineage. And for example, when few decades ago in revolutionary war when french navy were dominating british navy. Treville also died before the trafalgar. So while the ships and soldiers were good, the command was destroyed by the revolution and the deaths of great commanders before it.
But anyways, I dont care who won, its history, and all winners have defeats also. I'm personally more interested about people who invent the tools what we use in war, for example henri-joseph paixhans developed shell guns, aka the big toys of artillery/navy etc.
@zenoist2 I recommend Seize the Fire, by Adam Nicolson, for a thorough discussion of these factors and more - he mentions that the British killed something like 10 times more men than they lost, which is really remarkable
@EtienneLF I don't think it was ever a part of the soundtrack released. Someone was able to rip it from the movie and stuck it on youtube, forgot what it was called though.

Great film. Just one thing to some of these comments, they all have my respect. French, Spanish, English whoever they should all be respected and still thought of as brave men. One of my greatest grandfathers was at Trafalgar and the first man to catch Nelson when he was mortally wounded but do not just respect ENglish if you English. Defeat can be honorable and the 'enemy' then held their heads high. Heroes, all of them.
It is distressing to see that people are saying this battle had nothing to do with the end result... It had everything to do it with it! British naval dominance over France and Spain meant that French trade was gone. Britian could allow trade and fresh supplies arrive at newly taken ports. British ships could bombard coastal citys and allow reinforcments to be brought quickly and safely. France could not do this. So yes, it maybe didnt do much at the time, but it led to the Allies victory
@12345668587 yes spain had the best ships in the oceans in fact you had the most guns and shpping than anyone else in that time. but unfortunatly skill is far more important than equipment. and thats why britain ruled the waves..training, training and yet more training and im not sure about stealing designs as we never really did follow ur footsteps with ur gun platforms especially with that huge one that you made..with like 150 guns or something but then again i could be wrong
@12345668587 when did spain come in? i dunno considering it was a spanish and french fleet i think they did have some part to take :) and its easy for one person to say that one stole a design from another but if you have a link that you can message me personaly then id be happy to read it but until then..nope
@AdognamedOp yeah but there is no way it would be a hollywood movie, most americans don't know spain is in europe and instead they think is somewhere latin america
@folladordeprostis Yep, just shows how dumb our generation is and how screwed up our education system is. I mean, who really cares about the personal lives of Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian? Why are they so important?
@folladordeprostis The rest of the world wants to see all of America as uneducated, lazy slobs. This is an unfortunate stereotype.
I'm American. I know Spain is in the easternmost part of Europe, directly next to Portugal and France. I have many friends whom also know this. I don't know anybody, in fact, that can't place Spain on the map.
So take your disingenuous assertions and shove 'em. The Napoleonic Wars were some of the best, and I don't want assholish comments ruining the video!
@VollyTyrannis I read a lot of american comments talking about spain like it was a 3rd world contry ,also calling spaniards such as penelope cruz and javier bardem "mexicans", I did not say all americans believe that, but many do,especially rednecks
@12345668587 Well suck it faggot the British won. The British won almost every war they fought against the French. Even now their stronger than the French.
spanish People say that in 1588 the British only won because of the storm well the british drove them to stormy waters also in Trafalgar the British defeated the spanish and the french (who were the strongest navy in the world before the battle) Together and lost only 1 ship and captured 18
@jasincl sorry the battle in 1588 won the spanish but cant invaded...uk sed contraarmada 1589 and was destroyed by spaniards ...brits history books only tell victories : / and man you can read about " war of jenkin's ear " ... 3000 spaniards vs 186 ships !! ...nobody can say spanish are cowards ... in trafalgar the commander was villenueve ( suicide ) and best of spanish commander ( for ex churruca ) dead this day ...a little respect for a nation with GREAT HISTORY
@12345668587 thanks for your words...french fought very hard this day ...but villenueve was wrong : / the best of spain dead in trafalgar ...churruca,gravina ... : / and biguest ship of the time " santisima trinidad " was destroyed : /
trafalgar was a big propaganda blow, but in the military aspect it wasnt that important. In 1797 spanish defeated severely Admiral Nelson at Tenerife, were he also lost his eye.
@BLOCKEDbyPOM No, You need to understand the significance certain battles play, The timing, effect and consequence of losing specific battles are what destroy empires,
The battle of Trafalgar was one of those, The British victory crippled both french and Spain with the loss of so many ships, It would of been better if they had never committed to the battle, It might well of helped play a part in the following defeats they suffered from Britain, And in turn changed history
@1MagicAndMayhem1 naval wins or defeats didnt mean a lot, what destroyed the french was the desastrous invasion of rusia and what destroyed the spanish was the invasion of french.
Naval Victories Set The Stage For World Force Projection, As Well As Trade And Transport Around The World, It Had Everything To Do With The End Result
All Three Of These Reasons Contribute To The Success Of An Empire
Its Why The British Empire Was The Most Successful And Most Powerful For Its Part
@1MagicAndMayhem1 no, you are nuts, british empire came in first place because french and spanish were totally invaded and destroyed, so british had no opposition at all. Do you think it had an effect on spanish or french to lose 10 ships compared to being invaded? Spanish lost all possesions due to napoleon invasion, and french were forced to pay tons of gold to the british for losing the war. With its 2 major rivals knocked out, it was easy for the british to dominate world trade for 1 century
Where the devil are you getting your facts and statistics from? You have a lot to learn about history and as i already told you force projection, I think you have been listening to too many conspiracy theories
@1MagicAndMayhem1 whatever, you are right, losing 10 ships totally crushed the Spanish and French empires, Napoleon commited suicide on the news of the defeat, and the war ended with the British having total supremacy because they had 20 ships more.
@kaikovich Like i said, You need to say where your getting your statistics from, As their wrong, and also losing the ships that are used to defend, patrol and guard waters which in TURN effects what I've already told you,
@1MagicAndMayhem1 maybe britain needed ships because its a island, but france, or spain, dont need them so much, bc most important trade was between Europe, that is why Napoleon wanted to make an European trade embargo on Britain. Spanish empire began to look for independence once spain was invaded by france, not because of the battle (britain began to dominate trade with south america thanks to this independence). France most probably lost the war because of its invasions of russia and spain.
@kaikovich so, trafalgar battle was important for britain in the short term, as it prevented an invasion, but other factors later in the war were more beneficial for britain in the long term (after the war).
@jasincl Well not really, Britain had the strongest navy in the world before Trafalga, not the French or Spanish. Napoleon had always known that he couldn't beat the British on the sea. French sailors used to shit themselves when they knew Horatio Nelson was patrolling the seas. Trafalgar simply confirmed the fact the Britain had naval superiority, in a spectacular fashion.
@Kamfrenchie really ? i think the french not ... cowards ... example the biggest ship of the time " santisima trinidad " was beaten with five ships at a time, with first-admirals. the best of Spain died in that battle (Churruca gravina ..) ... with crews discouraged but gave the best ... while he fled in disarray ... much to blame but also had the windward Villenueve !!! fuck off villenueve ...retarded
@Kamfrenchie yes man sorry ... spain and france some time friends ... i think the biggest mistake of the French invasion of the peninsula was well thought out but they brought the revolution and progress to my country but the people rebelled and you know how the story ends,,,, anyway for us when we studied in classTRAFALGAR we are proud to fought this day with the frenchs a Greeting
@CapitanFiro That's in insult to the French ship Redoubtable, considered the one French ship that could deal a serious blow. As fate would have it, HMS Victory lay alongside this ship at engaged it, costing Admiral Nelson's life. Redoubtable would have boarded the Victory had HMS Temeraire not interviened.
@CapitanFiro Le Redoutable brave capitaine Lucas.
Though, one thing I will admit that still cracks me up, these ships can take so much punishment, yet the Titanic sank from just gazing an ice burg...
@ltflak Titanic had that ice'berg' cracking its low hull, with waters flooding in as result. It was same as if it was hit by a modern torpedo, which is completely different from exchanging gunfires above waterline.
And old wooden ships of the line were so well built, and in some aspects they were even stronger than modern alluminium ships...
These ships took thousands of cannonballs during battles that raged for several hours, even days, and still stayed afloat, fighting hard..
@ltflak Although, in game the damage model is crap. Shows the ribs of the ships. In reality the hulls of ships were very thick, and as most shots weren't even aimed at the water line (if you capture the ship you can add it to your fleet, save the money building it would cost AND get the government prize money).
@ltflak These ships arehit by cannonballs and they are shooting them not down underwater but above the decks because of no hole hitting the ship under water. If you were to know anything about the R.M.S. Titanic you would under stand that the wrought iron hull with its weak rivets just so the ship cost cheaper did not slightly bum into an iceberg the friction of a very powerful icber with strong ice in cold water rubbed agains the thin weak Titanic hull also this was underwater.
one thing I have to disagree, there isn't a single fuck poetic about naval battles. The Pirates of the Carribean indeed make it look heroic and poetic, but then those video's are far from realistic. The only diffrence between the most foul prison in the world and the HMS Victory is that when you blow a hole in the Victory, you're even more fucked cause there's nothing but open sea for miles around
@slayerfromabove No, I do think it's artistic cause frankly when cannons take 2 minutes to reload. it's not very exciting, but when Pirates condences the battle, it almost became metaphor. Poetic it is, but who ever said poetic meant nice things? The Charge of the Light Brigade didn't sound like no picnic. Anyway, those wooden hellholes decided the fate of Britian.
The Spaniards then lost his best ship "Santísima Trinidad"

This should have been an easy victory for the French/Spanish on paper.
What paper figures do not tell you is the quality of the men fighting.
The British Royal Navy at this time were superb and highly trained.
The gun crews could easily beat any adversary in shots per minute.
There was the added incentive of prize money as well to the British crews.

@VollyTyrannis I read a lot of american comments talking about spain like it was a 3rd world contry ,also calling spaniards such as penelope cruz and javier bardem "mexicans", I did not say all americans believe that, but many do,especially rednecks

spanish People say that in 1588 the British only won because of the storm well the british drove them to stormy waters also in Trafalgar the British defeated the spanish and the french (who were the strongest navy in the world before the battle) Together and lost only 1 ship and captured 18
jasincl 1 year ago 18
@jasincl sorry the battle in 1588 won the spanish but cant invaded...uk sed contraarmada 1589 and was destroyed by spaniards ...brits history books only tell victories : / and man you can read about " war of jenkin's ear " ... 3000 spaniards vs 186 ships !! ...nobody can say spanish are cowards ... in trafalgar the commander was villenueve ( suicide ) and best of spanish commander ( for ex churruca ) dead this day ...a little respect for a nation with GREAT HISTORY

greeting from Madrid

@CapitanFiro satissima trinidad was only destroyed because it was too heavy to move in the slight wind on the day. Huge ship got shot to pieces

trafalgar was a big propaganda blow, but in the military aspect it wasnt that important. In 1797 spanish defeated severely Admiral Nelson at Tenerife, were he also lost his eye.
BLOCKEDbyPOM 1 year ago
@BLOCKEDbyPOM No, You need to understand the significance certain battles play, The timing, effect and consequence of losing specific battles are what destroy empires,
The battle of Trafalgar was one of those, The British victory crippled both french and Spain with the loss of so many ships, It would of been better if they had never committed to the battle, It might well of helped play a part in the following defeats they suffered from Britain, And in turn changed history
1MagicAndMayhem1 1 year ago 3
@1MagicAndMayhem1 naval wins or defeats didnt mean a lot, what destroyed the french was the desastrous invasion of rusia and what destroyed the spanish was the invasion of french.

Naval Victories Set The Stage For World Force Projection, As Well As Trade And Transport Around The World, It Had Everything To Do With The End Result
All Three Of These Reasons Contribute To The Success Of An Empire
Its Why The British Empire Was The Most Successful And Most Powerful For Its Part
1MagicAndMayhem1 11 months ago
@1MagicAndMayhem1 no, you are nuts, british empire came in first place because french and spanish were totally invaded and destroyed, so british had no opposition at all. Do you think it had an effect on spanish or french to lose 10 ships compared to being invaded? Spanish lost all possesions due to napoleon invasion, and french were forced to pay tons of gold to the british for losing the war. With its 2 major rivals knocked out, it was easy for the british to dominate world trade for 1 century
kaikovich 11 months ago
@kaikovich Woa!
Where the devil are you getting your facts and statistics from? You have a lot to learn about history and as i already told you force projection, I think you have been listening to too many conspiracy theories
1MagicAndMayhem1 11 months ago
@1MagicAndMayhem1 whatever, you are right, losing 10 ships totally crushed the Spanish and French empires, Napoleon commited suicide on the news of the defeat, and the war ended with the British having total supremacy because they had 20 ships more.
kaikovich 11 months ago
@kaikovich Ahh, Petty sarcasm, The shining example of a shallow mind and defeat in both a debate and reality
Thanks for understanding
1MagicAndMayhem1 11 months ago
@kaikovich Like i said, You need to say where your getting your statistics from, As their wrong, and also losing the ships that are used to defend, patrol and guard waters which in TURN effects what I've already told you,
Any historian can tell you that,
Connect the dots
1MagicAndMayhem1 11 months ago
@1MagicAndMayhem1 maybe britain needed ships because its a island, but france, or spain, dont need them so much, bc most important trade was between Europe, that is why Napoleon wanted to make an European trade embargo on Britain. Spanish empire began to look for independence once spain was invaded by france, not because of the battle (britain began to dominate trade with south america thanks to this independence). France most probably lost the war because of its invasions of russia and spain.
kaikovich 11 months ago
@kaikovich so, trafalgar battle was important for britain in the short term, as it prevented an invasion, but other factors later in the war were more beneficial for britain in the long term (after the war).
kaikovich 11 months ago
@jasincl
We still had the best navy before the battle of Trafalgar.
mwillis1000 10 months ago
@jasincl the storm happened after the battle and the french and spanish crews werent as experienced as the brits there ships werent maintained either
zzirSnipzz 10 months ago
@jasincl Well not really, Britain had the strongest navy in the world before Trafalga, not the French or Spanish. Napoleon had always known that he couldn't beat the British on the sea. French sailors used to shit themselves when they knew Horatio Nelson was patrolling the seas. Trafalgar simply confirmed the fact the Britain had naval superiority, in a spectacular fashion.

@jasincl they didnt loose any ships....and they were out numberd

I wonder if the result would have been different if Surcouf had accapted to be admiral at the battle of Trafalgar.
He usually caputred ships outnumbered 5 to 1 and was the best admiral France ever had.

CapitanFiro 1 year ago

MrDeano324 1 year ago
@ltflak Titanic had that ice'berg' cracking its low hull, with waters flooding in as result. It was same as if it was hit by a modern torpedo, which is completely different from exchanging gunfires above waterline.
And old wooden ships of the line were so well built, and in some aspects they were even stronger than modern alluminium ships...
These ships took thousands of cannonballs during battles that raged for several hours, even days, and still stayed afloat, fighting hard..
Kalnaf 1 year ago
@ltflak the reason why is because they had spare wood onboard and the titanic was mostly made of iron and you it takes a lot to weld iron
TheBratzAttack 1 year ago
@ltflak Yeah you take 1 volley from a 1st rate, and nothing remains of your hull, yet you still are able to float somehow...
redslownight 1 year ago
@ltflak Although, in game the damage model is crap. Shows the ribs of the ships. In reality the hulls of ships were very thick, and as most shots weren't even aimed at the water line (if you capture the ship you can add it to your fleet, save the money building it would cost AND get the government prize money).
DuncanElliott1700 1 year ago

The only diffrence between the most foul prison in the world and the HMS Victory is that when you blow a hole in the Victory, you're even more fucked cause there's nothing but open sea for miles around
slayerfromabove 1 year ago
@slayerfromabove No, I do think it's artistic cause frankly when cannons take 2 minutes to reload. it's not very exciting, but when Pirates condences the battle, it almost became metaphor. Poetic it is, but who ever said poetic meant nice things? The Charge of the Light Brigade didn't sound like no picnic. Anyway, those wooden hellholes decided the fate of Britian.
