  • definitely a very different sound than we are used to from bergonzi.

  • It's ironic that he went from baritone to tenor to sing in this, when recently Placido Domingo has dropped from tenor to baritone to sing the title role.

    Grandissimo.

  • Wow, this is an amazing, especially if he really was 21. He has a more baritonal tone to his voice here, but he doesn't sound like someone who's "still learning the process" (?) He's also incredibly intense here.

  • Listen to his live Met performance with Milanov and hear how this was the only tenor to get the role right. Tucker etc were good but Bergonzi's was something else. Yes in 1951 he was still learning about his change of voice but enough is there to let us know what was coming in the following years.

  • Bergonzi provided Callas-like intensity.

  • Is this really from 1951 when Carlo Bergonzi was 27. I believe that he had "upped" from Baritone to Tenor. I am no expert, maybe somebody can tell me.BUT to my untrained ear,he is still learning the process?

    Grazie. Walter.
