You can get plenty of mercury from seafood if you want already.

I read a study that showed that fluorescent bulbs actually have a net energy loss, because of the complexity of the production process--and for some reason people are ignoring the ridiculous pollution they cause, with harsh chemicals and treated glass, instead of a semi-natural filament and regular, good 'ol melted sand.

I guess they dont work well in cold climates because what you gain in energy savings you lose in heat savings...your furnace has to work harder to keep the same temperature as they dont release any heat! Up in Canada, we have them, but they're not all that their cracked up to be!

what a disaster it would be if a factory that made those caught fire and all of the mercury those bulbs contain was thrown into the air and ground around the building? what a shame if a big box of those fell from a shelf at a store and they all shattered. should I really have to call poison control every time i break a lightbulb? especially with a baby and a dog that eat everything in the house?

How about also using more natural daylight. When I renovated my house I replaced my windows with Low-E vinyl and either made bigger openings or more openings for more windows. Most days I can just open a window for cool air as opposed to turning on the AC, good savings so far.

I know its not practical for everyone, but consider this option if you are a homeowner.
