I can't remember if I am thinking of the right war, but didn't the Russian Officers used to sit back from the battle with a machine gun to kill all retreating soldiers?
@0Awildgoose yes in WW2 russian soldiers that retreated or refused to fight were shot on the spot by their officers. usually with a pistol though. machine guns were in short supply.
@0Awildgoose You are confusing Red Army officers with Komsomol and NKVD regiments. Those both used to stablish rear lines behind the frontline to "fight the coward".
Also some regular officers and soldiers would shoot their own comrades if they saw them retreating without orders. Most of them just to avoid being the target of the NKVD themselves.

I think it would have been alot wiser to make more Panthers, but this wouldn't have helped either the Allies had alot more tanks then the German's could ever have amassed.

Even Wolfgang's book "Tigers in Combat" doesn't change the fact that the King Tiger was the most successfully tank to see combat in WW2. Yes, many were abandoned due to mechanical breakdowns, that is the simply truth.

@thegafferlives - Son, invading Russia wasn't a, "mistake". Nazi Germany was trying to get to the Russian oil fields and if they had, the war might have gone of for years longer. If you will read the history books, you will find that after the Normandy invasion of D-Day, the German army was pushed all the way back to Berlin, Germany in about a year. It was a continual process of retreat. Erwin Rommel himself, (the desert fox), stated that if the allies landed in Europe, Germany would lose.
Rommel was referring to the second front. Without the russian campaign there would be no second front therefore D-day would not have been possible. The number of german troops available as a result would have seen to that.

I hardly think Hitler had disappointment issues over a tank engine. Hitler was disappointed for the KT's performance in the Ardennes Offensive which this huge tank was not designed for. Narrow roads and thick heavy forests were not an ideal location for this beast. The KT preformed much better on the Russian front and a famous battle outside Berlin in which a handful of KT's held back hordes of T34/85's and JS2's until they were overrun by sheer numbers.

And Hitler digged his own grave for his own built empire. The vast amount of Resources spended in Tiger II, Jagdtigers where enourmous.If those where used in the Production in Panzer IV or Panthers, it would have stalled the war much longer

Also maybe If they'd just built Panzer4 and stug3 and no heavies at all there whole Panzer force would have been far bigger in 1943 already and they might have had the numbers to actually stop the T-34. The Panzer4 with a long barelled 75mm was more than capable of destroying the T-34 armed with medium velocity 76.2mm. The German heavy tanks took so much resources for so few actual vehicles (and unreliable) that they probably shortened the war a lot. God bless the heavy tanks!

Tank in the cities are vulnerable exposing weak side, rear and top armor to enemy fire. Every WW2 tank without exception is a bad choice for urban warfare specially if the enemy is well organized.
That is correct especialy in the king Tigers case it was sometimes to big to even to go into towns. Also during the battle of Berlin Soviet Tanks were pick off from hand held anti tank weapons and were easy targets because they were not able to manuver as well in the streets.
I've always been of the opinion that had Hitler not been a psychopathic murderer and just said all Germans are equal and superior to all other nationalities we would still see the red,white and black flying all over Deutchland.
If he had, the Germans would have the nuke(with the Jewish and conventional thinking German scientists forced from Germany to the USA to create USA's nuke) and half of Russia would have been sympathetic to the Nazi's as they wouldn't have rounded up and killed hundreds of people, the second day from when they liberated these bordering Russian areas and Poland. This is from Adrennes 1945 where 151 King Tigers were used. Only 20 were destroyed there and 10 of them from allied aircraft, 2 from Bazookas in very close combat and rest from technical defekts. No one lost by allied tanks! So if you were a allied infantryman and see a Tiger II, you better run from yourlife. There is almost nothing you can do (despite very short range but germans had always infanztry in the near of the tanks so its very idffuclt.
Wrong. Veterans say that some panzer never left the assembly area due to maintenance problems. Individual tanks positively documented as having participated in the Ardennes Offensive total 21. Of these 13 have been documented as destroyed in combat and 7 abandoned virtually intact. One is in the Patton Museum and three at the Army Ordinance Museum with one on display, One is on display in Belgium. None fell to Allied Aircraft.(From "Tigers in the Ardenne" and the dairy of Werner Wendt)
German tanks are overpraisedand overrated. Tigers and Panthers were tens times more expensive to build than the all superior T-34. "King Tiger" was several times more expensive than IS-2, and that was the heaviest tank of the war! Weaponary needs to be efficient, simplified and reliable, the statistics come later. And this the Russians do best.
Well, Russian tanks were cheap, reliable, and easy to use. But cramped, robust, and their strength was more in numbers than in strengh of a tank. Panzer IV was cheap, relable and easy for maintanance. But Hitler was a madman, and always requested something big and new...wich overstreched whole Germany. Well, we're both luck that he was like that :D
First of all, the T-34 or any sort of Russian tank had/has all-around capabiltiy, in both firepower, protection, reliability, speed, etc. Numbers had nothing to do with how an individual tank operated.
It's armour protection was some 45mm (or more, I don't remeber right now). But, if you take a look at kill ratio, every German tank destroyed scores of Russian tanks before being destroyed. If numbers of Russian and German tanks were equal, Russian tanks would all be destroyed...
Different variations. Germans tended to build more heavy tanks than any other class, and T-34 is not a heavy tank. Put an IS-2/3 with any Tiger/Panther, the Germans would be all destroyed.
Many IS tanks were destroyed in action as well. And tank isn't worth a thing, if it's crew has rudimentary training, often below basic instructions. Red Army tankists had such training. Averagley, a week of training was considered enough by instructors. Many tanks missed what could be a 100% hit.. Mistakes in driving these tanks were also common, so many tanks were stuck in various diches, ponds, rivers, etc...
The Tiger Tank 2 had extremely heavy armor and firepower. It was perfect for defence. It's only problem was it's considerably slow speed due to it's enormous weight (turret=70metrictonnes).
The Russians generally did practically win the war considering they spammed t-34s which were superior to panzer 4s (not Tigers) in thousands over a huge front that made it impossible for the Germans to defend. The British and Americans would have been wiped out if Russia did not enter the war.

Also some regular officers and soldiers would shoot their own comrades if they saw them retreating without orders. Most of them just to avoid being the target of the NKVD themselves.

It really pains me when people make statements like they do about the KT. A piece of Junk it certainly was not...
Less then 400 were ever built to few to have made any sort of impact on the war at this late stage.
I think it would have been alot wiser to make more Panthers, but this wouldn't have helped either the Allies had alot more tanks then the German's could ever have amassed.
The KT was a hell of a Tank but so what it hopelessly out numbered!!

Even Wolfgang's book "Tigers in Combat" doesn't change the fact that the King Tiger was the most successfully tank to see combat in WW2. Yes, many were abandoned due to mechanical breakdowns, that is the simply truth.
But that is the exact reason, whiy the King Tiger is credited to have the best kill-to-loss ratio of all time, because only a few saw combat but they killed thousands of enemy AFVs and tanks on both fronts! (mostly on the eastern front in Hungary)

If you will read the history books, you will find that after the Normandy invasion of D-Day, the German army was pushed all the way back to Berlin, Germany in about a year. It was a continual process of retreat. Erwin Rommel himself, (the desert fox), stated that if the allies landed in Europe, Germany would lose.

I hardly think Hitler had disappointment issues over a tank engine. Hitler was disappointed for the KT's performance in the Ardennes Offensive which this huge tank was not designed for. Narrow roads and thick heavy forests were not an ideal location for this beast. The KT preformed much better on the Russian front and a famous battle outside Berlin in which a handful of KT's held back hordes of T34/85's and JS2's until they were overrun by sheer numbers.

Also maybe If they'd just built Panzer4 and stug3 and no heavies at all there whole Panzer force would have been far bigger in 1943 already and they might have had the numbers to actually stop the T-34. The Panzer4 with a long barelled 75mm was more than capable of destroying the T-34 armed with medium velocity 76.2mm. The German heavy tanks took so much resources for so few actual vehicles (and unreliable) that they probably shortened the war a lot. God bless the heavy tanks!

Really? 501 SS Heavy Pz and 506 Heavy Pz were both equipped with Tiger II. There was also some Tiger 1 equipments with 9 Pz Div from a FunkLenk (sp?) battalion. Easily verifiable - see Danny Parker for starters.

The king tiger was too big for city fighting are in close fighting, small roads and week bridges. The king tiger had not had the bugs worked out so it was a joke with many German solders on its poor mechanical record. I believe little over 1,000 were made for the Germans.
It was a waste of money Hitler should have produce tanks that had a proven track record in the German army.

kcfusiongurl you don't know, you only believe. lol. exact there were only 480 pieces of the King Tiger produced during WW2. however most of them had mechanical failure, nearly about 70% of all KTs were were disabled and abandoned because of breakdowns. there were only about 80 operatinal King Tigers on the west and eastern front which served in the 503rd, 502nd, 501st, 101, 102, 103 Heavy tank battalions. they were very successfully, killing nearly 5000 enemy tanks and lost only 480 Tigers.

Germans produced 490-492 Tiger II tanks.Tiger II was a good tank but as you mentioned it wasnt good in the cities- too slow and too big.But it was a heavy armored weapon that could be used as a shield.Panther would be a better investement and German generals knew it but Hitler couldt accept it.Hitler was a very bad militarist

Tank in the cities are vulnerable exposing weak side, rear and top armor to enemy fire. Every WW2 tank without exception is a bad choice for urban warfare specially if the enemy is well organized.

That is correct especialy in the king Tigers case it was sometimes to big to even to go into towns. Also during the battle of Berlin Soviet Tanks were pick off from hand held anti tank weapons and were easy targets because they were not able to manuver as well in the streets.

Most late WW2 tanks made by Germany was mostly designd for open area combat since they where equipt with the 8.8 cm FlaK cannon.

If he had, the Germans would have the nuke(with the Jewish and conventional thinking German scientists forced from Germany to the USA to create USA's nuke) and half of Russia would have been sympathetic to the Nazi's as they wouldn't have rounded up and killed hundreds of people, the second day from when they liberated these bordering Russian areas and Poland. That means some slav support as the Russian killed thousands of jews and other people on their conquered half of poland.

This is from Adrennes 1945 where 151 King Tigers were used. Only 20 were destroyed there and 10 of them from allied aircraft, 2 from Bazookas in very close combat and rest from technical defekts. No one lost by allied tanks! So if you were a allied infantryman and see a Tiger II, you better run from yourlife. There is almost nothing you can do (despite very short range but germans had always infanztry in the near of the tanks so its very idffuclt.

Wrong. Veterans say that some panzer never left the assembly area due to maintenance problems. Individual tanks positively documented as having participated in the Ardennes Offensive total 21. Of these 13 have been documented as destroyed in combat and 7 abandoned virtually intact. One is in the Patton Museum and three at the Army Ordinance Museum with one on display, One is on display in Belgium. None fell to Allied Aircraft.(From "Tigers in the Ardenne" and the dairy of Werner Wendt)

German tanks are overpraisedand overrated. Tigers and Panthers were tens times more expensive to build than the all superior T-34. "King Tiger" was several times more expensive than IS-2, and that was the heaviest tank of the war! Weaponary needs to be efficient, simplified and reliable, the statistics come later. And this the Russians do best.

Well, Russian tanks were cheap, reliable, and easy to use. But cramped, robust, and their strength was more in numbers than in strengh of a tank. Panzer IV was cheap, relable and easy for maintanance. But Hitler was a madman, and always requested something big and new...wich overstreched whole Germany. Well, we're both luck that he was like that :D

First of all, the T-34 or any sort of Russian tank had/has all-around capabiltiy, in both firepower, protection, reliability, speed, etc. Numbers had nothing to do with how an individual tank operated.

It's armour protection was some 45mm (or more, I don't remeber right now). But, if you take a look at kill ratio, every German tank destroyed scores of Russian tanks before being destroyed. If numbers of Russian and German tanks were equal, Russian tanks would all be destroyed...

Different variations. Germans tended to build more heavy tanks than any other class, and T-34 is not a heavy tank. Put an IS-2/3 with any Tiger/Panther, the Germans would be all destroyed.

Many IS tanks were destroyed in action as well. And tank isn't worth a thing, if it's crew has rudimentary training, often below basic instructions. Red Army tankists had such training. Averagley, a week of training was considered enough by instructors. Many tanks missed what could be a 100% hit.. Mistakes in driving these tanks were also common, so many tanks were stuck in various diches, ponds, rivers, etc...

The Tiger Tank 2 had extremely heavy armor and firepower. It was perfect for defence. It's only problem was it's considerably slow speed due to it's enormous weight (turret=70metrictonnes).
The Russians generally did practically win the war considering they spammed t-34s which were superior to panzer 4s (not Tigers) in thousands over a huge front that made it impossible for the Germans to defend. The British and Americans would have been wiped out if Russia did not enter the war.

This Tank wasnt that good at all! It had engine problem cause the engine was to small to drive such a heavy tank.

Yes...doubtlessly,.it was the worst tank of the war.You could set it ablaze with a ronson lighter,and allied forces were laughing at it...n`est-ce pas...it never knocked out a single Sherman...in fact,it was not even armoured...a hard-paper tank rather than anything else...the gun was a fake one, too...
