Socialism is a very good idea, but I'm not poor so I don't want it. If the poor people gain political power and this country becomes socialist. I'd still be happy. Capitalism is a blight on society and the overly conservative hypocrites who preach that God does not want this, God does not want that seem to be unaware of how greedy they themselves are. I make 260k a year, please, redistribute my wealth
That is what liberals don't get. You can't make a society better off by taking wealth from a few and giving it to the poor. It might help the poor for a short time but in the long run everyone suffers. The poor become dependant & never do for themselves. This creates multi generational poverty and the rich eventually don't see the point in putting in more effort if they don't get a reward for that effort. Why work 60 hr weeks & be on call 24/7 if there is no benefit in it? Pretty simple concept
Well, O'Brien is a democrat :'( and O'Rourke is a libertarian. So their politics doesn't go well together, I guess that's why Conan is being, a bit rude. (I'm a libertarian as well)
@pedrodemellodotnet Yeah, I agree, O'Brien's intelligent, and has a unique sense of humor that should mesh well with a National Lampooon guy like O'Rourke. I like O'Rourke, both for his humor and his politics, and I think he's a good guy, but he's a bit odd, and he may be an egomaniac; maybe O'Brien saw something we didn't.
You are only so convinced of utopian ideologies because you have no background in economics... study the principle of productivity and reassess your statement.
Not that simple. You have to have a government that keeps an eye on the rich and checks their power. Handouts don't work. You tell the rich, you can do whatever you want with your money so long as it's not completely screwing over honest average American's. You have to be careful to not overregulate them though it's the rich that has to create wealth and open up markets. If that's how they're getting rich and not running scams or feeding off moral hazards, the economy is for the better.
Helping poor people is a good thing. People who have the money SHOULD give their money to help people who are underpriveledged. But it's unconstitutional to create legislation that FORCES the rich to give their money away. History shows that if people can't keep the money that they work for, they're not going to work. No man has a right to another man's property
What??? No part of what you said made sense. You imply that all liberals are inherently likeable -- that the entire political spectrum is defined by whether or not you're a nice guy. That's flat-out retarded: politics and manners aren't the same thing, and sweeties and bastards are distributed evenly. And O'Rourke is no sweety. He called the Clinton admin "lap-dogs...returning to the vomit of liberalism; ...muck-dwelling bottom feeders, tending that sow that eats her young: the Welfare State".
He is an expert on economics/ just modest thats all.
PJ is the most traveled expert in all Media. PJ walks it talks it and most of all writes- IT...Conan should take some time and actually read a book. I like conan fine he's just over his head here.
@icebirdz Yeah, Conan appears slightly hostile towards O'Rourke; notice how O'brien rarely gives even a token laugh at O'Rourke's punch lines? Either O'Brien dislikes O'Rourke's politics or doesn't understand economics, or maybe he's afraid that his other guests will shun him for being nice to the conservative. Is that Janeane Garafolo on the couch? Conan O'Brien: big head, small brain.
Conan is kinda a dick in this interview. He starts off obsessing over O'rourke not having a degree in economics and so suggesting to his crowd he doesn't support the book. wow! This kind of thing is revealing of media norms and makes me admire republicans.
PJ O'Rourke is a fucking clown

Wow... 1998 and PJ predicts Trump should be on a TV show. Gotta admit he was right on that one.

You CAN make a country less poor from taking SOME money away from the rich and give it to the poor !
