I've gotten 1:58.40 on this with Yoshi without doing those slides, but how does a 1:58.12 equal a 1:38.24?

The PAL version of the game runs slower than the NTSC version, but the clocks run at the same speed. so PAL times are divided by a conversion rate of 1.2024.

You live in the US so you probably play the NTSC version, which means that your time doesn't get converted, so you're still far from the world record.

Hitting the wall saves time. It helps straighten out the kart more quickly. If you mean the 2nd hit, that was probably unintentional, but it was such a minor hit that it didn't really cost him time.

You have to wait a certain amount of time (about .3-.35 seconds) before you change the smoke from gray to yellow. If you instantly move the control stick back and forth as fast as you can, it'll take much longer to charge up the mini-turbo.

Divide by 1.2024 to convert from PAL to NTSC.

Oh OK then, does the NTSC version of the game have faster karts or something? Anyway this is awesome, the best I can get is 2:05 something (in PAL).

The NTSC operates at 60 frames a second, while the PAL operates at 50. But, the timer is still the same. So, everything moves at about 5/6 the speed in PAL, except for the timer, which is still going at normal speed, so the times are much slower.
