  • Fantastic this video with these wonderful locomotives.

  • @mota1744 Thank you, glad you enjoyed : )

  • Awesome double big boy. The cars looked nice, too.

  • what happens when you have to mow your grass ? are you like super careful ?

  • @clockhunter322000 Actually because of the overlap I left into the grass I only have to push mow down the side so it's not bad at all actually.

  • @rayman4449 that balls on your sir ! i would be hand cutting each damn blade to make sure i don't mess up such a masterpiece

  • Those r water proof tracks right?

  • @TheJamesbondsong Yes they are, they don't oxidize so they never need to be cleaned.

  • wow those locomotives are just incredible!!!!

  • @PratikL20 Thx glad you like them as well! This is really an awesome scale of model trains.

  • @rayman4449 from where do you buy this awesome garden railroad stuff, do you have to be an electrical engineer or something in order to do this set up!!!!!

  • @PratikL20 Well, I used to get all my stuff from Ridgeroadstation but they have since closed down. For MTH stuff I am now a dealer so I buy it all direct. The rest I generally get from Jim at gscalejunction (dot) com. Haha no not at all, there is definitely a learning curve with it all. There is a bit to consider when making decisions on what to go with... there's a lot of choices out there!

  • that- is amazing

  • where's the smoke ? :D

  • @ElOthemany Haha none that day ; )

  • 1:23 looks freaking real

  • nice loco's (;

    but very expensiv or?

  • AWESUM VID, DUDE!!!!! Aways a mod, RR!!!!

  • @booksbenji Thanks man!

  • GREAT KINO !!!

  • If all that grass was yellow and the fence was gone id be fooled in to thinking that the train was rolling through wheat fields in the mid west

  • @jerry91a I was thinking the same thing about the fence.

    love the sound.

    Joe

  • @joemc111 Thanks Joe

  • @jerry91a Thanks :)

  • i would hate to be the guy at the crossing if they ever doubled headed real big boys in the 40's yould be at the crossing for at least 15 minutes or longer lol

  • I seen a garden bigboy and man it was huge must have been at lest 50 pounds how haevy was yours i dont have the bigboy but i seen it at centerline hobbies in hyanis ma they wanted at lest 1,000 dollers just for a toy train put rages

  • @busterbrown17 Hi there, Yes those USA Trains 1:29 Big Boys are HUGE and the engine without tender weighs 45lbs. These have die cast metal frames but plastic boilers so they don't weigh as much. Engine without tender is 18lbs. Pulling power is about the same because the MTH has traction tires. The MTH engines sold for 1000 dollars the USA 3500. Hope you can get either one they both great engines. My USA stays in a display case but run the MTH ones regularly.

  • @busterbrown17 They ask for that much money for brass diesels in HO

  • @jerry91a It's another reason why I like this scale, I feel you get a lot for the money.

  • Terrific !!

  • One of those Big Boys needs a new/different number! They can't BOTH be 4004! Might I suggest 4023? If your curious why, just look that loco up and you'll see why I like it! Awesome video/layout! Very impressive!

  • @OmahaTom Hehe Thanks and glad you liked. There is actually a third 4004 on the back end pushing. Check out some of the other videos posted to check it out. Yeah I wish there were some other road numbers but to keep costs down they only produced one road number and I didn't want to go down the road of trying to change the numbers >: O Oh I agree 4023 would have been a great number to have had! Great photos of the last move are online.

  • How do you have the layout powered??

  • @FECRWY Hi, do you mean power supply, wiring or other? You can visit my website and see the Garden Railroad repair and modifications page to see detail writeups on how and what I used for wiring, connections, power supplies etc. Along with repair and maintenance suggestions on Garden Railroad engines and rolling stock.

  • Wow long train and it is a big boy

  • Great video and sound too.

  • #4004 still exist as a static display in Cheyenne, Wyoming

  • So MTH makes G scale Big Boys? I thought only USA trains did?

  • @Peppurr1 Hi there, yes they do in 1:32 scale as USA is in 1:29. MTH's sold for around 1000 and the USA for 3500 so they are and were much more affordable. In steam, MTH also released a Challenger, Triplex, Hudson and GS-4 and have all been great engines and well made.

  • @rayman4449 So do they still sell these cheaper ones? I cant find any on ebay.

  • @Peppurr1 The last production run has sold out. They do appear on ebay periodically so you can find one if you want to get one.

  • @Peppurr1 accuracraft also makes big boys

  • how much money is 1 of those big boys?

  • @RailfanningRulez 1000 each and that comes with MTH Protosound 2 sound, timed smoke, lights and control.

  • It's a really great video!!

  • @musukari1031 Thank you glad you enjoyed!

  • I haven't looked through all of your video's yet, so i'm not sure if you have done what i'm about to ask, but have you ever linked all of your big engine's together? it's probably obvious, but that would be the first thing i would do, and i'v only just started saving for my first 2-8-8-2 mallet! my friend, you have some amazing engine's, some amazing video's and you are needless to say a credit to modeller's and to youtube.

  • @ELECTRICOTION Thank you very much on that. You know I've talked about doing on big lashup for some time but still haven't done it. Maybe your bringing it up will finally get me to do it... haha Great news on the planned acquisition of the Aristocraft 2-8-8-2! I think you're going to be very happy with the purchase as you get alot for the money and you will like the overall size, it's big! Enjoy and keep me posted on how you make out. >: )

  • @rayman4449 excelent! i look forward to seeing the final train, now that's going to be massive! yeah, one of the first thing's i ever came across in g gauge was the mallet. i'v found a place that sell's them relativly cheap, so half my budget goes on saving for that, the other half on building up a stock of track, and other bit's and bob's.

  • I find no words ! Divine !?! ...

  • @SpaceCowboy641 Thank you SC.

  • omg the bogboys, triplexes and challengers are beast ing G scale! lol have you ever wanted to like idk how to say this but, have you ever wanted to ride a train car like in live steam scale?? i do! lol i bet that thos engine could pull you if u lash all of them together! but the problem is how r u going to have a good train car that would support ur weight? i say get a 2x6 or 2x8 and make it 4-5 feet long with lots of trucks on it--> make a homemade one! i will guarantee you those beasts would

  • @tlxrailroad LOL I think you're right :) The engines are pretty cool in this scale it's why I got sucked in by it. You know I have thought of that myself but never tried it. They are very strong pullers but but the coupler posts on most engines run the risk of breaking at some point and just never wanted to risk it. On flat and level ground it certainly wouldn't be an issue.

  • @rayman4449 well the coupler wont break if u use those fake-solid-one-piece coupler that you put on the front of the steam engines. then, if ur couplers do break, you can replace those instead of the expensive operating couplers. what you could do is

3 bigboys would pull in reverse,

whatever challengers you have in reverse,

that special car that can handle a human body,

then have the 3 triplexes pushing in forward.

  • @tlxrailroad Hi there. That is a good idea. My concern actually isn't so much of the coupler itself as much as the the coupler post it's attached to. Even on my Dash-9s where i've installed Kadee couplers, the post they are attached to is molded to the bottom of the platform. So while those can pull a good amount of weight without issue, at some point you are at risk of possbily breaking the front or rear platform off the engine (or the coupler post).

  • @tlxrailroad I mean in the end they probably would be ok as they are all very strong haha I just don't know that I would want to risk something breaking and then be having to figure out how to fix it haha!

  • Great video of fantastic equipment in a nice layout.

I see that your Youtube name is an engine number.

    You're hardcore, for sure. :-)

  • @rixretros Thank you for the kind reply. Hehe and you're right on that Southern Pacific 4449 >: )

  • Ave Big Boy!

  • @Hanvay = )

  • Your freight trains wheels were slipping with both of those Big Boys

  • best train vid i've ever seen so far!!!!!!!!!

PS, how much money did it cost to get all three big boy trains?

  • @magicphilip10 Hi. Thank you very much :) The engines were 1000 bucks each so 3000 total. Comes with the sound, control and smoke all built in. Considering what you get you get a lot for the money.

  • that way mad cool

  • @darkkennight Thank you my friend.

  • Is the big boy in 00 gauge?

  • @joew2431 Hi, these engines are 1:32scale (One Gauge) also called G scale.

  • Just beautiful !! Thanks !!

  • @chetirepyat Thanks glad you liked : )

  • Im a bigger fan of the 2-6-6-6 Allegheny. It was, according to historians, more powerful then a bigboy. Either way, both steamers kicked ass when it came to dragging freights up their respective grades. Nice Collection buddy. Hope to see alot more of it.

  • @Dakotajohnboy Thank you. I wish we had an affordable 2-6-6-6 available cause I would own at least one. Always liked the look of it with the drivers in-front of the firebox. I've read that the 2-6-6-6 had a tractive effort rating of 110,200lbs which was lower than the 4-8-8-4's 135,375lbs but that it had a rating of 6700-6900hp at 45mph where I think the big boy was 6600hp. I'm like you that it doesn't matter, both were great examples of the ultimate in steam motive power.

  • 2:47 is the best shot I have ever scene

  • Oh, man THIS IS TRULY AWESOME! TRULY. THANKS!

  • @NgaiOlaudah Thanks and glad you liked it!

  • great video how manyt hoppers where on that train?

  • @k41361 Hi there, thank you and glad you liked it too : ) There should have been 60 cars total.

  • 2 Big Boy's,Now that is a whole lot of "Pull Power". I think "BiG BOY" has made its mark as the best train engine in the world,it has power, style and class

  • @flowartist881 I agree, the Big Boy is an all time great icon of steam power : )

  • Awesome! Those are some really gorgeous engines you have!!

  • @dep92 Thank you, I really enjoy that set : )

  • nice layout and loco's, I like the line of coal cars you are pulling with that. About how many freight/coal cars can one Big Boy pull? I am more of an HO gauge fan but I like these bigger outdoors versions.

  • @HellzNord Hi there, thanks. I actually came from HO myself and converted over cause I liked the scale so much. On level ground we had one of these pull 120 of these coal cars. Each engine(18lbs=engine only) has an avg pull force of about 7.5lbs which is about the same as the USA Trains (45lbs=engine only) die cast Big Boy. (Both of which are the strongest pulling G scale engines I've ever tested) The strong pull force is because the MTH has traction tires on two axles per engine set.

  • what is the upper track for? do the lower tracks connect to it?

  • @trains457 Hi there, yes I drive the trains straight out of the house down that long bridge to the mainlines. There are pics on my website of the whole layout under the year 2006 - track expansion project.

  • Still the absolute best sounding engines on all of YouTube.

  • @PeteM234 Thanks Pete. I think these four engines are the best ones I have when it comes to sound. I'm glad you can get an idea for how good they sound in the video.

  • How do you power all this? I am just starting my layout with all MTH and having wiring problems. Can you tell me how you do it? Thanks

  • @G3RIVER Hi, see the DCS Tips page on my website, it has an extensive amount of detail and suggestions. Also see the modifications page for additional information on the wire type, etc. Email me if you need further help or have questions. Good luck.

  • @rayman4449

Thanks for responding to my question. Your information was very helpful.

  • HI Raymond nice video , keep it up.

  • who are you bill gates, or warren buffet? Really nice Railroad you have

  • Are you rich? each of those engines must have cost 4000 $ each!

  • @dogrichmancat These engines sell for 1000 each.

  • Mind blowing!!! I could probably afford two feet of track right now!!! Lol Watching this video over and over gives me hope, that one day, I will have my own!! Thanks for giving me hope raymann!!!!

  • man that is bitchin 2.5! thats some freakin money right there! you should invest in the UP northern 844!

  • there like a beat of there own lol :)

  • cracking vid!!! 5* from "tractorboy in the UK"

  • hey you got some real good videos there really cool

but is there a website from you with a plan or a picture from the layout ??? would be interesting to see

5stars and i love the big boy one of the greatest locomotives ever

  • Its... wonderful! My dream since when i was a child (not many years ago luckily :D), but Marklin 1 rail resist also to rain and snow? Because i'm really thinking to build it in my garden...

  • @IGMD80 Hi, yes I've had my layout deployed since 2006 (using all Stainless Steel rail and clamps) and it's been maintenance free. I never have to clean the rail or worry about conductivity problems. I would use Stainless Steel over Brass outdoors. Good luck and hope you do build one in your garden.

  • @rayman4449 Thank you very much!!

  • is that #4004 on the front? The real one is on display in Cheyenne WY ;-) I wants one but the price is ouch! lol

  • Awesome video!

  • how do you keep the track clean outside?

  • It stays clean without any effort from me. Because it's not brass track it doesn't oxidize.

  • @rayman4449 My friend, are you running stainless? I had no idea you could run 1 gauge outside. I'm happy as a puppy peeing on the floor! What state do you live in? I live in Co.

  • Hi silverfox, yes that's stainless. Best damn track for outdoors let me tell you. Never need to clean it as it never oxidizes. I'm in Kansas, right next door.

  • @rayman4449 better watch out for tornadoes!

  • Is it possible to put an MTH Proto-Smoke unit in a bachmann 4-6-0?

  • It is, in fact on my website I have a video of my Bachman 4-6-0 running under MTH DCS Protosound 2 and it has the smoke unit installed. See under DCS installs page. I need to post it here on youtube.

  • Cool! Can you send me the instructions?

  • Installing is where it gets complicated... to safely power the heating elements and fan motor you need to have the proper electronics to drive it. You either need to design your own (which I haven't done) or install an MTH DCS Protosound 2 board in the engine. DCS requires a motor with a flywheel and as they come stock the 4-6-0s don't have them. So install is a bit more complicated. There aren't specific instructions to speak of. The DCS kit has general instructions not specific to engine

  • Oh boy. Do you think that my local hobby shop could help?

  • My guess is probably not but you can ask/try, it can't hurt to ask. I started doing installs for folks because of the number of people that kept asking. There may be some others doing DCS installs in G scale but don't know of any.

  • Oh that's alright. It would be cool if you did that. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. And have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! O:-)

  • and also were can you buy the trains and track at?

  • If you go to my website and see the "Links to other websites" then see the Dealers section, I get all my MTH stuff from Jim's electric trains. Other stuff I get from Ridgeroadstation. St Aubins is another but you have to watch those guys closely, I have been overcharged REGULARLY by those guys.

  • I didn't know MTH offers the Big Boy in G-scale. In your video, the MTH Big Boy looks more detailed and realistic in G-scale than O-scale. Did you look at the Big Boys from USATrains and Accucraft? About 10-15 years ago Fine Arts Models offered a purportedly museum-quality Big Boy for $15,000 and only made 150, so I imagine it was impractical for your purposes. I enjoyed watching your video of your big articulateds.

  • For the money I think G scale is hard to beat. You get alot of detail and yet pay the same to even less than O scale engines. I have one USA Big Boy and it stays on display in a case. I saw the Accucraft and would prefer the USA for the little extra money. I've seen the pics on the Fine Arts website of it and it's quite remarkable. Thanks, glad you enjoyed! I do have pics and a video of the USA Big Boy in action on my website.

  • can you make a video showing the whole layout

  • Hmmm, you know that is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that. If you go to my website and look under "2006" see the track expansion project you can see pictures of what the entire thing looks like. I have a lot of photos. Let me know if that helps some.

  • how long did it take you to set the track up

  • I took a couple of weeks off from work and got it mostly completed in that time. (except for some finishing touches.) The way I did my 'roadbed' made for a relatively quick and so far stable foundation.

  • also how much did it all cost

  • Hmmm, I don't really remember to be honest. I did have to save up for a bit to get it all. Each of the two big loops are about 235ft and I'm using all stainless steel split jaw clamps. I think what cost the most was the James Bond Death Lasers I have secretly installed protecting the layout.

  • Hey, I am thinking of getting a G scale Triplex from MTH. What is your impression of it? I have a few of their HO scale engines and I am happy with their performance on DCC and on DCS!

  • The One Gauge Triplex is by far their best release. All metal frame, solid metal wheels, driver quartering is perfect on every engine set of every engine I've seen. Has three smoke units: front, whistle, and tender. Orig sound file volumes were low, but they released updated file that is easily loaded to the engine. (avail from their website and mine) Only real mod I think was necessary was to replace the speaker and remove the rear speaker enclosure. Great value.

  • Excellent video and very realistic. I have an MTH BB and one day will have a layout for it..Keep them videos coming!!

  • Thanks :) Good luck on your future layout.

  • hey rayman You ever seen the REAL #4004 in Cheyenne,Wyoming? The thing is HUGE

  • Hi mircobusss, I have seen the 4023 and the one in St Louis and they are huge! Magnificent machines.

  • cool heh someday (never lol) I want a G scale Big Boy BUT it gotta be #4004 Then I'll take it to Cheyenne with LOTS of track & a really long extention cord & run the loco next to the real one LOL

  • man thats a long train... all the more realistic.

  • Hi Rayman! Wonder if you wouldn't mind selling me one of your MTH Big Boys? Beside the fact you simply have too many locomotives, I'd really love an MTH Big Boy and can't find one anywhere. I think you bought them all! =) But seriously, if you ever would like to sell one, I would love to buy it from you--I've been looking for one of those for sooo long. Thanks! And thanks for sharing such fun videos!

  • Hi! haha if I ever do I most certainly will. >: ) You may be able to find them periodically on ebay. Going price kind of fluctuates and right now is probably the time to watch and bid with the economy being as bad as it is, you may be able to get one at a good price although we've seen some lately go for 1300 dollars. I tell you they are great engines.. run and sound great.

You're welcome and glad you enjoy them too!

  • That is a really sweet layout and and the realism of those locomotives and sound is amazing..... thanks for sharing this video.

  • As the weight of the locomotive?

    beautiful sound!!

    the image is very realistic

  • Thanks! That's what I'm trying to shoot for.

Each engine weighs 19lbs stock (I've added 1lb to the front of the boiler so mine are 20lb) the tender is an additional 8.5lbs.

Without a doubt these are the best sounding steamers I have. The DCS Protosound 2 sound is fantastic.

  • how do you run your trains outdoors without damaging them???

  • Hi Jimmy. As long as you have good trackwork, good body mounted couplers and don't run your trains too fast in a sharp corner you really shouldn't have situations where something can be damaged. Every once in a while if it's really windy a car may get blown over and cause a derailment but if you cut the power quickly you can keep it from being a big pileup! >: )

  • cool, thanks for the advice. I tried it with a lionel 4-4-2 steam locomotive and it didn't live long in my backyard...... i used fastrack and even with that dirt and grass still got caught in the gears and it fell over onto the concrete patio and thats what finally killed it.... sad end.

  • Sorry to hear about the Lionel. I do recall hearing those engines had a reputation for being unreliable so it may not have been all your fault. It's one reason why I went with the roadbed I did (hardiplank under rolled shingle material) to keep the grass and weeds away. Good luck and maybe you can get back into largescale at some point, you can't beat the wow factor! >: )

  • ya but what is really sad is that i did the same exact run with a MTH new york central diesiel swithcher and it came back fine with not even a scratch or a piece of grass stuck in it.

  • Now thats a coal train!

  • Nice!!!

  • Wow!! Go big or go home ;) I have an H.O. scale Big Boy and I've seen the real thing at the museum in Sacramento. Such a fascinating piece of machinery. Great job!

  • Thanks! So right, the Big Boys were an amazing piece of mechanical engineering.

  • RAYMAN!!! A big boy consist!! you really out did yourself with your set up. Engines, rolling stock, layout and the camera too. If you get a minute, check out my vid: "model trains big boy 4015 & challengers" PS don't laugh, I still have a carpet RR!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Thanks! We all start out somewhere and at remember, at least you can enjoy your engines inside all year round. :)

  • are those trains expensive?

  • Hi, these MTH engines are sold out but sold for 1000 dollars each. The cars were bought for 25 dollars each + 5 dollars/car for kadee couplers. USA Trains has a 1:29 die cast metal Big Boy they sell for 3500 dollars and Accucraft a brass version for 2400. (you do get what you pay for) So, while these aren't real cheap, comparing to other mfg and even some other scales, it's not too bad.

  • WOW! And to think that at one time, that could actualy have been seen on the main line. 5***** and faved! Nice vid man, keep up the good work.

  • Thank you!

  • Nice elephant ears on the locomotive

  • Thanks. They are from their One Gauge Grey Challenger, just painted up.

  • Fantastic! Great coal drag. I did not notice a front coupler on the lead engine. How did you mechanically connect the second and third engines of the lash? 5 Stars! Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you! I've installed a functional Kadee G scale coupler on the front of each engine. I put in the extra effort to keep the original functionality the same and it can be rotated back into the front of the pilot so all you see is the front coupler door if you want.

  • Wow! Neat.

  • Thanks!

  • how much does one weigh?!?!

  • The engine alone not including the tender weighs 18 lbs. They have an all metal frame. Mine weight 19 as I've added 1 lb in the front of the boiler to make it sit down better.

  • Jesus H. man, u dont run them on the bridge do u?

  • Sure do. The bridge is how I get them back in the house. (I made a flap door on the side of the house.) The bridge is made of 5/4 hardiplank board (90% concrete + 10% woodfiber) REALLY strong stuff! I have a 1:29 USA Trains Big Boy, all die cast metal. The shipping box the engine (not including tender) weighed 77 lbs! Now THAT is real beast. Finest dang Largescale model I've ever seen too. Just beautiful.

  • wow man, i could watch them things run forever lol. how much did the all metal one cost? i noticed on ur site u only hav 1 vid of it. i gotta see more of that one!

  • um im an idiot but, how does doubleheading work? does the track send the same signal to both engines?

  • Each engine has a DCS Protosound 2 board and each has a unique identifier assigned to it. I create a 'lash-up' which displays as one single engine but sends commands to all three engines (two up front and the pusher at the back) so one command from the remote is sent to all three at the same time. Each engine has an optical reader the PS2 board uses to read a striped flywheel to precisely maintain the speed you tell them you want to run. You say go 1 SMPH and all engines go precisely that.

  • oh, that makes sense. i always wondered thanks

  • They go precisely that as the board can tell through the optical reader whether to increase or decrease power to the motors. It does this very rapidly and allows all engines to maintain an incredible level of speed precision underload or not. It's a remarkable sound and control system.

  • I just my trainset last chrismas. i beautiful pennsy 2-8-0 three car frieght train with DCS. I have a SP 4449 from RailKing Imperial Series in the 2009 volume 2. I also have a william's GG-1 and a Pennsy F-3. I have well over 30 freights. with most being boxcars, i mainly focus on pennsyvania, LIRR, Alaska, Southern Pacific and BNSF. Oh and can you reply to me on how to get DCS updates and MTH Railware Updates? By the way, great UP. i love DCS. I think MTH is so much better than lionel

  • any problem running/wiring DCS for outdoor use?

  • If you do it right you should have few problems. I will send you a note directly.

  • Thats amazing! i bet each on of those Big boys costs well over 1500$ ea?

  • Thanks for the comment. :) Actually they can be had for 1000 dollars each and that is equipped with MTH DCS protosound 2 sound and control. These things sound really good.
