me and my friend had a bet that if he dropped me off his boat in the middle of the ocean that i couldnt swim to land with nothing but shorts do you think i could?
I am going on a cruise on that boat and i went on it before man WAS IT A FR*********** disaster people where flying everywhere and glass was breaking and a person fell down the stairs in the atrium
after watching these big waves, p e e r into a kaleidoscope so amazing, even Wikipedia calls it "spectacular". filmed in high res, this kaleidoscope NEVER repeats itself.
how do you know the exact measurments of the height of the waves, speed of boat(which is in knots not mph) and finally the wind speed? Rubbish swell for surfing
These numbers were given to us by the Captain of the ship over the public address system. And this might be news to you, but it is possible to calculate mph from knots.
True, when i where goin from Helsingborg to Helsingör there was way worse waves, and that was just a ferry, i where drunk are where showering when the waves washed up to the reling, it was uber fun. but then some joy killing crewmen came out, and he actually dragged me inside again. quite strange, but this was just a regular ferry. fun tough.
joexpark, yes we love RCCL, that's the only cruise line we go on. We achieved Platinum status in the Crown & Anchor society for frequent guests, oly 5 more before Diamond. :-)
depravedone" i have seen much bigger waves than this ! the video is very good but when you start breaking windows on d deck (thats when you know you have problems) we had 60ft swells and hurricane f12 in mid atlantic, lots of damage to the ship and broken windows flooded cabins ect... its not fun when you look out on prom deck and see waves wash over the whole length of it! added to the fact that you cant eat even if you wanted to due to it being so rough even the kitchens close !
shouldn't royal caribbean be taking its passengers through calmer waters?!? i mean, i personally wouldn't mind it, but some other passengers might really have a problem!
arequipa1, we went through a cold front that caused the winds and seas to really pick up. They closed all outside deck areas about 10 seconds after I shot this video. In fact on the original video I kept rolling while they came out and kicked us off the deck then sealed the doors off to keep people inside. It was really something.
yeah it was scary people were falling off their seats and everything it was scary shit sometimes it when you walked up and the wave was coming it was like walking up a hill
Geez, with waves that big, even with stabilizers on the ship (I assume you were on a ship!?) that would just about roll that ship over, wouldn't it???
hear the bloke say 20ft waves? have to be bigger than that. i have been in 12ft sea's just today fishing and these waves look huge compared to what i seen today.
judging by the sea state i reckon it was about a force 7 at most. you are probably getting the tail end weather of a storm that has passed ahead of the ship. the swell is 90 degrees to the ships course to keep the passengers happy i suspect and stop the sawdust being liberally scattered on the ensuing vomit party.
I remember when I went thrgough tropical Depression Gamma on a Costa boat and it was amazing easily fifty foot waves. The spray would hit the very top decks. They roped off the lower decks and me and some friends accidently ended up out there and got soaked to the bone in sixty degree sea water. Then later that night me, prolly five guys, and like six girls(even numbers) just whent out and stayed for about an hour, just chillin out ;), before we got busted and then they made us go back inside
i cant believe they allowed you guys to go up on deck in big winds and sea's like that. some of those guys looked mighty big poppin up out in the distance, before tehy dissapeared
The ship was RCCL Mariner of the Seas. WInd speed was 61 mph, plus the ship speed heading into the wind was 19 mph, for a total of 80 mph. This was announced on the loudspeaker by the Capt and also was verified on the weather and info channel in our stateroom.
mmm, its possible, they are standing in a little bit of a lee, hence why you can hear talking and not just the woosh of the wind, b/c its obviously blowing decently. Im assuming by "wind sheer" they mean relative wind, so 60mph true +20knot ships speed gets you there, and the beaufort scale calls for 30' sea waves w/ 63mph sustained true wind...
The highest winds I've personally been in were 122 mph - but that was a hurricane (I'm from South Louisiana). I've traveled right at 80,000 miles at sea on ship and went through one typhoon in the East China Sea and 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic. My personal experience tells me that if that boat was in 80 mph winds, NO ONE would be hanging out topsides, especially against the rail. BS seems to be flowing about.
The crew was bust clearing all outside decks when I shot this. I cut it off from the video, but as the video continues we are escorted off of the decks, and they "rope off" the outside doors to keep people from going out. It was pretty bad.
The waves looked much larger in person, and my estimate of their size was just an estimate. The waves were so big, in our room on the 7th deck, forward, we were literally tossed out of bed! Our bodies lifted up off the mattress when we'd hit a big wave. It was incredible.
According to the Beaufort Scale at 80 mph the waves should be 46+ feet tall. This is the description of what the waves would look like. Huge waves. Air filled with foam and spray. Sea completely white with driving spray. Visibility very greatly reduced. None of what I saw there. More likely it was 40 to 50 mph winds which would make it a force 8, which matches perfectly the waves your seeing. Either way it's not pleasant to be out there int hat stuff.
I think you are correct with the 20 foot size well at least at that wind speed. Many people forget that wave height is measured not from the bottom of the trough, but from sea level. I've always wondered why as well my boat has to climb out of that hole at some point, not from the sea level.. Still, good pictures and not fun to be out there in that stuff.
were you pictching? oops typo
