  • Inside this new love, die. Your way begins on the other side. Become the sky. Take an axe to the prison wall. Escape. Walk out like someone suddenly born into color. Do it now. You’re covered with thick cloud. Slide out the side.Die, and be quiet. Quietness is the surest sign that you’ve died. Your old life was a frantic running from silence. The speechless full moon Comes out now.
  • @HotelsMusic Thanks for watching and leaving such a lovely poem... I think I've heard it somewhere before... is it Coleman Barks or something he read maybe? Anyway, it's perfect.

    :o)

    Have a lovely day.

    Gary

  • a real masterpiece. and, look at the ëye"tilt of the robot, it really comes alive.

  • @funkfanzzify Thank you very much.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Now that I have a Full HD monitor I can really enjoy the greatness of your work. Are you going to make another one like that? I would really appreciate if you would then give me also a chance to work on the sound. I know that you haven't got a very good microphone but I would be glad to help you out with my Microtrack 24/96. If you still need any sounds for "Open The Door" I can also try to help you out with that.

    Cheers,

    Lukas :-)

  • @LukasVideosify The next thing I do at this quality will be Open the Door (if I ever get time) Thanks mate, but I'm good. I've got a pretty good set up now. I like doing every part of a project too so it's rare I work with anyone else. It does happen but not often. Have a great day.

  • @EnigmaticStudies Poor guy was resurrected in a lab three years later though and now he's back to winding clocks. Security have been keeping an eye on a suspicious butterfly that's been flying around the entrance hatch. They've marked him as a possible terrorist.

    :o)

    G

  • Very emotional. I liked this a lot, great work.

  • @KillzorPhilzor Cheers. I'm glad you like it. It was a lot of work. I really hoped the emotion would make it through. It often gets lost in the process unfortunately. Thanks for checking it out.

    :o)

  • Awesome video and music to go with it !!! John Leon

  • Another video of yours that can be found in my favorites.

    ;o)

    why didn't I favotite it, yet... (?)

  • I feel better now that I know there is only 1 dislike, but even that is way too much lol, why is it that the greatness in our existence is shoved aside, well that fight is out of reach at this point, but wow THE MUSIC, THE THEME, THE VISUALS, THIS IS AMAZING, THE LIGHTING, THE ANGLES, EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT, THE WAY IT STARTED AND ENDED, NOW I HAVE TO WATCH MORE OF YOUR VIDEOS BECAUSE YOU TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL!!!

  • @EricPinaIAmGod Oh I have other vids with far more than one dislike.

    :o)

Each to their own. As long as there are kind people like you who get it then I'm happy. Cheers for watching. Have a great weekend.

    :o)

    Gary

  • @smartbluecat Thank you for the kindness but you have far more patience then me, I would've been furious lol, of course I get likes and dislikes all the time, I guess people get aggravated when I send them my video, in hopes of reaching them, sometimes they care but mostly, well NO lol! At least you get it, from one artist to another!

  • what is intriguing (beyond the intricacies like the reflection of the robotterfly in the side of the clock) is the level of expression & emotion you displayed with the machine (& the music) - the awe, dismay, decision, disgust & resolution/escape; I was right there cheering while lifting itself by the 'bootstraps' as it were - life should go so well .. nicely done, bdf

  • @becksdollface Thanks so much. I'm glad all that came across. It was a massive project and it was easy to get lost in the details but the points you outline where the important marks I wanted to hit.

    :o)

    Cheers

    Gary

  • goddamn brilliant...

  • @CyberWallX Thanks very much.

    :o)

    Gary

  • What's that song ?

  • @StoreForRent I wrote it while jamming along with the animation and it became the score. Thanks for watching.

    :o)

    Gary

  • so pretty quiet touching . . .

  • @zeemensch Thank you very much.

    :o)

    Gary

  • All of your videos are excellent....this one was a bit AWESOME!! ~ Patty

  • @gulf4diving Thank you, Patty.

    :o)

This was the hardest thing I'd ever done and it was quite a learning curve. You can find some making of videos on Open the Door (my next big project) on my channel if you're interested. This took about 5-6 months, OTD will take years... better get back to it. Cheers again.

    :o)

  • I am so sad to not see the comment I left in the beginning right after the video was made. Maybe there was something wrong with it? If so, I am terribly sorry. If you don’t mind, I’ll try again. Maybe I offended you with my reaction. It must be difficult to have people, time and again, miss the obvious meaning you are trying to convey. We don’t mean to frustrate you, honestly:)

  • @BirdOfParadise777 Hey there! Maybe it's on the non-HD version I uploaded first?

I rarely delete comments and I'm sure I wouldn't have removed one of yours... mmm. As for the meaning, either people get it on the level it's intended or not either way I'm happy as long as they get something from it. There have been some out there interpretations I must say. lol. Thanks for stopping by again BOP. You are always welcome.

    :o)

    Gary

  • @smartbluecat Bless your heart Gary:) Thank you for putting my mind at ease</;0}

  • I want a "love" thumb! I frequent this work of art because I love it so very much! In 6 minutes (long hard work) you've shown the worst of my life and the very best. I was so enthralled the first time I watched it- tears were running down my face and I could hardly breathe- which I didn't realize until the last moment. I didn't want it to end! I knew it would have taken me volumes to express in words, what you have expressed in this video and I couldn't have done it as beautifully as you have:)

  • I saw- my life was like that- a rut. Then a person came into my life and instantly I began to question and take a good look at the "rut" I was in! I was happy enough:) But, I had no clue "this happy" existed! I was inspired to be “a better me”, so we could be “the best us!” It wasn't easy to change- 'twas just as much of a struggle and tearing away as the robot displayed- but worth every second with this awesome person that I love, who taught me how to fly:) Happy to ∞!

    BOP

  • @BirdOfParadise777 Thank you so much for the beyond awesome comment BOP - I just saw it! Damn YT!

    :o)

You're words mean a lot. Thanks for letting me know how this effected you... it makes the pain of creating it even more worthwhile.

    :o)

    G

  • I am really quite emotional over this.

  • @UrbanMyth2010 I was quite emotional making it.

    :o)

Cheers for watching and come by any time.

    :o)

    Gary

  • @smartbluecat Thank you! :-)

    G

  • That was a great video! Thanks to Pfonyt for the share.

  • Cheers for watching. Glad you liked it.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Super clip!!! The video is excellent, the music is fantastic, and the story is involving... I enjoyed every second!!!

  • @pfonyt thanks for sharing this.

    :o)

    Have a great week.

    Gary

  • @smartbluecat

    Hello Gary!

You are more than welcome, and it was a pleasure because your works are so amazing and stunning.

    Cheers, p

  • Thank you very much.

    :o)

    Cheers for watching.

    Gary

  • *Amazing* ~ this is so cool ~ love the music and visuals.♫♥

  • Excellent work. Yeah, I can imagine the work that went into this.

  • Thank you! It was a big un al-right

    :o)

    Thanks for watching.

    Gary.

  • Awesome !!!

  • Thanks!

    :o)

    G

  • marvelous!

  • Thank you!

    :o)

    G

  • brilliant! i watch the open dor, an i saw it's a hard to do that..i understand you..and soun effexts made it really better! what can i say else..AMAGAZIN!!! a lot of work to do that...i watched it 3 times in HD! and this is very good idea! you done it only by yourself? where do you get the music?

  • Cheers! Thank you very much! I did it all including the music. Once I had the animation down I sat watching it with my guitar and jammed out the bones of the score then embellished it one layer of music at a time. Thanks for watching.

    :o)

    Gary

  • i couldn't watch this video whitouth commenting it..becaus it is amagazin! it deservs comments! music by yoursellf too? what? realy? woow :)

  • I just don't get how you do all this by yourself!!!! You must do artistic press ups every morning. lol. This is a beautiful allegory, wonderfully directed. Such an undertaking, I was looking at the butterfly's wings and thinking "he painted those designs, he built that body, he made it fly, he lit the room, he built the room, he designed the robot, and made the clock!!!! I get tired just thinking about it. Hats off!!!!!

I know a bit about 3Dmax and looking at this is scary! Well done.

  • Ah! I wondered if you had experience in 3D from some of your previous comments. Thank you so much... it's nice to hear that someone really understands the amount of work involved AND the film itself.

    :o)

Many people don't understand how this is done and are cynical about how much of an "art" it is when you use a pc. A pc's just a intricate paintbrush, a creative tool, the art will always come from the artist. Thank you so much for the great comment.

    :o)

    Gary

  • yes this is a story video,,, the music crescendos unobtrusively, the audience must do some work, but, the reward is so much more...

    bravo

    douglas

  • Thank you very much. I'm very glad you liked it and that you put in the work. You're very kind.

    :o)

    Have a great week.

    Gary

  • Thank you very much! That means a great deal. I'm so glad you liked it. You can find a glips behind the scenes on the first Open the Door Vlog if you're at all interested. Take care and thanks again.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Cheers for coming back for more.

    :o)

    G

  • Absolutely Brilliant Gary, I just had to watch this again after seeing your vid on how you go about creating these stories. Much time and thought goes into these....not to mention talent and sensitivity. Thank you!!!

  • No... thank you for the wonderful comment.

    :o)

    Gary

  • 4 month only?! wow what a strong skills and ability....I impressed very much.

  • Thank you very much! Well it was four months of animating, scoring, sound design and rendering and about two months of set up before - building everything.

    :o)

    Cheers for stopping by.

    Gary

  • HD yay!! awesome vid what program do you use??? coz its great!!

  • Hey! Thank you very much! It was created in Maya and graded in After Effects.

    :o)

    Have a good week.

    Gary

  • Keep it up Gary. Your work is Great, and the HD Quality is just amazing!!!! Go on with your work ;)

  • Very poignant ..moving actually .. Loved it ... bravo to all xxx

  • Thank you very much!

    "bravo to all"?

    :o)

    Cheers for stopping by.

    Gary

  • Nice video dude, how long did it take you to make this nice HQ movie? I'm still a little shitting around with After Effects, so maybe you can upload a video where robots, give a tutorial of how to use after effects

  • lol! That sounds like a lot of work. Working nights and weekends this took about four months - mainly because I was rendering at cinema wide screen. This was created in Maya then composited in After Effects. You can see a bit of it's making in my Making Open the Door Vlog if you're interested.

    :o)

    Take care.

    Gary

  • Please..

    Please be my mentor!

What programs did you use btw?

  • Thanks very much for the wonderful compliment. Robotterfly was modelled, textured, animated and rendered in Maya. It was graded and composited in After effects. I'm self taught so it's nice to hear that you like what I'm up to. My next BIG project is gonna take years - if you're interested check out -Making Open the Door vlog1- on my channel. Thanks for the kind words. Have a great weekend.

    :o)

    Gary

  • @smartbluecat, Wow well it is very nice :)

I have never heard of Maya but I am currently teaching myself After Effects. Going to have to Google it now. Amazing work :)

  • Simply amazing! 5/5!

  • Cheers! Thanks for watching.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Really great, so inventive

  • Thank you very much!

    :o)

    Gary

  • Just Brilliant...it boggles the mind. thank you, what a great story 100******* Stars....!!!!!!!

  • Thank you so much, Sandi! Boggling is a hobby of mine.

    :o)

    Gary

  • a good time to revisit and start the year out right!

  • Well I hope it's a great one.

    :o)

Thanks for coming and back and all the best for 2010.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Wow! This is just superb! Super production and story! Sensational video making! Most enjoyed! Cheers!

  • Thank you, Ed. Cheers for watching.

    :o)

Have a very happy new year.

    Gary

  • Simply excellent

  • Thank you very much.

    :o)

    Thanks for watching.

    Gary

  • One of the best animations on YT! This was the first film I saw of yours, Gary, and it's VERY impressive work. Plus it's so touching....perfect! I'm glad Paul sent it to me to watch again!

  • Cheers B! It's crazy to think this time last year I'd just finished it. Yeah it's the toughest thing I've done... so far. Open the Door is the next level for me. Hopefully you'll like that too when it's done - in a year and a half! Cheers for watching again and thanks to Paul for sharing... you da man.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah.....what she said. :)))

  • :o)

  • Powerful message in there those of us that dont have freedom due to work and those who are free to live, brilliant the whole package

  • Thank you very much.

    :o)

    Glad you liked it.

    G

  • This reminded me of "be human" by Yoko Kanno, from the "Ghost in the Shell" related album.

  • The music? Yeah - that's cool. It was such a massive project to do all by myself that by the time I got to writing the music I didn't really write more than the hook before recording, I just jammed along with the visuals about five times and picked the one I liked best. Cheers for watching.

    :o)

    Gary

  • You know, I dig the music too, but I meant the whole atmosphere and overall theme of this piece. Wanting to be more alive, envious of the level of sentience of the winged creature. It's moving.

  • That's great! Thank you... that's the most important thing | was aiming for.

    :o)

    Cheers

    Gary

  • Thanks! This is the toughest thing I've done... so far. I'm working on something much bigger now called Open the Door - I've posted part one of a making of if you're interested. Re the music - I wrote the main theme (the butterfly theme) first then just jammed the rest, making it up as I went along, watching the finished animation. I never named it. Thank you so much for stopping by, and for the sub.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Thank you so much! Glad it found you. Cheers for writing such a lovely comment.

    :o)

    G

  • this is marvelous

  • Thank you very much!

    :o)

  • Nice idea, awesome execution ! VL

  • Thank you very much. Cheers for stopping by.

    :o)

  • That was gorgeous!!

  • Thank you! Glad you liked it. Thanks for dropping by. Come back any time.

    :o)

  • Thank you so much! It was a big one. Glad you liked it. Thanks for dropping by.

    :o)

  • Very cool work, Buddy you got skittles !!!

    Have fun

    Bert-

  • Thanks mate!

    :o)

  • Wow, I wouldn't even know how to begin to make something like this! I tip my hat to you, sir!! O.K., that's a lie..... I'm not wearing a hat. But if I were, I would tip it in your direction! Can't believe you had the perseverance to put 4 months in to this project. And I thought I putting 40 days into a video was too much time.:) Cheers!

  • Thank you sir! It was my Everest at the time. Unfortunately/fortunately I'm starting an even bigger climb now. I hope I reach the top before my laptop explodes!

    :o)

  • Excellent kinda Wall-e like but you wondered if the robotic xyz and r would hurt the butterfly but it showed some humanity ...perhaps it was programmed into it. 5 butterfly wings

  • Yeah, I was so scared when the first shots for Wall-e were released while halfway through making this. It turned out fine though, Unlike Wall-e, Robotterfly is metaphorical and quite blatantly an allegory - people seemed to dig that concept(phew). I was just glad my laptop hadn't caught fire during the rendering!!:o)

Thanks for checking it out. Appreciated.

    :o)

  • That was fantastic buddie and so real! Luv the message...let all roboters free and fly! : D You are a awesome Director! Thankz for sharing!!!

    -Manuel-

  • Cheers mate! Yeah this was tough! It is an old one, man. It has been a while! You've missed a few of my vids I reckon. lol

Thanks for stopping by. Big up the

    mansenX1978!!!

    :o)

  • wow,,,,, i am slow to warm up to the "art" of computer animation, because i primarily do drawings, paintings, sketches, and music, buttttt,,,, this is soooo well done, what a great way to tell your story, the music fits like a glove,,,, story telling at its best,,, what a lot of personal energy well spent,,,,, :-)

  • Hey thanks for the great comment. I'm glad you liked the music - it was the last thing I worked on in this project and it took a while to get the tone right. I started out drawing and painting too - but being a frustrated film maker without a crew learning animation was a way to combine everything I love in one place. Thanks for stopping by.

    :o)

  • This is an absolute gem. You've clearly put a huge amount of effort into this and it shows. It's incredible.

    5***** and then some. =)

  • Thank you so much! Glad you liked it.

    :o)

  • i hadnt counted on this being so emotional, but when the butterfly leaves and the machines go all sad,it real stirs the soul...but then when the machine breaks free from its station to fly away and be among the very thing it created,i was blown away..........so good!

  • Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Cheers for watching and leaving such a nice comment.

    :o)

  • I love the little bounce you give to objects. Something about that one detail makes me "believe" or suspend my disbelief.

    Loved this. Favorited it...

    Roy

  • Thanks so much Roy!

    Glad you liked it.

    :o)

    G

  • Sweet, beautiful, loved the soundtrack. Amazing! Speechless.

  • Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it.

Cheers for stopping by and leaving a nice comment.

    :o)

  • awesome ! :D

  • very nice

    M.V.B Films

  • Thank you! It was a very tough one!!!

    :o)

  • Wow....incredible!

  • Thank you very much!

    :o)

  • The concept is so amazing! I really impressed by what you did, not only the great movie but once again your concept to make this... You are a true artist Gary!

  • Thank you very much - It's nice to get a comment referring to the overall idea not just the visuals or music composition. Cheers for stopping by and for your kind words.

    :o)

  • You're welcome Gary.... I believe in the concept. Many great visual artworks outside there, but the idea behind the story is as important as the visual beauties. You show me you're not only a visual maker and that's how a true artist should be! Congratulation my friend...

  • Pixar! This guy needs a job fast! (Nice job man!)

  • Hook me up, man.

    :o)

  • :) :)

  • Glad you like it, man. Cheers for checking it out.

    :o)

  • This fantastic on so many levels. The design is fresh and emotive, the animation is great and full of character, the sound design is epic and the story is so beautiful! To know that just one man did ALL this blows my mind every time I watch it. Hats off to you sir. :)

  • Thank you so much. It was a big undertaking indeed. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm still not happy with the butterfly animation, but hey, you live and you learn.

    :o)

Thanks for dropping by and leaving such a nice comment.

  • Amazing, I love it, what software you using and what qualifications do you have?

  • Hey there. Thank you very much.

    :o)

I built and animated it all in Maya 8.5. I recorded and mixed the music with Adobe Audition. I sequenced the renders in Adobe After Effects. I have no qualifications in art or animation - I'm self taught so comments like yours mean a great deal.

    :o)

  • you are a genius may I ask what work you do, Next year I start my media course at college, I aim to go to university and get on a special effects course, nothing like this like in movie special effects, explosions green screen, this is amazing. I wish I was a tenth as talented as you. The emotion in this in unbelievable, I have a feeling this reflected your life at one point,, no need to make it personal though, anyway BRAVO this should have 705,000 views not 705, this destroys professional work

  • Thanks again! You're very kind. I'm trying to get into this professionally so at the moment I teach traditional art part time at an after school and do freelance graphic design and animation in the evenings and weekends. Not much money yet but my portfolio is slowly growing and that opens the doors to bigger and better work. Your observation is well made - it's very personal. Hopefully one day I'll be able to leave the clock winding and take flight.

    :o)

  • Well, there effort required for this is exception. Sorry to say this but I feel like it brings up a down side in your life, possibly shitty work placement, family, relationships, not doing what you enjoy feeling depressed about and then something came along (this obviously) creating new paths opportunities freeing your mind and soul, work with personal meaning is amazing. no need to thank me this is talent and a new life for you growing ever more your talent is amazing

  • Don't be sorry.

    :o)

Art for me is many things - expression is at its heart. The whole point of my personal work is sharing ideas and feelings both positive and negative - this is a bit of both. Robotterfly is very allegorical and while it's an expression of my personal feelings it's also a fable offering hope and encouragement to all. I think it 's quite blatant but you'd be surprised how many people think it's about a robot and a butterfly.

    :o)

    Cheers for looking deeper.

  • Yeah, Interpretive arts (Y)

I like things that come from the heart when people express there emotions and wow some people needs to get a brain if they think it's about a butterfly, this is truly amazing both in the work perspective and in the meaning of it. It's really good man, I'm going to clear out my subscription list but you are staying in. Also, I look into things a lot especially with music. I am a big metal fan, most people see that as screaming but the lyrics are so much deeper :)

  • I also love the rainbow near where the clocks come the meaning behind that OMG you are amazing. I love the interpretations you can get from this. so pessimistic yet optimism is shown throughout

  • Thanks man. Cheers for checking it out.

    :o)

  • This is awesome. I love the concept. Honestly I think the story has just as much to do with the piece as animation does. Your really good at setting up shots.

    Well done! =D

  • Thank you so much! Story is indeed king. The only reason I've been teaching myself digital art and animation is to tell stories. I love the whole process of syphoning an idea from your head and trying to make it tangible so you can share it.

    Cheers for the great comment.

    :o)

  • Great work, Love the emotion you put into the gestures of the robot. Cant wait to see what your next project looks like!

  • Thank you very much! It was a slog I can tell ya.

    :o)

The next BIG project's in the works - I'm already pulling my hair out.

    :o)

Take it easy and good luck with your work - it's looking great.

  • a story well told.....as for the maya work I cannot say how this rates except for me it seems to rock in your case. This is top stuff. The only thing that really sucks about your vid is the tiny 602 views since the 8th Feb. Thats so wrong.

  • Cheers man. Yeah it sucks.

    :o)

I first uploaded it in Dec but not in HD - that version has had a few more hits... I group them together in my head. As long as the few people that see it get something from it that's the main thing. Thanks for watching and leaving such a nice comment.

    :o)

  • Ok, I gotta know. Was anything in this video NOT created in a computer? I mean, that room with the robots looked pretty damn real.

This is great work, better than anyone has a right to expect on YouTube. Good job.

  • Hey. It was all done on my laptop from scratch.

    :o)

Cheers for checking it out and for leaving an excellent comment.

    :o)

  • All on your computer? No shit! Well, this certainly proves that someone with talent, a laptop, the right software, and an infinite amount of patience (dude...the time you must have spent just RENDERING) can do exceptional work. Of course, if it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

Now I wanna learn Mayaaaaaaaaaaa! Waaaah!

  • Cheers! Yeah it was about a month of solid rendering at nights and while I was at work. It was my Everest.

    :o)

I'm now working on something bigger.. my laptop will probably explode or I'll die of old age before it's done though. You should look into maya - I'd love to see what you'd do with it.

    :o)

  • Maybe after I've builit a nice render farm.

  • I was totally mesmerized by this excellent production. It is marvellous. Immediately thought - must share it with Randy - on looking through the comments I see he commented 3 months ago - I shall forthwith berate him for not sharing this with me sooner!

    Julia.x.

  • Hehe! Cheers. It was a toughy. The next one's gonna bee harder though. I don't know why I do it to myself sometimes.

    :o)

    Thanks for watching, Julia.

  • Awesome and intriguing video.

  • Thank you very much!

    :o)

  • Good job, that must have taken allot of effort to make.

  • Thank you! Yeah it was a bloody nightmare but I learnt a lot doing it. Cheers for checking it out man.

    :o)

  • I love this. I wish everyone on YouTube could see it.

In fact, it should win a Webby award or something, so -everybody- could see it.

  • Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.

    :o)

    Take care.

  • that was awesome!

    i loved the message!

  • Thank you so much! Very glad you liked it.

    :o)

  • i would like to repeat other peoples opinnion - very, very impressive.

  • Thank you very much! Glad you liked it.

    :o)

  • cool...
