Well I Googled "do all saxophones have the same fingerings" ANNNND he's right. They all have the same fingerings BUT an e flat on the soprano will sound different on alto. Same fingerings different sound.Same with other instruments.
@NeonNeo123 no sir, your wrong. they all have the same fingerings and read the same way. for example say i was playing alto but my band director thought there should be someone on tenor i could swap over and play and read as if it were an alto. it is true that they are keyed differently but finger and read the exact same.
@NeonNeo123 No your wrong. All saxophones are played the same way. No you cant play a D on an alto and finger the same on a soprano and it be the same note. You would read each sax and finger each note the same, even though the notes would not match you would still do this because each sax has it own key, for example i could play a b flat on a tenor and match with a G on alto because they are keyed differently.
@guitarmaniac6491 if you played g on alto you would have to play a c on tenor/soprano to match it. if i understand what your saying Bb on tenor/soprano is not the same as playing a g on alto. a Bb on tenor/soprano is the same as playing f on an alto
This makes me want a Soprano Saxophone even more. I play clarinet, and the fingerings are similar, right? I really, really, REALLY want one. SO badly. You're SO lucky!
@MegaBandgeek22 The fingerings aren't similar at all. The difference between a sax and a clarinet is that a sax is cone shaped, so the bore get's bigger as it nears the end. A clarinet has a cylindrical bore, so it stays the same as it nears the end, like a cylinder. Thus, clarinet has different fingerings for each note than a saxophone. Not only that, but clarinet and sax have different techniques. Clarinet requires cold air and sax requires warm air. You even have to blow differently! Lol.
@MegaBandgeek22 Well, the fingerings are not completely same, but 12udolph's "not similar at all" comment is also far from the fact. I mean, the fingering of the clarinet in its third register, or the clarion range, almost completely matches with that of the saxophone in that range. And what's more, the sax has the same fingering over two octaves (only the octave key is what makes the difference), you can really excel in your early appoach in the sax!
@MegaBandgeek22 However, fingering in the lower notes and the altissimo range should be learned completely anew. Also, the embouchure is pretty different (for the sop sax, your both cheeks receive more pressure rather than your chin, as in the case of the clarinet) For my case, I have learned the clarinet for 1 year or so, and when I firstly met the sop sax I could sound it immediately, and after 5 trials could play the major C scale, and in 10 minutes i played several songs, although not good.
@MegaBandgeek22 I play the bass clarinet and I had to learn tenor sax for jazz band, I learned it in a week. I've only been playing it for about 2 months, but it is really easy. The fingerings are the same as our upper register (our high D is their D etc.) Also, the embrochure for a sax is looser than a clarinet. If you can play clarinet, you can play sax easy with a little practice.
@MegaBandgeek22 I also play the clarinet and i just started to play the alto sax. The transition was incredibly easy. The fingerings are VERY similar.
hey this is incredible ive listened to it so many times, i play soprano also and was wondering if there was anyway taht u can send me the sheet music for my band audition if not thats ok, great job
It sounds really nice:D:D I just began with playing soprano sax last week and I have lessons happily. But I hope your sax is fixed so you can play again
This song is the ballad for our marching band show! I play the alto and our show is called The Wicked Wiz of Oz. Look it up in November, because I will post it! (Blackhawk Marching Band 2011)
im gonna be starting out on soprano sax to get into jazz band play i have been playing it for 4 years now and im 13 i have also been playing bassoon for 2 years do you think its a good idea to play soprano saxophone for me?
ok i am in tons of trobble right now. I play tenor sax and i cant get below an F. and im talking about the one above middle C. i took it to a repair shop but they said there was nothing wrong with it that they could find. Its driving me insane because i cant play half the things i should be able to play by now. is it just my playing tecniques or is there something wrong with my sax that someone missed. P.S.it is probably 12 to 15 years old and belongs to my middle school.
@BbBassClarinetlover If there is something wrong with the horn it would either be a leak or a jammed key. leaks are easy for stores to find and jammed keys should be too.the octave or alternate octave valve would be jammed probably in this case if you cant get past a middle-high(?) F.you can try asking the store about either of these.or you may need to just play through it. not necesarily harder, but with more power like you're blowing through the whole horn.thatsmy idea what it is im no expert
i just bought my very first soprano saxophone today and have no idea how to play it... i envy your playing!! i love the back track and your playing!! Hope i'll be able to play like you very soon...!!
Think this is brilliant, what make of sax do you use out of interest? I'm thinking of starting and don't want to pay too much to get one so I'm just wondering as this sounds like it's very good quality? thanks <3
I've been a flute player for about 5 years now, and I want to learn the soprano sax. I want to major in music so I'm serious about learning. This made me believe the soprano sax is just an awesome instrument thanks to you solo. If anyone can give me a couple pointers on transitioning to soprano sax, I'd be glad to hear them
Ok this was great man. I'm an avid clarinet player and thinking about playing soprano sax because its in the same key. but im not sure weather to buy the straight neck and bell or curved. i see you're using straight here... but whats ur thought?
@sodiqin the fingerings of the upper register for the clarinet are 99% identical to all fingerings of a sax. However the fingerings dont change on a sax when you go up a register as it does on the clarinet
Loving it! How often do you practice? I've got one, started uploading quite recently wondering how to improve. Still getting used to it, been playing Alto for a lot longer! Anyway Great video and quality tone!
@tijuanamarisol666 its a wood wind. adoplh wanted to make the saxophone a hybrid between a brass and wood wind, he planned that by making it a brass instrument shape but have the simplicity of a wood wind. but its a wood wind because it uses a reed and mouth peice like the clarinet
@anglodaisy All saxophones have the same fingerings (makes it a lot easier to pick up a new one) and soprano is in the same key as a tenor, just one octive higher(:
Isn't the soprano sax same key as tenor, Bb? I would really like to play this when I master the tenor, and I think it's keyed the same as tenor and bass.
@anglodaisy Yah the Same as Tenor. Pretty sure it's the same as Trumpet and Trombone. Since the Trombone is in the same key as bass, then I'd say yes.
Try a Bari mouthpiece with a 68 or 72 tip. It might help you pop out some of those lower notes it sounded like you were having trouble with. Like at 0:57 and a few times before that.
@venusflytrap614 same here i also like the little perky improvisations he made to the song overall, this guy is is insanely talanted even wit the amplifications his fingering couldn't be any better

I play sax, and I eould know. It takes a true musician to grab someones attention when playing a well known piece. You have great clearity throughout this whole piece!!!
Though I adore nearly all of your music you post and etc. it takes a certain someone in my opinion to play soprano sax really well, and that, right now, isn't you. Though, I must say, I am rather impressed for the number and range of instruments you play and being this good on soprano.
i played sopran, tenor, and alto sax, then i tried clsrinet. its not much of a difference, you just have to practice and now im a natural at all of them. it will be easy. just work at it. I play # strength reeds on all of my saxes, but i find that 3 is too hard on clarinet so i play 2 1/2.
really i was thinking about trying the soprano sax . i play clarinet in my school band but we don't have a soprano sax (we have a small band but big sound) it's good to hear the transition is easy
Well I Googled "do all saxophones have the same fingerings" ANNNND he's right. They all have the same fingerings BUT an e flat on the soprano will sound different on alto. Same fingerings different sound.Same with other instruments.

would it be hard to learn how to play the alto or tenor sax if i already know how to play the clarinet and bass clarinet ?

i played sopran, tenor, and alto sax, then i tried clsrinet. its not much of a difference, you just have to practice and now im a natural at all of them. it will be easy. just work at it.

LOL, I'm jealous. My band sucks. We have a big band, but small sound ; )
