I just double checked, Gretchen never met Rose in the movie until the ending, why do they wave at each other? Sometime I wonder even Richard Kelly doesn't know what the movie is talking about. Even the Donnie Darko was well edited, the story would still more or less like the butterfly effect or other time travel sci-fi, the story is hard for many to understand is because Kelly's terrible editing. This shouldn't be a sci-fi, no sci-fi make so many rules of its own.

@021311 Gretchen was only giving a stranger's act of kindness. A sympathetic wave. Her son had just died. It didn't even matter if Gretchen knew Rose udring the time span of most of the movie because that was still in the tangent universe. At the end, it goes back to the primary universe where Donnie is killed for staying in his room since there would be no 'Frank the Rabbit' to call him out and save him.
