Hey Guy's, juss wanna say I've always wanted to become a jockey n I start racing n March! I'm only 16! But trust me if you have a passion for the horses and racing, stick with it. You can do it! Have faith nd don't let anyone tell u other wise but be prepared to get hurt. Hey its part of the sport. Reply if any questions.
<3 I love riding, but dont do it bcuz my parents dont give 2 shits about horses, they think its a waste. Christmas just past, I said all I wanted was $100, bcuz i wanted to start saving &later next year start riding. But nope, my mom said no cash and since I said i want nothing, she just got me a iron and some makeup. I hope me getting barely nothing for xmas, prooves my love for riding isnt a phase. I gave up being able to get alot of things, to proove a point. Hope it was the right decision/
@ZoeyBarrelLove perhaps. How tall are you? I know height doesn't matter but it's not good if you're tall and weigh 70 pounds and are a stick. Do you plan on going to any jockey schools?
@lilcowgirl1996 nope, your height is actually pretty average among jockeys as they can range from 4'10-5'6. It's all about weight. Apprentice jockeys weight from about 102-107 pounds because of the 10 pound weight allowance they receive.
Gahhh I would so love to be a jockey, too heavy though. I'm not fat, just.. tall. TOo tall. The closest I can come to it is galloping through the fields at my stable.
Animal planet needs to bring this show back on! At first i thought it was dumb but now thats its gone I started to wanna be a jockey and i must see it e.o Come on AP! @eyelovemyhorses I envy you SO much words cant describe it! XD cant wait to start getting experience with a galloping horse...
@voodoobaby405 HEY! yes, we jockeys do have a choice, but we do it out of what we love. the horses love it just as much, if not MORE then we do. They're in this buisness because of their big hearts for the sport, we're in this because we do what we love: Horse racing. if youve got a problem with all this, than thats YOUR fault. QUIT TALKIN TRASH ABOUT THE STUFF US JOCKEY'S LOVE AND LIVE FOR!
i understand that horse racing means the world to certain people but animal planet plays it off like its a bad ass sport that everyone looks up to but i live in nj where supposedly there is a famous track where pros come from all over but i never hear any conversations on the street or anywhere about this sport. im not dissing the sport i just think the way animal planet markets it is really stupid
@DCOME13 They play it up to the world in which it takes place, the niche of people who love Horse Racing. That might only be 1 out of every 1,000 people on that street, but that's who the show is for. The people who watch Glee, and American Idol, and have never been a race in their life aren't going to watch this. The people in the business, the fans, and the bettors are.. and that's who look up to these athletes going through hell for their sport.
@DCOME13 if your not in the industry of horse racing of course your not going to here people talking about it. most people dont know even half of what goes down at the race track. Animal Planet is just trying to rais awarness for it which is a good thing if your interested in doing it as your profession.

@kabir237 how old are you? it depends on how much strength you have and if you can continue to be the same as when you were young. Some jockeys retire at the mid forties and some still ride in their 50's. it depends.
@MicheVonWitch Yeah that is if you make money. You lose more than you make unless you get a good combination of horse and rider. Your 50 times is an over exaggeration.
stop this jump jocket vs jockeys so on, they are the same, the risk are the same and it isnt anything called jump jockeys and ordinary jockeys. both can start on a race with jumping. it's all up to theirselves what they want.
All riders regardless if it is dressage, jumping or racing, it is amazing precision to ride a horse on that kind of level AND dangerous
If flat jockey's are brave, then what about jump jockeys?? I think the average jump jockey falls 1 time in 10 and gets paid significantly less, with less glamour and press coverage for doing a more dangerous job.
Flat horses run much faster at a young age in a group....in comparison to more mature jump horses running slower over practiced fences...Don't kid me that you don't know the significant difference!!!...

Dateline found out about this story from watching the CHAPPYSHOWCASE video HILARIOUS JOCKEY RIDE. One of the most amazing events in horse racing history.MATT THOMAS CHAPMAN OF CHAPPY SHOWCASE, CHAPMAN DIGITAL MOTION PICTURES AND SOON TO COME GURILLA TV
CONGRATULATIONS ON GIVING THE NEW JOCKEYS SHOW ON ANIMAL PLANET THEIR FIRST IDEAS.
i heard they have the most talented athletic abilities in general compare to any other athletes in the world when they are converted to the same height and weight
Talk about copying someone else's ideas!!! Animal Planet contacted Matt Chapman to use his ideas for the "Jockeys Show". Matt filmed a video several years before on the dangers of raceriding. Matt felt like he should be compensated for his work, Animal Planet didn't and made their own show. From the interviews of the jockeys mentioning their broken bones to the last segment of the show where a jockey is lying motionless on the turf, Animal Planet stole Matt Chapman's ideas.
I guess that is the way it goes. At least we know that I helped raise awareness enough that even animal planet noticed. Moreover, they went so far to basically copy my message and spearhead the creation of one of the best reality shows on tv right now.
Check out my documentary on the dangers of horse racing on my profile. My dad was a jockey for 20 years in Northern California so it has a personal touch.
t's funny. This video segment from Jockeys copies my documentary on youtube. of the same subject. It's called Horse Race Accident Mini-doc. I guess i'm flattered. I just wish i was producing this show on animal planet.
I ride a ex-racehorse. He was winning everything up till he got a bag injury coming outa the starting gate. Hes 17.1 and doing great. Life after racing.
Most people who give out about jockey's or slag them off have never even sat on a horse let alone a racehorse! or have ever been in a racing yard to see how well cared for and looked after the horses are!! how hard the jockeys and stable lads and lasses work!! so why would ya comment what you don't know about ?????
I agree, it is all about money. What about the horses, no one cares do they, just as long as you get your money and when the horse does not earn or stops earning it goes to the slaughter house, or dies trying.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Like I said there is nothing in racing for horses. They are run at speeds that are not normal at that distance.
It is all about money, for the jockey, the owner, the trainer. Money!!
That is the only thing that drives these people to race the horses. To create better horses so that they can get more money through racing or breeding. There is nothing in this for the horse!
That's what the horses are bred for. Not all in horse racing are in it for money.
For example Roy, and Gretchen Jackson. They could have easily put Barbaro down and collected the insurance money. But they didn't. He wouldn't have been useful at stud either.
Actually that in very untrue. Jockeys do need the money but if you wanted to have a remark about this subject you should have paid more attention. If you saw the Kentucky Derby when Eight Bells had that horrific fall the jockey was sobbing, so were the owners. Some stupid people in the racing world are money hungry but you have to give credit to the people who honestly care about their racing horses.
Well jumping horses is pretty much the same thing, they get injured too, and I have been to a race farm that is where I bought my horse and it was great, the took very well care of ALL the horses.
They do not go to the slaughterhouse. They go to stud and sometimes kid's summer camps. Yes, they do. There were two former racehorses at my summer camp.
although some are kept as breeding prospects and the lucky ones get loving homes a very large percentage go to slaughter. not many people want high strung horses that will have to be re-trained. its a sad but true fact of life.
Wormhog, they go to slaughter houses outside the usa, they r taken over the border to Canada or Mexico, the one who transport them and buy them are called "the Meatman" sad but true, learn what u r talking about ....sigh....how can u be part of a solution if u don't even know what the problem is??????????????
@eyelovemyhorses I have a lot of respect and appreciation of those in the racing profession. I appreciate racing as a sport, I just don't like the gambling aspect of it. There's definately something not right about a guy who can't afford to buy food for his kids because he blew $1,000 on a race, you know?
did the show get caceled?! ive stopped watching animal planet cause this waz the only show ive been watching ever sence wild rescue stopped coming on years ago =/
I have a quarter horse that loved to run she would be so happy that she used to hop into the trailer to go to the fair and race she would get off the trailer and started walking like she owned the place she loved to run but now she's retired but she still gallops a bit with the other horses
i stopped watching animal planet when i saw this series. As if glorifying the injuries and deaths of racehorses is what we need.
Disgusting
I dont feel sorry for the jockeys, any more than a racecar driver, but the horse, they are the ones who have no choice in life or death, or run ot not to run
These horses ar being trained to run... Often way to early, so the horse's bones can not fully develop, what causes more chances for broken bones. Remember Eight Belles' accident, back in May '08? When Eight Belles crossed the finish line, her both ankles shattered, because a horse isn't build to run as fast as that. These kind of accidents happen all the time, often before the horse can actually race some big races. They run so fast because people train them to do that. Don't deny it.
i race qaurter horses in the northwest we had a horse that when we retired him we used him to poney the third race that he ponied he walked into the gait so we ran him another year that year he had 9 starts 3 wins 4seconds 1third 1trackrecord we keep him to ride as apleasure horse but when you tell him to go hes gos
Screw the jockey, he's there because he's PAID to be there. So if he doesn't want there-he doesn't come there. My ONLY concern is for the horse, who does'nt have a choice in the matter.
most jockeys are at the racetrack BEFORE the stablehands or anybody else because they want to give their mount a nice pet or a carrot because they CARE about the horses that they ride, read My Guy Barbaro and youll get the picture :)
yeah so is dressage, cross country, steeple chase, and show jumping.and also including other human sports like volleyball, football. Everybody animal or human will get hurt but will you people understand that these horses were bred to RUN!They love it,if you just cooped them up in a paddock or stall all day they would get bored and agitated.
some of those horses LOVE to run, its just that some owners might not be doing so well at the tracks so they give their horses drugs such as steroids and push them too hard
I know that owners don't give a shit about the horse at all and they only care about winning but you are right that Some of them do love to run but the thing i don't like is that horses die during the race sometimes. Sorry but i don't agree with racing.
Yes thats true I agree but horses die in every sport like cross country or showjumping or western events there is nothing is 100% safe with them. Accidents happen
Have you never ridden a TB ex-racer before? These horses were bred for this, they love it. My TB ex-racer loves to gallop. When I shorten the reins, he automatically wants to go. I can't hold him back sometimes. He wouldn't anticipate me if he didn't want to run. That's all these high class atheletes think about . My horse can feel my que when I give him the slack, then he shoots off. He loves running w/ a rider. You have obviously never been on a TB ex-racer if you think they don't enjoy this.
YEA i rode an x-racer before! all she wanted to do waz go! she dident even wait for me to ask her to pick up speed she did but she dident wanna stop going once she waz going!
they WANT to run, did you see that horse that fell in the beginning around the 1st turn? What did he do after he fell? He got back up and RAN WITHOUT THE JOCKEY
if you knew anything you would kow that they LOVE running! if they dident wanna run they wouldent! its a 1200 pound hose and a 115 pound jockey you can see who would win. so shut up and research the subject BEFORE you go spreding rumors.
The horse is being held back the whole time until the final stretch, then they are let loose. The whip is encouragement & tells the horse to run faster. If you notice, they don't hit the horses the entire race, they start using it if they need it once they get to the final stretch, but they don't hit them through the whole race. It's just like when I ride hunterjumper. I use the crop when the horse is misbehainvg or I want it to move faster. No, I don't hit as hard, but it reinforces the horse.
it give them more motive! stupid some horses the jockey doesnt even use the whip its a signel to go faster! cause needing with your hands itent enuff sometimes! some horses dont even notice it!
life is quick ... racing is tough... and yet society pays AROD more than Jockeys....not from my wallet.... I know the game and Arod is a loser...this happened once befor when I came to your door...NO REPLY....
It's true, really. When I worked on the backstretch at Santa Anita, a horse with fluid in his knee got it taken care of immediately, rested up, and loved. The first day I started working, a groom got kicked inbetween the eyes and came back to work the next day with only a quick visit to the clinic and a bandaid. Grooms get little pay and work long hours. Most of them do it for the love of the horse, so for the most part, these animals are often treated with love and adoration.
All this argueing is ridiculous.... you have an opinion, fine. Sate it ONCE & leave for goodness sake. Horse racing is different in all countries, but in the USA theres alot of catching up to do. Drugs need to be banned, simple as that. But truth is the horses are treated like royalty & genuinely love to run. Not all horses are slaughtered, & certainly not here in the UK. European racing is the furthest thing from cruelty, people need to understand that. I wont be commenting here again.
Hit the nail right on the head! (although I think there is one slaughter house in Britain, sadly ) But I wish the US would train their horses like they do in Europe. Maybe it'll happen one day... Noneltheless, I love horse racing, and the (majority) of horses are treated like royalty. :)
thank you, its nice to finally find someone who knows what they are talking about & speaks politely to others =) As far as I'm aware there should be no slaughter houses, its illegal to slaughter horses I believe. Mind you its 4am, so I wont be thinking entirely clearly. Again, thank you.
lol, a late night or early morning?! I thought there was one abbatoir for horses there... Taunton keeps popping to mind, but im not sure if it was there. Somewhere like that in a town where there was a race course... I'd still swap US racing for British racing anyday though!!! LOL just my opinion. :)
lol kinda both XD I have the most terrible sleeping pattern, I stay up all night & early morning hours & generally sleep all day haha. No idea how I managed to get into such an awful routine. But when I'm working I get up at 5am, I'm training towards being a jockey, but first you need to learn to be a groom/work rider. I recently left a yard in Perth, I've a few videos of the horses on my account ^^
Cool! Are you or have you been to any racing school, BRS or Northern racing college? I went to BRS, was great fun but very strict work routines. Best move I made though! They put you in a job at a racing yard.
yeah I went on the 9 week course at the BRS, but had to leave halfway through. I needed a bit more experience cause I'd never been in a stable before & I was taking a bit too long to pick things up. But I've got the experience now & should be going back for the full 9 weeks in the summer =D Who you working for?
I worked for Mary Reveley after the BRS, but since I have left and I now live in florida! I still care for horses and such, and exersize ride when I can. :) I had never been in a barn before either. Thats why I found it tough. Good for you for going back... many wouldnt bother. Good luck with it!
i have seen plenty of them come off the track because they just couldn't do it. ponytales2001, these horses don't love to run or race. they are drugged to the point where they no nothing other than to run or race. if you can see a horse who hasn't made it past barrier trials they are a completely different animal. it is very hard to find a horse that has a passion to run. these breeds arn't all about running. people breed these horses because they are versitile - dressage, jumping and xcountry.

They ALSO go to the slaughterhouses, especially the gelded ones.

Rumors!! That used to be true but not anymore. I'm totally against slaughter, but that's not what happens to ex-racers.

Most people who give out about jockey's or slag them off have never even sat on a horse let alone a racehorse! or have ever been in a racing yard to see how well cared for and looked after the horses are!! how hard the jockeys and stable lads and lasses work!! so why would ya comment what you don't know about ?????
lauranewell 2 years ago 4
do ya u just sit on a horse yea?!
i am a work rider.. and we dont just sit on horses, look at our bodies just muscels .. tell me somethin else pls
zelaviv 2 years ago
I agree, it is all about money. What about the horses, no one cares do they, just as long as you get your money and when the horse does not earn or stops earning it goes to the slaughter house, or dies trying.
I say we should put an end to horse racing!!!

I agree. It may be an american tradition but its horrible.

Like I said there is nothing in racing for horses. They are run at speeds that are not normal at that distance.
It is all about money, for the jockey, the owner, the trainer. Money!!
That is the only thing that drives these people to race the horses. To create better horses so that they can get more money through racing or breeding. There is nothing in this for the horse!
katt1woman 2 years ago
That's what the horses are bred for. Not all in horse racing are in it for money.
For example Roy, and Gretchen Jackson. They could have easily put Barbaro down and collected the insurance money. But they didn't. He wouldn't have been useful at stud either.
spam1237 2 years ago 3
Also you really never get the money back that you put into the horses...
spam1237 2 years ago
Actually that in very untrue. Jockeys do need the money but if you wanted to have a remark about this subject you should have paid more attention. If you saw the Kentucky Derby when Eight Bells had that horrific fall the jockey was sobbing, so were the owners. Some stupid people in the racing world are money hungry but you have to give credit to the people who honestly care about their racing horses.
JockeyEgo 2 years ago 2
Well jumping horses is pretty much the same thing, they get injured too, and I have been to a race farm that is where I bought my horse and it was great, the took very well care of ALL the horses.
HeyAtlas 2 years ago
They do not go to the slaughterhouse. They go to stud and sometimes kid's summer camps. Yes, they do. There were two former racehorses at my summer camp.
wormhog 2 years ago 2
they also go to riding stables, i rode an ex racehorse at my stables, Mr. Mouse he was awesome
XxKaiaDxX 2 years ago
although some are kept as breeding prospects and the lucky ones get loving homes a very large percentage go to slaughter. not many people want high strung horses that will have to be re-trained. its a sad but true fact of life.
MittanyGirl 2 years ago
Wormhog, they go to slaughter houses outside the usa, they r taken over the border to Canada or Mexico, the one who transport them and buy them are called "the Meatman" sad but true, learn what u r talking about ....sigh....how can u be part of a solution if u don't even know what the problem is??????????????

@eyelovemyhorses I have a lot of respect and appreciation of those in the racing profession. I appreciate racing as a sport, I just don't like the gambling aspect of it. I have a quarter horse that loved to run she would be so happy that she used to hop into the trailer to go to the fair and race she would get off the trailer and started walking like she owned the place she loved to run but now she's retired but she still gallops a bit with the other horses
supertoyhowto 2 years ago
I agree the horses are bred to run they run in herds and that's wat there doing in a race
supertoyhowto 2 years ago 3
i stopped watching animal planet when i saw this series. As if glorifying the injuries and deaths of racehorses is what we need.
Disgusting
I dont feel sorry for the jockeys, any more than a racecar driver, but the horse, they are the ones who have no choice in life or death, or run ot not to run
gryphonkeen 2 years ago
if they didnt want to run, THEY WOULDN'T its a 1200 lb. Thoroughbred made of pure muscle versus a 112 lb jockey, YOU do the math!
futurejockey8 2 years ago 2
These horses ar being trained to run... Often way to early, so the horse's bones can not fully develop, what causes more chances for broken bones. Remember Eight Belles' accident, back in May '08? When Eight Belles crossed the finish line, her both ankles shattered, because a horse isn't build to run as fast as that. These kind of accidents happen all the time, often before the horse can actually race some big races. They run so fast because people train them to do that. Don't deny it.
Dylan3293 2 years ago
sorry, but the jockeys cant weigh more than 109 pounds :)

where do you live? (this is a serious question) i live in SoCal and the lightest jockey ive seen is about 108, and the heaviest 124

Earthamaster 2 years ago
Screw the jockey, he's there because he's PAID to be there. So if he doesn't want there-he doesn't come there. My ONLY concern is for the horse, who does'nt have a choice in the matter.
gotch09 2 years ago 2
most jockeys are at the racetrack BEFORE the stablehands or anybody else because they want to give their mount a nice pet or a carrot because they CARE about the horses that they ride, read My Guy Barbaro and youll get the picture :)

yeah so is dressage, cross country, steeple chase, and show jumping.and also including other human sports like volleyball, football. Everybody animal or human will get hurt but will you people understand that these horses were bred to RUN!They love it,if you just cooped them up in a paddock or stall all day they would get bored and agitated.

some of those horses LOVE to run, its just that some owners might not be doing so well at the tracks so they give their horses drugs such as steroids and push them too hard
futurejockey8 2 years ago
I know that owners don't give a shit about the horse at all and they only care about winning but you are right that Some of them do love to run but the thing i don't like is that horses die during the race sometimes. Sorry but i don't agree with racing.
charlottee9412 2 years ago
Yes thats true I agree but horses die in every sport like cross country or showjumping or western events there is nothing is 100% safe with them. Accidents happen
cOwGiRlToUgH1 2 years ago 2
Like Ruffian. She loved to run :D But I agree The owners do push them too hard.
BreyerLottie 2 years ago
Have you never ridden a TB ex-racer before? These horses were bred for this, they love it. My TB ex-racer loves to gallop. When I shorten the reins, he automatically wants to go. I can't hold him back sometimes. He wouldn't anticipate me if he didn't want to run. That's all these high class atheletes think about . My horse can feel my que when I give him the slack, then he shoots off. He loves running w/ a rider. You have obviously never been on a TB ex-racer if you think they don't enjoy this.
bns54913 2 years ago 2
YEA i rode an x-racer before! all she wanted to do waz go! she dident even wait for me to ask her to pick up speed she did but she dident wanna stop going once she waz going!
HorsecrazyZukoFan 2 years ago
if they want to go that fast all the time then why would you whip them like that?
charlottee9412 2 years ago
they WANT to run, did you see that horse that fell in the beginning around the 1st turn? What did he do after he fell? He got back up and RAN WITHOUT THE JOCKEY
futurejockey8 2 years ago
if you knew anything you would kow that they LOVE running! if they dident wanna run they wouldent! its a 1200 pound hose and a 115 pound jockey you can see who would win. so shut up and research the subject BEFORE you go spreding rumors.
HorsecrazyZukoFan 2 years ago 3
why whip them to death then? If they love it soooo much and if they go like that and don't challenge the jockey then why would you whip them?
charlottee9412 2 years ago
The horse is being held back the whole time until the final stretch, then they are let loose. The whip is encouragement & tells the horse to run faster. If you notice, they don't hit the horses the entire race, they start using it if they need it once they get to the final stretch, but they don't hit them through the whole race. It's just like when I ride hunterjumper. I use the crop when the horse is misbehainvg or I want it to move faster. No, I don't hit as hard, but it reinforces the horse.
bns54913 2 years ago 4
ahh that would explain it. it still looks pretty violent when they hit them though.
charlottee9412 2 years ago
it give them more motive! stupid some horses the jockey doesnt even use the whip its a signel to go faster! cause needing with your hands itent enuff sometimes! some horses dont even notice it!
HorsecrazyZukoFan 2 years ago 3
a whip to them is like a flick of a finger on yourself

Racing isn't abuse.
Horse racing isn't the only sport that have had horses die in or get bad injuries.
My grandma races horses, and he is in great health.
Cross country, steeple chase, have given fatal injuries to horses befor.

DerangedAlibi 2 years ago 4
All this argueing is ridiculous.... you have an opinion, fine. Sate it ONCE & leave for goodness sake. Horse racing is different in all countries, but in the USA theres alot of catching up to do. Drugs need to be banned, simple as that. But truth is the horses are treated like royalty & genuinely love to run. Not all horses are slaughtered, & certainly not here in the UK. European racing is the furthest thing from cruelty, people need to understand that. I wont be commenting here again.
PlioCameBack 2 years ago
Hit the nail right on the head! (although I think there is one slaughter house in Britain, sadly ) But I wish the US would train their horses like they do in Europe. Maybe it'll happen one day... Noneltheless, I love horse racing, and the (majority) of horses are treated like royalty. :)
Ringobjingo 2 years ago
thank you, its nice to finally find someone who knows what they are talking about & speaks politely to others =) As far as I'm aware there should be no slaughter houses, its illegal to slaughter horses I believe. Mind you its 4am, so I wont be thinking entirely clearly. Again, thank you.
PlioCameBack 2 years ago
lol, a late night or early morning?! I thought there was one abbatoir for horses there... Taunton keeps popping to mind, but im not sure if it was there. Somewhere like that in a town where there was a race course... I'd still swap US racing for British racing anyday though!!! LOL just my opinion. :)
Ringobjingo 2 years ago
lol kinda both XD I have the most terrible sleeping pattern, I stay up all night & early morning hours & generally sleep all day haha. No idea how I managed to get into such an awful routine. But when I'm working I get up at 5am, I'm training towards being a jockey, but first you need to learn to be a groom/work rider. I recently left a yard in Perth, I've a few videos of the horses on my account ^^
PlioCameBack 2 years ago
Cool! Are you or have you been to any racing school, BRS or Northern racing college? I went to BRS, was great fun but very strict work routines. Best move I made though! They put you in a job at a racing yard.
Ringobjingo 2 years ago
yeah I went on the 9 week course at the BRS, but had to leave halfway through. I needed a bit more experience cause I'd never been in a stable before & I was taking a bit too long to pick things up. But I've got the experience now & should be going back for the full 9 weeks in the summer =D Who you working for?
PlioCameBack 2 years ago
I worked for Mary Reveley after the BRS, but since I have left and I now live in florida! I still care for horses and such, and exersize ride when I can. :) I had never been in a barn before either. Thats why I found it tough. Good for you for going back... many wouldnt bother. Good luck with it!
Ringobjingo 2 years ago
i have seen plenty of them come off the track because they just couldn't do it. ponytales2001, these horses don't love to run or race. they are drugged to the point where they no nothing other than to run or race. if you can see a horse who hasn't made it past barrier trials they are a completely different animal. it is very hard to find a horse that has a passion to run. these breeds arn't all about running. people breed these horses because they are versitile - dressage, jumping and xcountry.
