The best Ellington piece ever. If he'd ever finished the opera of which this song was to be a part, I think it would still be blowing minds to this very day.
Koko (1940) requires more than one listening. The bass is playd by the legendary Jimmie Blanton, the baritone sax by Harry Carney, the greatest bari player, the trombone solo by Tricky Sam Nanton, the man who could 'speak' through his 'bone, the piano by Duke, who laid down a solo - nearly 70 years ago - that was completely unheard of in 1940. But the most intriguing and exciting is the magical 'together' way the band plays the fantastic arrangement, which may have been intended as dance music.
This is one of the most fantastic pieces of music EVER written and, here, played. Sublime..pure genius... So good, so moving, such an attack that it DISTURBS some people...I know. I've seen 'em look when I blast it on my car CD player.
The only thing I can think of that's as good as this song is a great slice of pizza.
Oh, I see now.

Alain Pailler, a french writer, just finished a book only about this major song. I just finished it, that's a good one (if you can read french).
