Beethoven was faithful, but NOT a christian. He believed in god, and thanked it (him, I guess) on regular occasions. But he did not believe in organised religion, and felt that it detracted from one's personal satisfaction of faith. So don't you christians go claiming him as your own because he seems to have written you a Mass. He wrote music for a purpose that is sublime, but it's not for you. It's for itself. He thanked a god, not your god.
4th part sanctus with its corresponding benedictus, sustained by one of those angelic heavenly infinite melodies that we encounter in the last quartetts, through this wonderful mass passes practically all the sacred music of the XIX century, long live ludwig van, we find an equilibrium and a refining in the instrumental writing and a correct position of the voices
a rusty, jaded, soiled, dusty, twisted, worn heart perhaps. but i've found that repeated listening to Beethoven will, just like repeated and gentle washing of a soiled cloth, help cleanse most hearts. dona nobis pacem. :)
people often ask me what i find mesmerizing about Beethoven, this is a classical case of the same. a piece of music written by a deist musician for a roman catholic mass is best orchestrated in modern times by a jew. this is the universality that is Beethoven....
Here is this wonderful music and some of you post such hateful notes. How sad must be your lives, how devoid of joy, how lacking in an appreciation of beauty. You have my pity.
...and the number of 'views' listed by youtube is wrong, since my views alone total 8,004...thank you Ludwig...thank you bugopolo, Leonard, and youtube....
the Monteverdi choir did this one and I have a copy, somehow its not like the other recording, more terse, faster, but this music is meant to be powerfully slow and wonderfully so. I am happy even if the benedictus isn't here, I love the Sanctus portions, even Mozart's Requiem has such wonderful Sanctus, even Bruckner and Rossini. Verdi even. I love the Holy sounds of the Sanctus, the terror and the tender love of it.
Yeah, the Benedictus was the best part, I always thought. I like the really explosive bits where you can imagine clouds clouds suddenly parting, the sun bursting through, and then God showing Himself.
Great! I love the part of the closup from hanna Schwarz where you can see her huge prominent larynx sticking out of her throat and jiggles up and down.
Doubt you realy want to. the LORD is the inspiration of this music. But I disagree with your comments on Catholicim. I as an Episcopalian consider my self a catholic. Just not a Roman Catholic.
We who cannot discern motives must not judge. How well do u know Bernstein? And what is the depth of Catholicism but murder and theological dogmatism which leads them to persecute religious minorities?Wat is "its depth" but the venomous heart of Satan to trample the holy Sabbath day of YHWH?What is its depth but the dunghill of Roman decretals,-product of human nonsense and human conceit?
He was bi-sexual. Who cares about his sexual or religious preference. He was a great conductor, composer, musician, ect...One of the greatest of all time! What is your point? Why does that matter? So @#@$%^&&*% what!
This sort of things only matter to those who are permanently hidding things about them. Don't pay atention to such comments, enjoy this music, this glorious music.
deefromott, I usually put the you tube users name when I reply but here I did not and I can not recall who I was commenting to but they must have said something stupid. This is Beethoven and Bernstein at it's best!!! Peace.
Only one word: SUBLIME! And all the listeners should just do that listen this absolutely divine music!

'Venturi' appears to mean "breeze, or soft wind." Hope that helps!

"Venturus, ventura, venturum" means: he/she/it who/wich has to come.

In my score, the fast part starting from 3:09 should be sung by the soloists, not the choir...
silvr94 2 years ago 2
@silvr94 They did it to save money-- the soloists get paid by the note.

Bernstein's interest in Catholicism is evident in the
sensitivity of this recording. His wife was Catholic and he shows a respect for its depth.

@desideriius The holy Sabbath day became Sunday when The Word Incarnate defeated death by His glorious resurrection. The NEW covenant trumps the OLD.
I won't even get into the old protestant canard about the "Evil" Catholic Church. It is beneath you to spout that garbage.
