Wow....haven't thought about AA in a long time. Went thru back in 1992 @ Ft Hood.. It was 14days then. Started out with nearly 300 guys and only about 120 of us passed . At the time.... I could bust out 100+ push-ups in 2 min, 80+ sit-ups and ran the 2 mile in 10:48. Even in that good of shape...ZERO Day about killed me. I can remember the cadre counting off 300 jumping jacks...(4 count to boot) 1-2-3-ONE, 1-2-3-TWO, 1-2-3-THREE....agony. BLOOD WINGS!
@mikeyadigone i had my first diagnostic pt test on friday and got a 230 i think? idk i wanted to do better. i know i passed everything fine but i wanna get a 300 by the test in april. i did better than most of the other MS1's in my class, plus im going to optional tues and thurs pt sessions, so my name will stand out when selection for the slots starts next year.
@mattaguitar5 That's good, as long as you're standing out in your MS1 class. I'm sure your ROTC program works the same way mine does but ours chooses cadets for air assault, airborne etc. from the OML (order of merit list). Usually the top 2-3 cadets get offered to go to spefic training. The most important thing is to keep your GPA up preferrably around 3.5 or above and strive for that 300!
I dunno man! I have bad thoughts of the tail rotor grabbing one of those lines and wrapping it and the guy on the end of it up like winding up a yo yo!! Whatta ya do then? ha!
Gee guys! We learned how to tie a diaper harness out of a length of rope and clip on with a carabiner (D-ring). Braking was by hand around the back. First time I forgot about the stretch factor and slammed into the ground. Of course we had full rucks, ammo & weapon. Got it right the second time. Deployed to A Shau several times. But that was back in '68 & '69. Training was at LZ Sally. Old school rules! Drive On! Geronimo!!!!
@davidcrow1982 i believe they are rappelling, i think with the fast rope your not harnessed in at all. im going to the school next month and cant wait
mos and duty station (within reason) doesn't dictate qualification limitations.....campbell has a AAS school but it's an infantry unit, same as drum (where i was) as far as schools it depends on openings thats the basics of it....
@phlyegles43 it is its own school at the Sabalauski Air Assault School at Ft. Campbell, KY- though they do have classes elsewhere (such as Camp Smith NY where most WP Cadets get their wings)
Went through in '98, first time go on everything, but still a VERY challenging course! As for bsugden83, have you been through either of the courses, or are you merely talking out of your ass?
The Basic Airborne Course is not difficult at all. Air Assault is much more challenging both physically and mentally. That said, pathfindercrasher hit the nail on the head. You will understand Airborne much better if you serve in an airborne unit.
Now if you want to talk about mentally challenging let talk about Pathfinder School.

how can anyone say that either of those schools are hard? they are completely ridiculous and easy. if you fail either, well, i dont really know what to tell you. you suck
I've done both and am currently at Ft Bragg. In comparing the schools, I gotta say Air Assault felt more difficult and more rewarding because ur constantly doing physical stuff and learning a whole bunch of shit. The only difficult thing about AirBorne School was getting use to the slower pace Airborne shuffle, running in boots and tolerating the long-ass wait to jump cause there's too many personnel. HOWEVER you'll understand why and appreciate Airborne most when u get to your Airborne Unit :)
No, u got people who are made for it. and who not. and it is reallyy hard... beside the SF. is this too very very hard.!!! thats why they recruit ppl from airborne for the sf.
@killerbees177 At Airborne School you can pass if the laws of Gravity Apply to you. At Air Assault School you can pass if you can climb a Rope and have half a brain + stem. So I'd say Air Assault, but on the other hand if you get stuck in the Sky at Airborne School a lot of other options will probably be available to you!
I went thru air assault training back in 1996 and the obstable course was where it is now, however the school was further to the south at the time and was much smaller than the new school. I trained with my company for almost a year before I finally made it thru the school which was good due to the coin drops that everybody would do causing non air assault soldiers to do 10 pushups per coin. Anyway great video and it brought back some good memories. Former soldier 1994-2002
Im headed to campbell five days from now to obviously rappel out of choppers... the bitch of it is Im a complete bitch when it comes to hights god dammit lmao
no, you wont be rappelling out of any choppers this quarter in campbell (they have a lack of air support)....im in the class that is graduating on thurs, we are starting on the rappel phase this monday (just on the wall) but make sure you can climb a rope before you become a day zero drop, good luck
lol same here bro. i want to attend West Point, and want to go to air assault school while im there. but, as you said, i hate hights. lol. so im guna start rock climbing to help me get over my fear.
