some of this is the worst advice for writing an introduction paragraph. never open with a quote. you will be ripped to shreds.

@sidereally -->> Beware of absolutes in your writing. In my 25 years of experience as editor, teacher and writer, virtually any technique can be effective if it is done well. If an essay opens with an irrelevant, cliched, or dropped quote, yeah . . . you're in trouble.

@cptbaker -->>In writing it's usually best to base your decisions on what works best for your audience, whether your audience is a teacher, a corporate client, Facebook friends and so forth. Like our speech, our writing varies according to audience and purpose. You might also wish to go to Google and search on "introduction paragraph strategies" to find out more about using quotations in introductions. Good luck!

nena--an introduction should be the exact number of sentences required to accomplish its purpose: to set up the thesis statement. Try to look at model papers done by others. How long are their introductions?
