  • chappysmom87: Thank you for making this video, I, like a lot of other people here, learned to feed through the fence, and not over. I'm always brushing my horses out in the field, and sometimes while I'm grooming them, they try to return the favour, and start pulling at my clothes, or taking nips at me. I don't take offence or anything to it, but what would be a good way to tell them that I don't need them to groom me back? So far, I've just been gently pushing their heads away.

  • It's beautiful how you can play with your horse that way!! x

  • Love this, especially the part where you jump up and down waving the blue thing like crazy. That's exactly what I would do with my horse, hahaha!

  • LOVED this one!

  • @barrelracing771 Glad you liked the video : )

  • @chappysmom87 It was great!I am so sorry for the rude comment!I learned something off this!

  • @barrelracing771 Never be sorry for an honest answer..its only rude if its intention is to be hurtful : ) ...and I'm sure that was not your intent...I could see you thinking that at first I'm 51--almost 52 years old, not 21 LOL dressed in frumpy barn clothes... Have a good day...glad you watched the video...

  • @chappysmom87 It was a great video, i learned to feed through the fence! Not over!

  • @chappysmom87 And by the way, CUTE horse!

  • i liked

  • I dislike

  • @bobbob306 It would be quite helpful to know what you dislike about it--content, video quality etc? Have a nice day.

  • @chappysmom87 I didn't have a nice day :( I just dislike. sorry

  • Wow this has really opened my eyes to why horses bite. My horse has the issue that eh will constantly nip at you. Before we bought him he was at a yard where he was next to a muck heap which everyone on the yard would walk very close past his stable. i assume this is where his biting habits started. Can you recommend how i can stop him being so aggressive. thanks

  • @lushlydz Hi, if you have a video of what the horse is doing it would be very helpful. Most of my videos are on topics related to biting, aggression and boundary issues--maybe look through them and see if something helps? You're issue seems to be when the horse is first approached? I can put one together on that if you think it might help---might take a couple weeks--its cold here and been very windy lately.

  • Cause my horse has a little bit of aggressiveness and will tend to bite me. It bit me like 5 times. And plus,I don't even know when he's gonna bite so,yeah. And how do we know how the horse is feeling?

  • @ShermaineNeo I'm working on it...is there a certain situation where the horse bites? Like are you leading it, approaching it, standing in front of it, feeding it, worming it, tacking it up?--is it invading your space, facing off with you etc first? Can you list a couple of the times it bit and what was going on--if you can, I can try to address it more specifically...should have it done sometime this week if the weather holds...getting c-o-l-d out here! Even better if you can post a video...

  • @ShermaineNeo Hi I did the video on warning signs--hope it helps : ) If you have a specific situation where its biting--I can try to do another more specific to a certain type of situation. The video I just posted called "when horses bite: some warning signs"

  • sure--are you dealing with a horse that bites or have a specific horse and type of situation in mind or are you looking for a generalization of the different signs of aggression leading to biting? Like an incase I run into this kind of horse or are you currently dealing with one? If you have a horse and situation in mind and share it, I can try and target that specifically as well...

  • Can you cover up a topic about how can you tell what the horse is feeling like angry and how to know when a horse is gonna bite. Thanks so much! :)

  • Soooo glad you found the videos helpful. Many of my videos are on this or related topics...if you have a topic you're interested in please let me know : ) Thanx for your encouragement...enjoy those horses! : )

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! YOU TAUGHT ME TO BE CLOSER TO HORSES NOW!! Sorry I'm using caps cuz I'm so happy! I was actually scared of horses but when I watched your video, I opened up my senses and now I know how to be with horses.thanks so much!

  • thanx : ) he is a real gem : )

  • this horse is awesome!:)

  • freekles 1245 asked a question--showed up in my email, but as I came here to answer, I see its been removed? No, he startled me because I wasn't paying attention and I had my fingers too curled--I felt his teeth and he felt my fingers and I think it startled both of us : ) Thanx for watching and thanx for your questions : )

  • 3rd part of answer: Set up a very tight behavior loop like this with baby steps that don't allow for the unwanted behavior and then extend the wanted behavior over longer lengths of time. Most of my videos on youtube are on this topic or related topics like boundaries, pushiness, aggression etc. Give me details of a situation and I can give you a tight behavior sequence to try : ) Most babies bite because they they're acting like the person is a horse--show them how you want them to behave.

  • @chappysmom87 Thanks for you're help! I will try this and see what happends in the end.=)

  • 2nd part of response: : ) I then asked it to lift its head and before it could think about acting up I again said good boy and again redirected it to the lawn--after doing this 4 or 5 times, I extended the length of time that I had him wait and started having him step forward a few steps before I redirected it to eat grass. I never had to correct the pony and it learned to lead beside me and wait for me to tell it when it could eat grass. cont....to 3

  • 1st part of response: : ) I would create a situation where the horse is rewarded for the wanted behavior. Like yesterday I was working with a pony that would act up when being led around its yard. So when I left the gate with it, I immediately said good boy, pointed to the grass and said go ahead and eat...gave it permission before it fussed. cont....

  • Finaly.Someone who understands that spending time with you're horse isn't just riding it.I do not own a horse but I do lease, and I play with her everytime I come to ride her.And I play with the other five horses before I leave.People say its boring but I honestly think its funner then riding the horse.=) But what do you do when a young horse bites?

  • @BlackDemonicWolf thanx for you positive feedback. I tried to answer your question-- its in three separate posts because they don't allow for much writing here...feel free to email me if the answer isn't indepth enough or not clear etc. Chappysmom87@yahoo.com. Thanx for watching and for playing with your horse!

  • good ideas for preventing situations in which punishment would be necessary. I really like your videos! I wish more people understood this "not doing TO a horse, doing WITH a horse..." I am amazed at how many do not get it.

  • I agree. The only time I condone hitting a horse is if the horse has done a very aggressive act and it about to do it again and there is no other alternative to stop it...this would include a person being too flustered to think of another alternative method...this to me is self defense. However, if this person continually finds themself in this situation with the same or other horses they're training method needs to change to avoid this happening over and over...its probably too aggressive.

  • people who punch their ponies should have them taken away

  • Thanks for sharing what you know. You have a beautiful horse.

  • Glad it helps! Thanx for the encouragement! My Gramps came to the U.S. already knowing how to train horses and brought some very constructive approaches w/him. I decided to post to maybe keep his way of training going...I don't like or agree with the cowboy approach to training. About ponies: I remember he used to chuckle/joke and say a pony is a more cantankerous character (than a horse) because its a really horse stuffed into a too small suit LOL : )

  • A great help to a first-time pony owner, thank you!

  • Love it!!! I'm a beginner and would like to learn how to work WITH horses just like you.. It's ashame but the only instructors I've come across use the fear /hitting approach.. Please post more vids!

  • AWESOME video ! Very helpful .... I will be subscribing and watching for new videos. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos!!!
