Look where the Oklahoma players were prior to when he was being downed or would've exited the end zone. He would've made it to at most the 10... and no blockers except for the guy who downed him who probably wouldn't have blocked for him because he expecting the returner to down it in the end zone.

@dhenry405 Stanford missed a total of 3 that game lol. Also if you pause the vidoe at 00:6 you can see that the returner was completely out of the endzone before being shoved back in, it should have been a safty and the ball returned to OSU.

@KingMKLA And if you listen to the announcers, it's the position of the ball, not the player that counts. His upper body and the ball were still in the endzone, so they got it to the 20.

he did that because if you are downed at your opponents goal line you get to automatically start at the 20 yard line, and he thought his teamate would get downed before that, meaning theyd lose some yards the couldve had.

It's simple. The teammate didnt think he could run it to at least the 20 so instead of risking it he pushed him back, downing the ball essentially, so that they would have the ball at the 20 yard line.I woulda never thought to do that though lmao!
