The "Chevy" cruze was engineered in Europe by Opel. The Design, the engine, the chassis, everything. Yeah the Eco-techn engines are European designed. You can thank the 42 MPG to Opel of Europe, not Chevy at all. The Focus is also European designed, except the engine is American.
The Chevrolet Cruze is a good looking car. Too bad they didn't place the Voltec Drive System on the Cruze. 40 miles of electric drive and a clean 35 mpg. All for $28,000 instead of $42,500.
i bought one based on how quite it was on the fwy..test drove the usual suspects in that class..jetta, civic, corolla...all nice cars but this one was the best choice for me..now i'm happy i got it mostly becuase it's quite AND i am averaging 37.3 mpg on my daily 115 mile commute 80% fwy 20% street and the fwy is heavy traffic especially in the evening commute...thought i' share my experience..

I test drove the LS model. Did seem noisy but was impressed that it had that manual shifter thingy, for a base model, that cars come with now a days. It did come with more features than expected. I was slightly impressed. I guess if you want good gas mileage just get a small car. I HATE small cars but my wife has me whipped so I have to buy a small car and this one has made it to my list cars I have considered purchasing.
Sorry the cruze ls is the only manual out of the line up, every other cruze is automatic! They even came out with a nice looking rs package but still. Sporty and automatic! Nice car none the less
I saw a cruze LTZ and man the interior is right out of the CTS and 23,000 is right on par with a loaded civic and corolla. I would love one in Imperial Blue with a turbo and six speed.
I test drove the LTZ trim and I gotta say I was shockingly surprised at how well put together this vehicle is! The handling is top notch, the interior is very inviting and the materials used are certainly not cheap. It's features are beyond sufficient and the exterior is pretty attractive. I gotta say Chevy set the bar high with the Cruze and they succeeded in giving their competitors a run for their money.
looks great, inside and out. BUT, is it anywhere near as reliable as a corolla or civic? i wouldn't consider buying one until we see if they have improved their reliability. my past experience was less than satisfactory even with routine maintenance. all my friends that owned any car from the big three had constant breakdowns (except for my friend with a neon). all my friends with honda's seemed to run forever with hardly any repair costs. i bought a toyota this summer and love it so far.
It's amazing by reading some of these comments how ignorant my fellow Americans are of the global car industry. You folks think like it is the 70's and there are still actually rivalries between the big three. If you are a car owner and are biased for a certain manufacturer instead of buying the best model in a segment despite branding and national origin, you are a complete moron.
BTW the Cruze has been made for three years in Europe and is based on an Opel. It's not a new car...ROFL
Sooo, lets get this straight... everyone is pissed off cause GM needed some help right? ok. cool. but thats kinda been over for a lil bit now and jap companies got bailouts to, just not truly publcly like GM. I sell the Cruzes and I was VERY skeptical when I started selling Chevys 2 years ago, I rode it out with them through all the troubles, and man oh man I am glad I did. This car is a great car!! World class, best interior, best gas mileage, most room inside and power windows, ac, power locks, navigation, XM radio, OnStar, Remote Keyless entry for under $17000! Great buy, seriously. Ive sold civics and corollas, they dont come close to this lil beast. Everyone is talking about chevy now!Way to go!

It would be nice if chevy decided to make a coupe version. The success of the civic lies in its universal appeal both young old old people like it. It was practical and sports and while it wasn't the best anything it was good at everything. A two door sport option would be a nice add-on to the line-up, otherwise I think not going to see much sales action. It's just a ho hum sedan with no particular quality that sets it apart. In short it's Chevy's Nissan Versa. Good but not good enough.
Why would you want a 2 door when you can get a 4 door for the same price?? Meaning, can people actually tell the difference between a four door and a two door? What's so special about a coupe? What is the difference?
@bodaishinboy yea but this car has a good build quality a nice interior/center stack, not only that it has a quiet smooth ride and sporty road manners, a quiet ride in a compact is hard to get, the civic is loud and sounds like ur driving with cement tires..
@muaath, forget what every nerd is telling you, women loves Chevys over Ford, Toyota, Nissians,Hyundai, etc! Believe I drove all of them and a Chevy will get you the most play! When any car is heard in a rap song, you are in! HA,HA!
@muuaath Did you consider test driving other vehicles in this category such as the Civic, Corolla, Sentra, Elantra, Forte, Focus, maybe even a Scion Xb, although not sure if the last one would make sense to test drive since its not a 4 door sedan rather a 4 door hatchback, cuv? Anyways, I decided to wait/hold off on purchasing the Cruze. I decided to wait for the upcoming 2012 Honda Civic and the also upcoming, 2012 Ford Focus. If you think it's the right car then go for it. IMHO i would wait.

Also you must be a real D bag if you want to tune a 1.4 liter 4 door compact and think it's cool just because it comes stock with a turbo. I think your better off sticking with a civic and putting a CAI and a fart can on it.
@Quanteus If you wanna stop going back and forth just shut up because everything out of your mouth is pure shit. This car is not that light and it will not drive or handle well under high speeds because it is a 4 door has a short wheel base (good in corners bad in a straight line at speeds over 100 i.e. 1/4 mile) and retains less body integrity than a 2 door coupe. And you must be a ricer if you think its easy to do engine swamp on a car like this. The engine bay wont fit shit. Dumbass

the thing is chevrolet has been given the chance before, but it has failed. i hope the best for GM, but you cant deny it has failed. the toyota corolla has never failed. (please dont talk about the recall because thats bullshit)
@skbuoy Chevrolet has been given the chance before, but with cars that you could clearly tell didn't have what it takes to compete even just by looking at them. The Cruze is different in that you can see right off the bat the thought that went into quality and appeal of the car, vs. the piece of crap Cobalt it's replacing. Over the last 3 or 4 years, GM has come a LONG way with their newer cars. Only problem now is that GM has to fight the public's preconceptions.
@Intramorph I have a Cavalier and I always thought is was a great car, drives great very reliable for me and it still runs great, until I read reviews on it. I guess I got the good one of the batch.
I'll agree with you on that with the preconceptions. However, GM was trying to make its changes during and before the company was forced into bankruptcy.
The Cruze's interior being mid-sized interior yet compact exterior will turn heads. This is a car that should appeal those buyers who are also considering the Civic, the Corolla, the Focus, and also the VW Jetta; whose size matches the Cruze.
@Intramorph Everyday I tell my friends that the Cruze is a game changer, and that it might possibly not set the bar, but be the bar... sadly they still believe in the crappy over rated Carolla. I can't wait to get this car and prove to them that this is the future. You are right, people's preconception has to change....
@Intramorph i agree, my friends parents just bought this for his little brother to go to college, he has an ltz nice rims and a nice ride smooth sharp handling and the little turbo is cool, my girls 08 civic rides like an old pickup
@skbuoy The Corolla has to be the most boring car on the road today. Completely unimaginative design. A car that someone who doesn't care at all about cars or driving would own. The Civic is probably a very reliable car, but I don't like that steeply sloped front end at all. It's like it doesn't have an engine compartment.
The Cruze is much better looking than either of those cars, plus it offers TEN airbags as standard equipment. How many do the Civic or Corolla have?
@242HP the corolla is a boring car, i agree with that, but its reliable, good on gas, cheap to maintain. it'll last forever. the cruze, just like the cobalt will fail.
@skbuoy You make some valid points about the Corolla, even if it is boring. As ror the Cruze, I own a 2006 Chevy and I'll be the first to admit that it doesn't compare in terms of reliability with the Japanese cars I've owned, BUT, it has been doing well apparently in the other countries where it's been sold, so I'm willing to hold off on judgement for a while until it's got some miles behind it here in the USA.
@242HP does that sum it up enough for you? And this car was first released in 2006. Still very good safety features even to this day, and it was their idea for implementing a crash system that is compatible with many different types of vehicles for better safety. It's not standard on ALL of their vehicles. The upcoming 2012 civic will dominate once again and set the standard.
@EpiDemic117 Hmmm.... You know, at this point, I don't even remember what I originally posted about this video, and don't have time to look. I won't argue that Hondas are good cars; I've owned 2 Accords myself. I think Chevy's marketing material indicated that the new Cruze had more airbags (a total of 10, I believe) than the competing Civic and Corolla, that's all. I haven't seen any info on the 2012 Civic yet.
@skbuoy its a new car so its a new start, chevy is making a really huge attempt at trying to fix their reliability history, i think time will tell but its too soon to judge now, i agree with you on the corolla (although out of all of the cars I'd probably stick with the civic.)
@skbuoy You don't know that yet it hasn't been here a month and people are all ready dissing the car. Give them a chance at least they are starting to try now.
@242HP Every Civic features dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, front side airbags and side-curtain airbags. The passenger's front side airbag has an Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) to prevent it from deploying if a child or small-statured person is detected in the airbag's path of deployment.
The Civic's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is a Honda exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions
@242HP The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is a Honda exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions.
@242HP The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash
Anyone who would like to have this a a hatchback would need to have their heads checked, I mean hatchbacks are ugly, lesser of a car... Crazy people (Commenting about idiots on a car website wanting this as hatchback)...
